COMBINATION MOTOR-VEHICLE LAMP.
Application filed May 27, 1925.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I. JOHN F. FARMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis. in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Combination Motor-Vehicle Lamp, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of ref erence marked thereon.
This invention relates to the headlight type of lamp that is adapted to he used on various classes of motor-vehicles. the invention having reference more particularly to an electric lamp in which a plurality of reflectors are combined there being an electric lamp or bulb in each reflector.
An object of the invention is to provide simple and inexpensive motor-vehicle lamps that shall be so constructed as to be adapted to be variously supported and used in various ways for lighting the road ahead of motor-vehicles without projecting light beams towards drivers approaching from the opposite direction.
Another object is to provide an improved electric lamp which shall be of such construction as to permit the use of a large reflector for commonly lighting the road broadly and other reflectors for projecting light beams towards one or both sides of the road.
A further object is to provide an improved headlight lamp whichshall be of such construction as to unobtrusively and conveniently combine an adjustable reflector and lamp whereby to project light rays at various angles relatively to those of the main light, and without necessitating costly or troublesome structure, which lamp shall be of such construction as to be adapted to be used either in one position or in a relatively inverted position, as may be desired.
With the above-mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in an electrical lamp having a plurality of reflectors differing'in size and contour. the smaller being combined in the casing of the other and preferably being adjustable, each reflector being provided with an electrical lamp; the invention consisting also in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter particularly de scribed and further distinctly claimed.

Similar reference characters in the different figures of the drawings indicate corresponding elements or features of construc tion herein referred to in detail.
For the purposes of illustration and description the drawings show well known parts and the usual arrangement thereof pertaining to a motor-vehicle. particularly the forward wheels 1 and 2. the forward axle 3 engine radiator 4L. and frame members 5 and 6. the headlights usually being mounted on the frame members or other body portions in proximity to the radiator.
The combination. lamp comprises a cylindrical casing shell 7 or a similar shell 7 and a rear end part 8 which may be permancntlv connected inexpensively to the shell. It is designed that the lamp be inirrtible so that the direction of side light rays may be changed without involving complicated construction, and therefore the shell 7 has bolt holes 9 in one portion and similar holes 9 in the diametrically opposite portion of the wall thereof. to receive bolts 10 whereby a saddle 11 is removably secured to the shell, the saddle being provided with a suitable standard 12 adapted for wholly supporting one lamp casing, and a standard 12 adapted for likewise supporting the companion lamp casing. A reflector 13 is arranged in the normally forward portion of the shell 7 and it has a flange 14: seated against the adjacent end of the shell. A suitable lens 15 or a lens 15 is arranged against the flange and is held in place by means of a suitable frame or retaining ring 16 which adjusted.
,the stem and also to the outer side of the is suitably connected to the shell, so as to be removable to permit removal of the reflector in a convenient manner to gain access to the interior of the casing. The reflector is provided centrally with an electrical lamp socket 17 which usually carries an electric light burner or bulb 18, an electric circuit 19 being suitably connected with the socket and extending out through the end part 8 of the casing.
For the purposes of the invention the shell 7 is provided on one side thereof with a side light casing part 20 or a similar part 20 that is preferably circular and is set at a suitable oblique angle relatively to the shell 7 and may be of any desired diameter which preferably is less than that of the shell, and it preferably has a front window glass 21 connected thereto. A suitable reflector 22, preferably parabolic is supported preferably by means of the shell 7 and is arranged partially in the shell and partially in the side casing part 20 so as to reflect light from one side of the lamp casing shell in such direction and angle as may be desired. Preferably the reflector 22 is adjustably supported to permit it to be turned in any direction and is provided with an adjusting post which may be variously constructed but preferably comprises a base part 23 having a foot 24 which is pennanently secured to th inner side of the shell 7 adjacent to the casing part 20, an adjustable stem 25 having a ball 26 rigidly con nected to one end thereof and supported upon the end of the part 23, and a nut 27 screwed onto the base part and having a semi-globular cap portion 28 embracing the ball to secure it to the base part, the cap portion having a flared aperture 29 in which the stem 25 may freely more when being A head plate 30 is secured to reflector The reflector 22 has a central lamp socket 31 suitably supported which carries a suitable lamp bulb 32, an electric circuit 33 being connected with the socket and extending out through the rear end 8 of the casing, the end preferably being provided with an insulator 34 through which the circuits l9 and 33 extend, the circuit 33 having a slack portion within the casing to permit adjustment of the lamp bulb and the reflector 22.
This simple structure lends itself to a variety of changes and adjustments which may be desired under different conditions by the user, and in connection with the various electrical switching systems which may permit each electric light to be switched on or off or dimmed, independently or paired as may be preferred. The user may readily adjust the side lights so as to project light rays forward without blinding an opposing driver, or towards one side of the road as indicated by broken lines in Figs. 1 and 2 and different angles as may be desired. Either lamp may be readily inverted relatively to the positions shown, especially so that the rays may cross ahead of the vehicle.
In practical use, the main reflectors 13 afford ample light on the road, and the side lights may be available if desired. On approaching an opposing vehicle the main lights may be either dimmed or extinguished, according to previous design of the required switching system, and the opposing driver will not be within the range of the focus of the side lights which will afford sufficient light ahead to enable the vehicle carrying the improved lamps to safely proceed.
lVhat is claimed as new is:
1.. A combination motor-vehicle lamp including a main casing having a relatively angular frame on one side thereof, a main reflector supported in the forward portion of the main casing, and a parabolic side reflector arranged partially in the main casing and partially in the angular frame and being shiftable in the frame angularly thereto and bodily supported in place.
2. A combination motor-vehicle lamp including a main casing having a relatively angular frame on one side thereof, the inner side of the main casing having an adjusting post secured thereto adjacent to the angular frame, a main reflector supported in the forward portion of the main casing, and a side reflector secured to the adjusting post, and extending into the angular frame to be adjustable relatively to the frame.
3. A combination motor-vehicle lamp comprising a casing including a shell and a side frame angularly fixed. on one side of the shell, and also an end part connected to the rear end of the shell. a main reflector supported by theforward end of the shell. a
parabolic side reflector arranged partially and aside reflectorsecured intermediatelv of its opposite ends to said stem and extending into said side. part.
