Be it known that I, EDWARD B. Nowosrnn- SKI. a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Two-Spark Magneto, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accom-' panying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
' This invention relates to an electric genera-tor of the magneto type and is particularly adapted for use in connection with supplying ignition current to an internal combustion engine. For certain classes of 1nternal combustion engines, such as those used in airplanes, it is highly essential, for obvious reasons, to provide double ignition not only for the added degree of safety, but for the reason that two sparks per cylinder will produce additional power from the engine. In the past. it has been the practise to use two independent magnetos, or, separate 1gn1- tion units, but this has the objection of increasing the cost of the complete engine as two drives, one for each source of ignition, mustbe provided as well as the objectionable weight of two separate units.
It is therefore, the principal object of my invention to provide an ignition generator which will deliver two sparks either substantially simultaneously, or, at a spaced interval and which generator will be in effect a double machine, although constructed as a single unit.
A further object of my invention is to provide a two spark machine in which one of the sparks may be adjustable with respect to the other for purposes which will be hereinafter set forth.
Another object of my invention is to provide a two spark magneto in which the parts requiring the most attention are so placed that they are readily accessible.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a two spark magneto of a compact design having a minimum number of parts thereby keeping the weight and cost to a minimum.
These and other objects will be apparent to one skilled in this particular art after a study of the specification taken in connection with the annexed drawings in which- Figural is a longitudinal sectional view through the generator.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the complete machine on a reduced scale.
Figure 3 is a view of the left hand end of Fig. 2, but with certain of the parts broken away to show part of the interior construction, while Figure 4 is a view on the same scale as Fig. 1 of the right hand end of Fig. 2 with one of the condenser covers and part of the breaker cover removed.
Referring now to the details wherein like numbers refer to corresponding parts in the various views, the magneto is made up of a frame-work composed essentially of a central structure 1 and a pair of end plates 2 and 3. The plates 2 and 3 carry bearings 4 and 5 for supporting the rotor structure 6, having a drive shaft 7 at one end and at least one cam 8 at the other end. The central structure carries on one side a pair of coil core pole pieces 9 and 10, and diametrically opposite a second pair 11 and 12. Bridging the pole pieces 9 and 10 is a coil core structure 13 on which is carried a coil 14 composed of the usual primary and secondary windings as commonly used in the construction of a 'high tension magneto. Bridging the pole pieces 11 and 12 is a second core structure 15 carrying a coil 16. The coils 14 and 16, as well as the cores 13 and 15 are similarin construction. The rotor 6 carries a plurality of inductors 17, similar to the inductor shown in my Patent 1,477 843 issued December 18, 1923.
It is also to be noted that thearrangement of pole pieces 9 to 12 inclusive, as
well as the coils 14 and 16 are arranged similarly as in said patent;' likewise, the central structure 1 is somewhat similar in design to that shown in said patent, except, in the present case the magnet pole shoes 18 and 19 are constructed so as to have double shoulders on either side as will be seen from Fig. 3 whichshows one of the magnets 20 fittlng against one set of said shoulders. The magnets on the opposite side fit against similar shoulders oppositely disposed on the magnet pole shoes 18 and 19.
The action of the magneto, so far as the distribution or shifting of the magnetic flux throu h the coil structures 14 and 16 is concerne is the same as that described in my patent previously referred to and hence, need not be further described herein, although, it may be mentioned that in the present case I prefer to make the heads 21 of the coils of good insulating material.
The drawings show a double set of magnets oppositely disposed, but it is to be understood that one wide ma net may take the place of the two on each si e of the magneto. The magnets are held in position by covers 22 and locking means 23 s own in Fig. 2.
