UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TELFORD CLARENCE BATCHELOIR AND CYRIL TELFORD LATCH, OF BIRMINGHAM,
ENGLAND.
ELEVATOR CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed March 9, 1925. Serial No. 14,228.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that TnLFoRo CLARENCE BATCHELOR and CYRIL TELFORD LATCH, subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Hay Mills, Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevator Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of wire ropes and guides or conductors, especially those used as rubbing guides between two cages in a shaft to prevent them coming in contact when passing one another, and consists in constructing the ropes or guides in such a manner, or in applying means thereto, whereby the diameter, where desired, can be increased to such an extent as to prevent the possibility of the cages touching one another at the point of passing, the weight of the guide not necessarily being increased but in the majority of cases can be materially reduced.
Our invention will be fully understood from the following description aided by the examples of construction shown on the an nexed drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a rope formed from six round wires spirally wound round a single wire core and showing the enlarged portion. 1
Figure 2 is a section on a larger scale on the line 22 of Figure 1, the rope at that portion not being enlarged.
Figure 3 is a section on a larger scale on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 and showing the enlarged portion.
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic illustration of two cages and ropes with their sheaves and showing the position of the enlarged portion of the ropes with regard to the cages when they are passing each other. 7
Figure 5 is a section on the line 55 of Figure 4.
\Vith a rope of say six wires A wound round a single wire core B the enlargement may be made by forming the centre, heart or core of the guide of a double cone ended rod C of any suitable material and of the desired length and cutting off the single wire core B and then covering the whole length of the enlarged portion so as to form the increased diameter portion E, with the outside cover or covers of Wires or strands,
which may be round or other than round in cross-sectlon, and then addlng the smgle wlre core B and wmdmg the other wlres around same to complete the rope, so that a portion E of the rope of guide at a point where the cages assone another will be of larger diameter than that on either side of it. This will be understood from Figures 1 to 3.
The enlargement of the guide rope may be I nation, a pair of cages and a rubbing guiderope positioned therebetween, said rope having an enlarged part included in that p0r tlon of sald rope which lies between the cages while they are passing.
2. In an elevator construction, in combination with a pair of cages, a rubbing guide rope positioned therebetween, said rope comprising an outer layer of strands and a central rod about which said strands are wound, said rod being formed with an oppositely tapered enlarged part included in that portion of the rope which lies between the cages while they are passing, whereby a corresponding enlargement is produced in the adjacent portion of said outer layer.
3. In an elevator construction, a guide rope including an intermediate part, and portions adjoining said part, said portions comprising an outer layer of strands and a central core of substantially uniform diameter, about which said strands are wound, said core being discontinuous throughout said intermediate part, and a core portion of larger diameter, in said intermediate part, the same being tapered at both ends to. the diameter of the core in said adjoining portions, and abutting the ends thereof.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set, our hand.
