-in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, l have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes, of which the following isa specification.

My invention relates to pipes such as are comonly used by tobacco smokers.

Y structed that the nicotine and moisture whichaccumulates in the neck.V of the pipe and inner end of the stem may be easily and effectually removed therefrom from time to'time, vso that the pipe is kept comparatively dry and clean of these objectionable elements so commonly found in pipes.

Another object in View is to obtain the end sought by simple and inexpensive means that can be easily'applied to a pipe of ordinary construction without changing the size,

shape, or exterior appearance of the pipe.

Other objects will appear in the subjoined description. I

The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the4 aecomlpanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevationpartly in section, showing a pipe constructed in accordan'ce with my invention.

The numeral 1 indicates the bowl of the pipe, 2 the neck; and 3, the internal recess of the neck,`into which recess the reduced end 4a of the stein 4 is received, the stem having a shoulder 5 designed to abut against' the end ofthe neck 2 of the pipe.

The stem is provided with the ordinary bore 6 which extends entirely vthrough vthe stem fromend to eiid. At its inner end the stem is further provided with another bore7 parallel with .the bore `6 and somewhat larger, which latter bore cuts into the periphery of thevbore 6 which is immediately object is to provide a pipe so con` above it, and extends into the end4 of .the-.:

The -metallic tube 8 is snugly but removably received into the bore 7 withthe inner end of said tube projecting inwardly from the end of the ipe stem into the recess 3 of the neck of t e pipe. The inner projecting end of the pipe 8 is provided on its up er side with openings 9.

Hence it will be seen that when air is drawn through the stem, from the pipe, in the usualinanner, all of said air enter/ing the tube together with the smoke accompanying it, must be drawn through said spiral portion of the Stem wiper; and the portion which passes direct4 from the recess 3 of the pipe into the bore of the stein has topass lengthwise through the sti-ai ht portion 10 of the wiper; and finally, a ter the end of the tube 8 is passed, all the smoke-laden airl that has entered through both openings, has to pass longit'udinally through the section 10" of the stem wiper. Thus it will be seen that thesmoke is most thoroughly filtered through the stem wiper before it passesinto the mouth of the smoker; and most of the nicotine and mois.-

;.ture formed in the pipe will be caught in tine and moisture, the stem is simply removed from the pipe, which exposes'the spiral end of the wiper; and the wiper is then pulled endwise, which moves thespiral portion over 'the exposed end portionA of the tube 8, and draws the straight portion of the wiper out of the opening 6 of the stem. 011e end of another wiper is then inserted in the opening 6, and the remainder of it wrapped around the projecting portion of the tube 8 as before. The stem is then inserted in its place in the neck ofthe pipe, and the pipe is again ready for use.

If desired the inner, end of the openin 6 may be oounterbored to receive the meta lic tube 8, in which case the end of the wiper 10 will be inserted in the open' g 7 instead of the main opening 6 of the tem.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is In a device of the character described, a pipe having a neck portion provided with a recess in the smoke passage; a stem adapted to bereceived into the outer'endof said recess,l said stem having a main longitudinal opening,vand at its inner end a parallel bore in communication with said opening; a tube adapted-to be received into said 'bore at the inner end of the stem, with a portion of the tube projecting beyond said end; and a stem wiper extendin into the inner end of the main opening oi: the stem and having a projecting portion Wrapped around the proj ect-J ing end of the tube, and also arranged to cover up the open end of the tube, said stem cleaner being of an absorptive'nature.
