COMBINATION HOUSING AND OILER.
Application filed November 21, 1922. Serial No. 602,433.

Be it known that we, HnRsHnL A. BENE- nrc'r and EDYARD M, MoLLnR, citizens of the United States, residing at East Orange and Jersey City, respectively, in the counties of Essex and Hudson and State of New Jersey,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Housings and Oilers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combination housing and oiler and more particularly combination of a housing with the oiler shown in our previous application Serial Number 518,07 8 of November 26th, 1921.
The objects of the invention are to provide improved means for oiling the bearings of an electric motor and car axle as employed in connection with electrically propelled vehicles such as railway cars; to lighten the structure and at the same time 0b,-
tain a constant supply of oil to the bearing; to enable the device to be adapted to motors and axles now in use; to provide a closed structure so as to exclude dirt, dust and foreign matter; to secure simplicity of construction and operation, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an electirc motor of the street railway type with one of the housings and oilers attached;
Figure 2 is an end view of the housing showing a portion thereof in section with the oiler attached;
Figure 3 is a side view looking toward the right hand side of Figure 2;
Figure 41 is an end view of a portion of the motor casing showing an oiler for the axle bearing;
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional View through the bearing showing the oiler in place, and
Figure 6 is a plan of a portion of a motor casing showing the place of attachment for the oilers.
In the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in said drawings, the reference numeral 1 indicates in general the v and L shaped bolt 15 is inserted motor casing having axle bearings 22 in alinement with each other for receiving the car axle. It is to be understood that the axle shown in Figures 5 and 6 and desig nated by numeral 3 is suitably driven through the agency of gears, chains or otherwise, from a motor contained within casing 1. One end of the armature shaft 4 of said motor is shown in Figures 1 and 3. The armature shaft is supported at its opposite ends in a bearing housing 5, which housing is an essential part of thepresent invention. Said housing includes a flanged top portion 6 which is secured within a corresponding opening in the motor casing 1 and held against movement thereon. Extending outwardly from said top portion 6 is a collar 7 suitably reinforced by brackets 8, and extending through said collar and top portion 6 is a bearing opening 9 for receiving the armature shaft 4. Obviously by the construction thus decsribed, all excess material is eliminated and at the same time a very strong and efiicient bearing is obtained.
Projecting upwardly from the collars 7 is a funnel shaped receptacle 10 adapted to contain waste or any other suitable absorbent or carrier 11 for the lubricant. The bottom of said funnel shaped receptacle 10 has an opening or passageway 12 at the bottom thereof communicating with the bearing opening 9. This permits the lubricant or the carrier saturated with the lubricant to be constantly in contact with the armature shaft 4-. The top of the receptacle 10 is provided with a closure 13 so as to exclude all dust, dirt or foreign matter.
In order to supply lubricant to the rece tacle 10 or the carrier 11, I employ a sultable oiler 14 similar to the oiler referred to in our prior application above mentioned. In order to attach said oiler to the housing with one leg 16 extending laterally through the side of the housing through a hole 17 for the purpose, and the other leg of said bolt pro ects upwardly through the top closure 13. This structure enables the oiler to be very conveniently and quickly attached, and positions the same securely in place so that the oil or lubricant will feed continuously to the recepetacle 10.
Utilization of the oiler is not confined to oiling the armature shaft bearing, but the same oiler is also employed in connection claims when construed in the light of me with the axle shaft bearing. This is indicated in Fig. 1 by holes '18, 18 of the motor casing 1 above axle bearings 2, and is more elaborately illustrated in Figure 4, 5 and 6. In said figures, a suitable funnel shaped ijeceptacle 19 is provided corresponding to the funnel shaped receptacle 10 in the foregoing description and the preceding figures of the drawing. This receptacle is retained in said hole 18 in any suitable manner, such asby shrinking it'into place, orother-wise. Furthermore, the saidreceptacle is provided with a lateral opening through which one leg of a bolt 20 projects for securing oiler 1.4 in place. In this way the oiler functions in connection with the axle bearing the same as the oiler functions in connection with the armature bearing. It is also to be noted that we preferably provide a top closure 21 for the receptacle 19 similar to the top closure 13 for receptacle 10 heretofore described.
=Oviously detail changes and modifications may be ,made in the manufacture, application and use of our invention, and we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves except as set forth in the following prior art.
Having thus described our invention, we claim l. A bearing for encased motors and the like comprising a body adapted .to seat and be secured in a suitable orifice in the motor casing, a hub part extending axially from the body, the body and hub provided with a bore adapted to receive a shaft to be supported, the hub formed with a funnelshaped offset, said funnel comn unicating with the bore, and a container seated on the top of the funnel-shaped part and adapted to drain thereinto.

A bearing for encased motors and the like,comprising a body secured to the motor casing, a hub part extending axially from .thebody, thebody and the hub provided with a bore adapted to receive a shaft to be supported, the hub formed with a .fun- ,nel shaped oifset, said funnel communicating with the bore, and container seated on the top of ,the funnel shaped part and adaptedto drain thereinto.