The driving end plate 2 is constructed with a dowel 24 for tting snugly within a circular opening within the engine. The plate 2 is provided with a parr of flanges 25 which have oblong-holes 26 therein for the purpose of receiving studs or bolts for clamping the magneto to the engine. The oblong holes 26 thus provlding means for turning the magneto around the dowel 24 for tim1n purposes. It is thus seen that the method 0 mounting this magneto 1s different from the ordinary mounting which usually comprises two holes in the base of the magneto, or, a dowel pin in the base and a strap fastening overthe top of themachine. a I
The breaker end plate 3 is constructed with a central circular portion within which is fitted a circuit breaker ring 27 which has a flange 28 fitting over the outer surface of the plate 3. The breaker ring 27 has a lever arm 29 for advancing and retarding the ring within which, and carried-on the bottom portion thereof, is a pair of plate members 30 and 31. The plate members 30 and 31 have their central portions for1ned outwardlyasindicated by 32 and 33 of Fig. 1, thereby forming a circular pocket for the cam 8. The bottom of the pocket in which the cam 8 operates. is closed by a cover 34 which has an annular shoulder 35 fitting within the wall of the pocket also acting as an inner guide and support for the members 30 and 31. The portions 32 and 33 have arms 36 and 37 extending in opposite directions as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 and these arms, together with the flat portion of the plate members 30 and 31 support pivot pins 38 and 39 on which are bushings 40 that support the breaker arms 41 and 42. Each of the pivot pins 38 and 39 have a longitudinal bore 43 and a cross borev 44 so that lubricant may be supplied to the bearing pivots-it being understood that this magneto is particularly adapted to be mounted screws 51, may be adjustable a certain numtimed definitely from the other spark as it has been found that for best results the spark over the exhaust valves should be timed earlier than the spark over or in the vicinity of the intake valves. It is to be understood that the plate member 31 may be provided with oblong slots if necessary. The plate 34 is also provided with an oblong slot so as to allow the member 30 to be moved as above described. The plate 34 is provided with a projectin part 52 to which is attached, by means of ent over lugs 53,. an oil chamber, or pocket whiclris preferably formed in one piece with the lugs 53 projecting so as to pass through the plate 34 and be bent over as indicated in Fig. 4. It may also be pointed out that the annu lar shoulder 35.0f the plate 34 may extend much further inwardly than shown in Fig. 1 in order to close any opening 57 that there may be between the plate members 30 and 31 where they form the cam pocket thereby aiding in preventing any oil from getting on the breaker points 45 to 48 inclusive. The object of these small details which have been described is to insure satisfactory operation of the circuit breakers.
On opposite sides of the central portion of the end plate 3 is a pair of chambers 58, and 59 that are rectangular in shape and within these chambers is positioned condensers 60 and 61 that are associated with the'adjacent circuit breakers and coils in the usual manner. Each of the chambers 58 and 59 is which are he (1 in position by screws fitting in holes 64. The cover 62 covers a stud 65 and the cover 63 covers a stud 66 which are constructed to engage the end of a spring member 67 carried or attached to the breaker cover 68 in any satisfactory manner as by a rivet 69. From this construction it is seen that the spring 67 may be readily snapped from its position under the stud 65 and 66 and the circuit breaker cover 68 removed for the purpose of inspection 'and work on the circuit breakers.
At one end of the plate 3 is carried an insulator 69 while an insulator 70 is carried at the opposite end of the plate 3. The insulators 69 and 70 are fastened to the plate 3 in any satisfactory manner as by studs 71. A high tension lead from the coil 14 is brought out to a terminal in the insulator 69 to which a conductor 72 is adapted to be rovided with covers 62 and 63' fastened as b an insulator thumb nut 73, while the con uctor 74 is fastened by a similar thumb nut 75 to convey current from the coil 16 to its distributor.
The machine as herein disclosed is not provided with any distributor as these are preferably mounted on another portion of the engine, although, of course, the magneto may be constructed with distributor.
While I have shown one cam 8 operating on both breaker arms llandj -12 that are shown set in the same plane, yet, it is obvious that the breaker arms may be set in different planes and two cams utilized.
Each of the primary windings of the coils 14 and 16 is provided with the usual terminal posts 76 and 77 for grounding the primary in order to control the operation of the magneto. Each of the coils 14 and 16 is provided with a safety gap 83 adapted to cooperate with a ground member 82 carried on the plate 2.
It may be also noted that the breaker ring 27 is provided with a pair of slots 78 within which project screws 79. These are for the purpose of limiting the amount of movement ofthe ring 27. The rin is also provided with arcuate slots 80 an 81 for the conductors going to the circuit breakers. The pivot pins 38 and 39 are each provided with a hole to receive a locking or cotter p In order to insure that the magneto is water and dust proof 1 provide a strip of insulation 84 around the entire inner surface of the magnets 20, it being understood of course, that felt or any suitable material is used underneath the covers 22 particularly at the junction of the plates 2 and 3.
From what has been said it will be seen that all the parts which might be expected to wear out or give trouble are provided in duplicate and each independent of the other so that should one circuit breaker, one condenser, or one coil go bad, the other set still function thereby providing two sources of ignition.
It is obvious that many changes may be -made in the detailed arrangement of the parts, and I therefore do not wish to be unduly limited in the interpretation of the annexed claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A two spark magneto comprising; two independent coils with associated cores and pole pieces,'two independent sources of magnetic flux, a single rotor structure carrying flux directing members, operable to direct magnet flux simultaneously through said coil cores and a separate circuit breaker operated by said rotor structure for controlling each coil.
