Description

R. M. PUTNAM RIPPLE AND BUBBLE ELIMINATOR Filed July 11 INVENTOR. 777, 6a
W MM, WARNEYS.
Patented Dec. 1, 1925.
UNITEDv STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RIPPLE AND BUBBLE ELIMINATOR.
Application led July 11, 1925. Serial No. 43,046.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, RUSSELL M. PUTNAM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Oconto Falls, in the county of Oconto and State of IVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ripple and Bubble Eliminators, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in ripple and bubble eliminators, more particularly adapted for use with paper making machines.
In the manufacture of paper, considerable trouble is experienced, due to the fact that bubbles form in the thin sheet of pulp which is fed from the pulp vat. to the Fourdrinier wire screen endless belt, with the result that the paper formed is provided with thin spots. Furthermore, the pulp, in passing from the vat to the screen, is apt to ripple, and the paper will therefor be of uneven thickness.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and provide a means for breaking up the bubble formation and smoothing out the ripples so that a more even paper results which is free from thin spots.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ripple and bubble eliminator which may be easily attached to ordinary machines now in use and which may be adjusted to fit machines having Fourdrinier screens Vof different widths.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ripple and bubble eliminator which may be easily adjusted to form paper of different thicknesses.
A further object of the invention is to provide a ripple and bubble eliminator which is of simple construction, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purpose described.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved ripple and bubble eliminator and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawing in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. 1. is a top view of the improved ripple and bubble ,eliminator shown connected to a portion of a pulp vat and paper making machine;
Fig. 2 is an end view of the eliminator and a transverse sectional view of the pulp vat; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the eliminator taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates a portion of a pulp vat which is provided with a vertically adjustable gate or door 6 for controlli-ng the flow of pulp to the Fourdrinier screen endless belt 7 mounted cna roller 8 and forming part of a paper machine. rlhe improved ripple and bubble eliminator 9 is provided with U- shaped brackets 10 which are adapted to hook over the gate 6 .and are adjustably connected thereto by bolts 11 and 12. The bolts 11 are threaded horiaontally through the inner portions of brackets and impinge against the inner side of the gate 6 to clamp the brackets tightly to the gate while the upper bolts 12 are threaded vertically through the upper portions of the brackets and bear on top of the flange 6 of the gate 6 to adjust the height of the brackets before clamping the brackets to the gate. Nuts 11 and 12 are mounted on the bolts 11 and 12 to lock the same against accidental turning when in adjusted position.
The outer end portions of the bracket have openings for receiving a hinge pin rod 13 and upon this rod are pivotally mounted hinge leaves 14, 15 and 15. The leaves 15 and 15 are also slidably mounted on the rod 13 to permit adjustment of the parts while the leaf 14: extends on each side Vof the center bracket 10 and is only hingedly movable on said rod. The leaf members 15 and'15 are connected to the upper portions of floating members or plates 16 and 17, respectively by rivets 18. The said plate 16 has a lower ilatsurface and overlaps the plate 17 and is provided with upturned front and rear `flanges 18. The floating member or plate 17 also has a lower flat surface and is provided with upturned and vdownwardly folded flanges 19 to form groove ways 2O into which the flanges 18 slidably extend so that the length of the floating member can be adjusted to fit the width of the Fourdrinier screen. In adjusting the plates, the eyed portions 21 of the hinge leaves 15 and 15 slide on the rod or pin 13 while the central leaf 14 is maintained in its position as before mlloned, Cotter pins extend through end portions of the pivot -pin rod 13 to prevent the accidental removal of the plates 16 and 17. The said plates are held in adjusted position by means ot a bolt 23 which extends through elongated slots 24C formed in the overlapped portions of the plates and in the central hinge leaf 14C. The bolt also extends through an elongated washer 25 mounted on the central leaf lla and is provided with a nut 26 for clamping the parts together. The bolt 2S is provided with an elongated head 23 which in connection with the elongated washer 25, covers the elongated .slots 211 and prevents the entrance of pulp therein. The `portion of the bolt 23 extending through the elongated slots is flattened and of a V.width corresponding to .the width of the slots as indicated by the numeral 26 to prevent the bolt turning in the slots, while the central portions 24 of the slots are of :the same diametersv as the bolt 23 to .permit .the removal of said bolt.
In use, the parts are ymounted on the pulp :vat gate as shown, with the plates or members 16 vand 17 resting or floating on the surfaceofthe thinlilm of .pulp Aflowing ,from :the `fvat and being carried by the lourdrinier belt, yand as the pulp travels Vbeneath the `floating member and in engage- .ment therewitlntheair bubbles will be broken up and the spaces vcaused thereby will be filled with the pulp. The ripples or .undulations of the .pulp will also be leveled .by engagement with the Heating member so that the resultant paper will be smooth `and free from thin spots.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the ripple and bubble eliminator is of very simple construction and can be easily attached to vthe ordinary paper making machine, and when not in use can be .swung upwardly against the gate.
What :I claim as my invention is: l, The combination witha paper making machine including `a pulp vat and an endless belt, kof va ripple and bubble eliminator therefor, comprising bracket means for con- .nection with the pulp vat, anda floating member pivotally connected to the bracket means and positioned abovethe endless belt and engaging vthe pulp carried thereby.
