DETACHABLE SHOE HEEL.

Be it known that I, CLAYTON Honnnrr, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Detachable Shoe Heel, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a detachable shoe heel, and has for its primary object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character which may be readily cletached for replacement when worn out or damaged or for interchanging when one side has worn down thereby increasing the life of the heels.

Such a structure is particularly adapted for use in connection with rubber or other composition heels but may also be used in connection with leather heels as will be obvious from the description below[ Another object of my invention is to provide aholder for the detachable heel adapted to be permanently fastened to the shoe to receive the detachable heel by sliding the latter into the holder from the forward end thereof.

A further object of the invention is to provide a key of unique construction for holding the detachable heel in place against endwise movement whereby said heel is held against accidental displacement.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a sectional detachable heel whereby only one section may be replaced when worn and such a construction is particularly useful for persons who wear down the heel and one side edge more quickly than the entire surface thereof.

With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application in which V Fig. 1, is a fragmentary perspective View of a shoe illustrating an embodiment of my invention.

In carrying out my invention as herein embodied, 16 represents a shoe provided with the usual heel lift or lifts 17 although under some conditions these are not essen tial. To the bottom of the shoe in the re v gion of the heel or to the heel lift 17 is secured the holder 18 comprising,'when in use, a top, wall 19, a side wall 20, and an inwardly projecting flange 21 thereby providing a channel 22. The side wall and flange extend around both sides and the back of the holder, or in other words, ex-

tend around all but the front end. This holder is secured to the shoe by suitable attaching means such as nails 23 or their.

In lieu of the holder above describedone of similar construction may be used which is shown in Figs. 11 and 12 designated by the numeral 18'. This holder includes the top wall 19', side walls 20, flange 21 and aperture 24, as well as attaching elements 23' in the form of prongs produced by practically cutting sections from the top wall and bending the same outward.

The detachable heel 26 is of such size as to fit within the holder with a portion projecting below the flange 21 and is provided with a groove 27 runnin around both sidesand the rear end for registration with the flange 21 of the holder. This detachable heel has a key slot 28 projecting downward from its inner face and when the heel is in place this key slot registers with the aperture 24: in the holder and the hole 25 in the shoe so that a key 29 inserted from the inside of the shoe will prevent forward endwise displacement of the heel.

As here shown the key 29 preferably. comprises a carrier 30 in the form of a shoe heel pad such as is generally fixed within a shoe but it is to be understood that in this case the carrier is preferably unattached so that it may be removed when desired and said carrier has a pocket formed in one face thereof for the reception of the tongue 32 of the key, the latter also including a tang 33 projecting from the tongue preferably at an angle greater than a right angle shownin Fig. 8.

In practice, assuming that the heel is in place, it is only necessary to remove the key at which time the detachable heel may be slid forward to remove it from the holder after which it may be replaced by another and a key again inserted 'so that its tang projects through the hole 25, aperture 24 into the key opening 28 and while the shoe provided with such a heel is being worn there is no chance of displacement of the heel as the wearcrs foot is resting upon thekey to prevent its accidental res moval. I

and includes a rim section 34 and a key section 35 the two coacting to form a complete heel having the groove 27 running around both sides and the rear end as described in connection with the integral heel and the key section is 'p'rovidedwith the key slot 28. a f V I By making the heel in two parts a person who wears down one side thereof more quickly than the other or one side and the rear nay interchange the rim sections of the right and left shoes and when worn to such an extent that it becomes necessary to replace the same new rim sections may be purchased at a very small expense or approximately one-half the expense of an entire heel due to the small amount of material used.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a detachable shoe heel which may be readily and quickly re moved and replaced or the heels of the right and left shoes may be interchanged so as to more evenly distribute the wear thereon and either of these may be'put on by unskilled labor and removed, replaced or interchanged by the wearer at'anytime.

Of course I'do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departingfromithe spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a' shoe having an opening therethroiwh, a holder attached to the shoe and provided with an aperture registering with the opening through the shoe, said holderhaving an inwardly projecting flange, 'a detachable heel having a groove for registration with the flange and provided with a key opening for registration with the aperture in the holder, and a key to hold said heel in place, said key comprising a tongue and tang at angles to each other, anda carrier provided with a pocket in which the tongue is inserted.

2. A device of the character described comprising, the combination with a shoe having an opening therethrough, of a holder including an inwardly projecting flange and provided with an aperture registering with the'opening in the shoe, a sectional heel removably mounted in the holder and one of said sections having a key hole therein. and a key passing through the opening in the shoe, the aperture in the holder and into the hole in the heel section for holding the heel in place.