2. A two sparkmagneto comprising; two
independent coils with associated cores and pole pieces, two independent sources of magnetic flux having common pole shoes, a single rotor structure carrying flux directing members cooperating with said core pole pieces and said common pole shoes to direct magnetic flux simultaneously through said coil cores and separate circuit breakers for controlling each coil.
3. A two spark magneto comprising; 'two independent coil units carried by a framework on opposite sides thereof, a pair of oppositely disposed pole shoes carried by the frame-work intermediate aid coil units, a permanent magnet for each of said coil units and enclosing the same and fitting on said shoes, a rotor structure operatively mounted between said pole shoes and having inductors for directing the flux from the pole shoes through said coil units, and a separate circuit breaker for controlling each coil. v
4. A two spark magneto comprising; two independent coil units carried by a framework on opposite sides thereof, a pair of double shouldered pole shoes oppositely disposed with respect to each other and carried by the frame-work equidistant from each of said coil units, a permanent-magnet for each coil unit having its ends fitting on said shoulders, a rotary structure disposed between said pole shoes and adapted to direct flux from said pole shoes simultaneously through said coil units and independent circuit breakers for each coil unit operated by said rotor structure.
5. A two spark magneto comprising; a frame-work composed essentially of a central structure and a pair of end plates, said central structure having a pair of centrally but oppositely arranged magnet pole shoes and two pair of oppositely arranged coil core pole pieces, a coil structure arranged on each pair of core pole pieces, independent magnets fitting over each of said coil structures and held in position on opposite sides of said magnet pole shoes, a rotor structure carried within said central structure and having inductors for directing the flux from said pole shoes to said core pole pieces and coil structures, and a circuit breaker operated by said rotor structure for controlling each of said coils.
6. A two spark magneto comprising; a frame-work composed essentially of a central structure and a pair of end plates, said central structure having a pair of centrally but oppositely arranged magnet pole shoes and two pair of oppositely arranged coil ture and having inductors for directing the flux from said pole shoes to said core pole pieces and coil structures, a circuit breaker and an associated condenser for controlling each of said coils carried by one of said end plates, :1 cover over each of the condensers and a separate cover over both circuit breakers.

A two spark magneto comprising; a frame-work composed essentially of a central structure and a pair of end plates, said central structure having a pair of centrall but oppositely arranged magnet pole shoes and two pair of opposi ely arranged J coil core pole pieces, a coil structure arranged on each pair of core pole pieces, independent magnets fitting over each of said coil structures and held in position on opposite sides of said magnet pole shoes, a rotor structure carried within said central structure and having inductors forvdirecting the flux from said pole shoes to said core pole pieces and coil structures, a pair of circuit breakers carried by one end plate and operated bythe rotor structure for in dependently controlling said coils, a cover fitting said end plate over the circuit breakers, said end plate having a pair of oppositely disposed compartments, a condenser mounted in each compartment and connected one to each circuit breaker and coil,
a cover for each compartment and a pair of oppositely disposed coil terminals carried by said end plate.
8-. A two spark magneto comprising; a frame-work composed essentially of a central structure and a pair of end plates, said central structure having a pair-of centrally but oppositely arranged magnet pole shoes and two pair of oppositely arranged coil core pole pieces, a coil structure arranged on each pair of core pole pieces, independent magnets fitting over each of said coil structures and held in position on opposite sides of said magnet pole shoes, a rotor structure carried within said central structure and having inductors for directing the flux from said pole shoes to said core pole pieces and coil structures, a circuit breaker and an associated condenser for controlling each of said coils carried by one of said end plates, a cover over each of thr condensers and a separate cover over both circuit breakers, said other end plate having a dowel and flanges for adjustably mounting the magneto.
9. A two spark magneto comprising; a frame-work composed essentially of acentral structure and a pair of end plates,
said central structure having a pair of cen-' trally but oppositely arranged magnet pole shoes and two pair of oppositely arranged coil core pole pieces, a coil structure arranged on'each pair of core pole pieces, independent magnets fitting over each of said coil structures and held in position on opposite sides of said magnet pole shoes, a rotor structure carried within said central structure and having inductors for directing the flux from said pole shoes to said core pole pieces and coil structures, and a circuit breaker operated by said rotor structure for controlling each of said coils, and means for mounting the magneto by one Of said end plates.
10. A two spark magneto comprising; a framework composed essentially of a central structure and a pair of end plates, said central structure having a pair of centrally but oppositely arranged magnet pole shoes and two pair of oppositely arranged coil core pole pieces, a coil structure arranged on each pair of core pole pieces, independent magnets fitting over each of said coil structures and held in position on opposite sides of said magnet pole shoes, a rotor structure carried within said central structure and having inductors for directing the flux from said pole shoes to said core polepieces and coil structures, one of said end plates having a central circular portion, a circuit breaker ring fitting within said circular portion and preferably adjustable therein, a pair of plate members supported by said ring and a circuit breaker carried by each of said plate members for controlling each of said coils, said circuit breakers being operated by said rotor structure.
