IMPROVEMENT IN SEED-PLANTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,148, dated October 20, 1874 application filed January 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES FRANKISH, of Abilene, in the county of Dickinson and State of Kansas,have invented a new and Improved Seed-Planter; and that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention is an improvement in the class of corn or seed dropping devices adapted for attachment to the beam of an ordinary turn ing or furrowing plow. The improvement relates, first, to the means of attachment of the colter or pilot wheel, and seed-dropping devices, to the plow-beam; second, to the adaptation of parts for removal of said cylinder from its case, and from the shaft of the revolving pilot-wheel.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention attached to plowbeam; Fig. 2, an edge view of same, partly in section; Fig. 3, detail, showin g wiper and cut-off.

A represents a receptacle or hopper for the seed. This hopper is provided with a hinged cover, G, and may be constructed of any desired material and size. It is firmly secured to a metallic arm, B. This arm being secured to or forming partof the supporting-plate 0. Within said hopper, and to the bottom D thereof, is affixed a wiper, a. This wiper is constructed with a T-shaped head, b, from which extends a stem, 0. This stem passes through a guide, 01, secured to the bottom of the hopper, within which and around the stem 0 is placed a coiled spring, e. The T-shaped head of this wiper enters slightly into the throat f of the hopper. Cast with or otherwise connected to the lower side or bottom D of the hopper is a projection, E, having a cylindrical opening therein, into which is fitted a cut-off, g. Passing through the plate 0 and arm B, and extending through said opening in the projection E is a shaft, h. This shaft is so constructed as to revolve freely. within suitable bearings formed in said plate and arm, and that portion of the shaft which extends into the opening is squared; and onto said shaft, and between the plate 0 and arm B, is a wheel, F. To the lower side of the projection E is secured a spout or nozzle, t, this spout being so constructed as to revolve freely within an opening made in the under side of said projection. To the rear side of the cutoff 9 is secured a rod, j. Fitting within the opening in the projection E is a cylinder, It. In the periphery of this cylinder are formed two rows or series of cup-like recesses, m. These recesses are formed, as shown in Fig. 2, and are arranged in break-joint fashion, with a central rib dividing the two rods. The cylinder has through its center a square hole, corresponding in size to the square of the shaft h that extends through the projection E, and. it is of such size as will enable it to revolve freely within the opening of the projec tion E. As the cylinder is revolved by means of the wheel F, the seed is discharged in a constant and evenly-flowing stream, since it begins to leave a cavity, m, of one row just as it is ceasing to flow from the one diagonally opposite, and preceding it in the order of rotation. The quantity of seed discharged is, within certain limits, regulated by the wiper b, since the latter exerts a yielding pressure on the periphery of the cylinder 7c. The tension of the spring, and thereby the pressure of the wiper on the cylinder, is controlled and adjusted by the screw. To this end the arrangement of the screw and wiper in relation to the guide d and bottom of the hopper is specially adapted.
The function of the cut-off g is to partially or entirely close the bottom of the hopper, and control the exit of seed accordingly.
The adjustment of the wheel F higher or lower is eifected by means of nuts 12 on clutches or hook-rods n, which take into notches o in the vertical plate 0. The threaded ends of the rods n pass through a slot in plate 1". This slot is elongated to adapt the attachment for beams of different or varying thickness.
The cylinder is may be readily removed, for any cause or purpose which renders it desirable or necessary, by removing the knob s which screws onto the end of the shaft h.
I do not claim a clamp for attaching a seedhopper or a cultivating device to the beam of a plow, which allows the same to be vertically adjusted; nor do I claim a spring-actuated.
