R. F. @HELPS ADJUSTABLE CHART Filed Dec. 16 1924 /ll l0 f'agl. E
F595 zo 21 Patented Dec. 1, 1925.
UNITED STATI-:s
RSWELL F. PHELPS, OF EAST DEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
ADJUSTABLE CHART.
pplication filed December 1G, 1924.
To all whom t may con-cern.'
Be it known that I, RoswnLL F. Primes, a citizen of the United States of Anierica, and a resident of East Dedham, in the county of Norfolk, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and nsetul 1mprovements in Adjustable Charts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to charts used to indicate varying conditions at different periods of time, and has for its object the production of a device of this character in which the datum members are adjustable upon supporting members and may be varied at will While the members supporting said datum members may also be adjusted to vary the spaces bet-Ween the same.
These objects are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, one preferred form thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranger and organized and the invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described except as required by the scope of the appended claims.
Of the drawings Figure 1 represents an adjustable graphic chart embodying the principles of the present invention.
Figure 2 represents a vertical section of the same on line 2, 2, on Figure 1.
Figure 3 represents a horizontal section on line 3, 3 on Fig. 1.
Figure 4 represents an elevation of one of the supporting Wires with a ball at each end thereof, and
Figure 5 represents one of the datum members used on said Wires, this member being drawn to an enlarged scale.
Similar characters indicate like parts throughoutthe several figures of the drawings.
ln the drawing 10, 10 are two parallel horizontal bars having their ends pivotally connected by rivets 11 to the ends of vertical bars 12, '12 thus forming a rectangular frame.
One of the vertical bars 12 has mounted thereon a graduated scale 13 With suitable Serial No. 756,239.
indicating characters thereon while one of the horizontal bars 10 is likewise provided with a scale 1a having thereon graduations and other indicating characters.
As shown in the drawing the scale 141 has spaced graduations indicating different years and the scale 1?) has graduations indicating diiierent amounts, but these graduations and indicating characters may be different from those shown, differently graduated scales being used according to the information it is desired to display upon the chart.
Each bar 10 has a groove 15 formed in its inner face, the inner end of the groove being preferably cylindrical throughout its i entire length.
A. plurality of Wires 16 are employed, each Wire having on each end a` ball 17 adapted to be positioned in one of the grooves 15.
TWhen these ball ends 17 are positioned in the grooves 15 they may be moved endivise of said grooves to cause the Wires 16 to aline with the graduations on the scale 141.
When the vvires 16 are thus adjusted'they are in parallelism and the ball ends 17 lit accurately enough in the grooves 15 to re tain these Wires in adjusted position.
1n connection with the Wires 16 a number of datum members 19 are used, each such member consisting of a ball having a slot 20 extending to its cent-er, said slot 2O being adapted to receive one of the Wires 16.
Preferably the ball is made of material which will yield slightly and the slot 2O has a Width slightly less than the diameter of the wire 16 so that said ball may be snapped upon a Wire and retained in position thereon.
The members 19 may be moved along the Wires 16 into any desired position and When so adjusted will remain in the place in Which they are positioned.
Each member 19 is provided with a thread passage 21 through which is passed a thread 22 connected at one end to the member 19 on the left h'and Wire 16, the free end of said thread 22 being Wound around a button 23 to hold the thread 22 taut.
The bars 10 are provided at the end of the grooves 15 With entrance slots 2:4: extending from said grooves to the front face of said bars, these slots providing means whereby the ball ends 17 may be inserted into the grooves 15 and removed therefrom.
One of the vertical bars 13 is provided with a stop projection 25 which coact-s With the under n'all of the upper bar l0 when the bars are in rectangular position, the connecting rivets ll in the bars l0, l2 being tight enough to retain said bars 10, 1Q .in such position.
lVhcn the frame is not in use it may be collapsed, the bars l0, l2 being' moved about the rivets ll until the upper bar 10 comes into contact with and rests upon the lower bar 10. In this collapsed condition the frame will occupy but-very little space.
Vhile only one set of datum men'ibers i9 and one thread 22 is shown in the drawing, it is obvious that other threads may be used upon vthe same Wires 16 if desired.
Such a device may be used as a graphic chart and changed from day to day, or at stated periods, in order to furnish data as to changes vin conditions.
Usually such charts are drawn and consequently quite expensive, much labor beA ing entailed in drafting the same.
By the use of the chart herein shown and described all this Work is dispensed with and if there is no further use for the particular data illustrated by the position of the datum members 19 and thread 22, new scale 13, 14 may be substituted for those shown in the drawing andentirely diii'ereiit data maybe indicated by the chart.
lf a plurality of copies of `the chart are required, the device when properly adjusted may be photographed and photographic prints made therefrom.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention Will be Well understood Without further description.
Having thus described my invention, I Claim l. A chart provided With a plurality of 'taut parallel Wires; a taut thread extending transversely of said Wires.; and a datum member for each Wire having `a slot therein, the Walls of which are adapted to impinge upon said Wire and retain said datum member in adjusted position; and means for connecting' said thread to said datum member. i
2. A chart provided with a plurality of taut parallel Wires; a taut thread extending tratarse transversely of said wires; and a datum member for each wire .having a slot therein, the Walls of Which are adapted to impinge upon said Wire and retain said datum member in adjusted position, said datum members having passages perpcndiculzu' to said slots through Which said thread is adapted to be inserted.
3. A chart consisting of a rectangular frame, two parallel bars which are :provided with grooves in their inner faces, la plurality of wires having heads on opposite ends thereof positioned in said grooves and movable vendwise therein; a datum member on each Wire adjustable lengthwise thereof; and a thread connecting all of said datum vmembers.
4. A chart consisting ^of a rectangular frame, two vparallel bars which are provided With grooves in their inner faces; a plurality of Wires having heads on opposite ends thereof positioned in said grooves and movable rendWi-se therein; .a dat-um member on each Wire -adjustable lengthwise thereof, each member hav-ing' a slot therein to receive said Wire; and -a thread extending transversely Aof said vsupporting means and connecting all Aof said datum members.
5. A chart consisting of a rectangular f-rai'ne, two .parallel bars which are provided with grooves in their inner faces; a plurality of Wires having heads on opposite ends thereof 'positioned in said grooves and movable endwise therein; a datum member on each wire adjustable lengthwise thereof each member having a slot ytherein to `receive said Wire and la `thread passage therethrough perpendicular tosaid slot; and a `thread inserted through said passages and connecting all of said datum members.
G. A chart consisting vof .a frame.; .a plurality of parallel Wires 'thereon adjustable towards and 'from .each other; a detachable datum member adapted to be positioned on each Wire and adjusted lengthwise thereof; and a taut thread extending transversely of said Wires and connecting' all of said datum members.
Signed by me at 746 Old South Bldg., Boston, Mass., this 13th day `of Deeen'iber,
ROSELL F. PHIQLPS.