11. A two spark magneto comprising; a frame-Work composed essentially of a central structure and a pair of end plates, said central structure having a pair of centrally but oppositely arranged magnet pole shoes and two pair of oppositely arranged coil core pole pieces, a coil structure arranged on each pair of core pole pieces, independent magnets fitt'n over each of said coil structures and held sides of said magnet pole shoes, a rotor structure carried within said central structure and having inductors for directing the flux from said pole shoes to said core pole pieces and coil structures, one of said end plates having a central circular portion, and a chamber adjacent opposite sides of said circular portion, a condenser mounted in each chamber and associated with said respective coils, a circuit breaker ring fitting within said circular portion and preferably adjustable therein, a pair of plate members supported by said ring, a circuit breaker carried by each of said plate members for controlling each of said coils, said circuit breakers being operated by said rotor structure, and a coil terminal on each end of said end plate.
12. A two spark magneto comprising; a. frame-work composed essentially of a central structure and a pair of end plates,
said central structure having a pair of centrally but oppositely arranged magnet pole shoes and two pair of oppositely arranged coil core pole pieces, a coil structure arranged on each pair of core pole pieces, independent magnets fitting over each of said coil structures and held in position on opposite sides of said magnet pole shoes, a rotor structure carried Within said central structure and having inductors for directing the flux from said pole shoes to said core pole pieces and coil structures, one of said end plates having a central circular portion, a circuit breaker ring fitting within said circular portion and preferably adjustable therein, a pair of plate members supported by said ring, at least one of said plate members being adjustable on the breaker ring, a circuit breaker for each coil carried by each of said plate members and means on the rotor for operating said circuit breakers.
13. A two spark magneto comprising; a frame-work composed essentially of a central structure and a pair of end plates, said ce1itral structure having a pair of centrally but oppositely arranged magnet pole shoes and two pair of oppositely arranged coil core pole pieces, a coil structure arranged on each pair of core pole pieces, independent magnets fitting over each of said coil structures and held in position on opposite sides of said magnet pole shoes, a rotor structure carried within said central structure and having inductors for directing the flux from said pole shoes to said core pole pieces and coil structures, one of said end plates having a central circular portion, a circuit breaker ring fitting within said circular portion and preferably adjustable therein, a pair of plate members supported by said ring, at least one of said plate members being adjustable on the breaker ring, and having outwardly projecting parts shaped to form the wall of a cam pocket; arms extending from said projecting parts of each plate member, a plate lying over said projecting parts and havin a shoulder fitting within said pocket an forming the end thereof, a circuit breaker arm pivoted between said arm and the body part of each plate member and a cam on the rotor positioned in said pocket for operating said breaker arms.

A two spark magneto comprising; a frame-work com osed essentially of a cen tral structure and a pair of end plates, said central structure havin a pair of centrally but oppositely arrange magnet pole shoes and two pair of oppositely arranged coil core pole pieces, a col structure arranged on each pair of core pole pieces, independent magnets fitting over each of said coil structures and held in position on opposite sides of said magnet pole shoes, a rotor structure carried Within said central structure and having inductors for directing thefiux from said pole shoes to said core pole pieces and coil structures, one of said end plates having a central circular portion, a circuit breaker ring fitting within said circular portion and preferably adjustable therein, a pair of plate members supported by said ring, at least one of said plate members being adjustable on the breaker ring and having outwardly projecting parts shaped to form the wall of a cam pocket, arms extending from said projecting parts of each plate member, a closure plate lying over said projecting parts and having shoulders fitting within said pocket and forming a support and end thereof, a circuit breaker arm pivoted between said arm and the body part of each plate member, a cam on the rotor positioned in said pocket for operating said breaker arms, an oil reservoir by said closure plate and having a wick extending into contact with said cam, condenser chambers on opposite sides of said circular portion and a high tension terminal adjacent each condenser chamber.

A two spark magneto comprising; two independent coils with associated cores and pole pieces, two independent sources of magnetic flux, a single rotor structure carrying flux directing member operable to direct magnetic flux simultaneously through said coil cores, a driving end plate for mounting the magneto, a cam end plate having; a central circular portion carrying therein a pair of circuit breakers, one for each coil, a con- 100 denser chamber carrying a condenser therein adjacent opposite sides of said circular portion, a high tension terminal on opposite ends of said end plate adjacent the condenser chambers and individual covers for 105 each of said chambers and said central portion.
