DEVICE FOR PREVENTING THUMB SUCKING.
Application filed November 8, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA L. Bros, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, King County, Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Preventing Thumb Sucking, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to means for preventing thumb sucking by babies, and has for its principal object to provide a device for this purpose in the form of a stiffened sleeve which may be applied to the arm and which is equipped with ties that may be extended and secured about the baby to hold the sleeve properly in place.
A further object resides in the provision of such a sleeve wherein stiffening ribs are inserted and which prevent the arm from being bent at the elbow in such manner that the baby could put its thumb in its mouth.
Other objects of the invention reside in the manner of constructing the sleeve so that it may be easily applied and secured in place, which will permit the, baby the use of its arm for all ordinary purposes, and which provides for removal of the stiffening ribs, or slints, when it is desired that the sleeve be washed.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, I have provided the improved details of construction, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device embodying the present invention as used.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the sleeve removed, particularly illustrating the pockets on the interior wherein the stiffening ribs, or splints, are inserted.
Figure 3 is an outside perspective view of the sleeve, a part of which is broken away for better illustrating the position of the ribs.
Figure 4 is a transverse, section taken on the line l4 in Figure Referring more in detail to the draw ings 1 designates the device in its entirety. It consists mainly of a sleeve like body 2 made of a suitable cloth, or other material, and of Serial No. 673,480.
such size and length that the arm of the baby on which it is to be used, may be extended comfortably thereinto. The upper portion of the sleeve forming material is extended well over the shoulder and at the forward and rearward sides continues to provide the tie straps 3 and 4 which may be extended about the body and under the other arm, after the sleeve has been applied, as shown in Figure 1, and their ends fastened together by means of a pin 5, or the like, to thereby hold the sleeve in place.
Within the sleeve is a lining strip 6 that is stretched to the outer body portion at the wrist, and by means of a plurality of parallel lines of stitching 7 provides pockets 8 wherein stiffening ribs 9 of wood or other suitable material, are placed. The upper ends of the pockets 8 are open, and the ribs,
or splints, may be removed when it is desired to wash the sleeve.
These ribs are of such length that they extend from near the wrist to substantially above the elbow and are located on the inside, so that they will prevent bending of the arm at the elbow to such extent that the baby could get its thumb in its mouth. The size of the sleeve, its length and also the length of its stiffening ribs could be varied as needed in order to meet the requirements.
Such device can be easily applied and will not interfere with the ordinary uses or exercising of the arm, and will effectively serve the purpose for which it is intended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A device of the class described, comprising a sleeve applicable to the arm with its upper end portions at the front and back extended to form elongated straps adapted to be secured together about the body, a lining for the sleeve stitched thereto about the lower end of the sleeve and longitudinally of the sleeve forming a plurality of pockets open at their upper ends and stiffening ribs located removably in said pockets.
