in Side Frames for Trucks, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved side frame for trucks and more par-4 ticularly to a pressed steel side frame havingha journal box formed integrally therewit Various types of pressed steel side frames have heretofore been made, but such frames have had separately formed ljournal boxes secured thereto. These boxes have usually been held in place by bolts, which connes tion is unsatisfactory for taking care of load stresses as it tends to work loose under service vibrations.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a pressed steel side frame construction in which a journal box is formed integrally therewith.
It is a further object to provide construction of this character in which the side frame is formed of two portions joined on a median plane with a journal box formed of two portions similarly joined.
It is an additional object to provide a construction of this character in which the side frame and journal box portions are so formed that each portion has complete wall structure.
It is also an object to provide a construe tion in which the adjacent portions of the journal box and side frame are formed by reverse bends, the folds of the reverse bends of the two side frame portions being welded together.
Other and further objects will appear as the description proceeds.
I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention in the accompanying` drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a lan view of one-half of a side frame and journal box;
Figure 2 is a face view of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an end view of Figure 1 as seen from the left;
Figure 4lis a section taken on line 4 4 of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a section taken on line 5 5 of Figure 2.
The side frame consists in two side frame members 11 and 12 which are welded to gether on the median line 13. As shown in section. 1*41, certain portions ef the fran-ie are completely closed5 the two members being U shaped in cross section and both legs of the U meeting. Other portions such as the tension member 14e, shown in cross section in Figure 5, are open on one side, one leg of the U being longer than the Y other.
The journal box comprises two portions 15 and 16. The portion 15 is integral with the side frame portion 12 and the portion 16 is integral with the side frame portion 11.
The journal box portion 15 has a hinge member 17 welded thereto, and the member 18 is welded into the journal box portion 16 to forni a pocket for the usual type of dust guard. As shown in Figure 1, the side of the journal box adjacent the side frame is formed by portion 19 which is connected by the reverse bend 2O with the side 21 of the side frame. The side ofportion 16 of the journal box is similarly connected by a reverse bend to the side frame member 11.
As shown in Figure 3 the upper surface 22 of the journal box portion 15 is connected by the reverse bend 23 with the lower face 24 of the-end of the side frame member 12. The upper surface of the journal box portion 16, as shown in Figure 3, is similarly connected to the side frame member 11. These two reverse bends meet on the median plane and are welded together as indicated at 25.
rlhe construction shown permits the formation of the journal box at the same time that the two side frame members are formed. The two portions of the journal box are welded together as the side frame members are welded. The dust guard retaining member 18 will be welded in place in the portion 16 of the journal box before the two faces are joined and the plates 26 and 27 may be similarly put in place before the joining welds are made.
This construction affords a journal box rigidly and permanently connected to the side frame. Whilel l have shown one specific embodiment of such a construction by wav of example, I contemplate changes and modifications to meet varying conditions and requirements, such as come within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
I claim:
l. Truck side treme construction comprising a pressed steel side frame and a` pressed steel journal box formed integrally with tno side frame.
2. Truck side frame construction compris` ing a pressed steel side frame, the side frame being formed oi two pressed steel members joined by Welding on a, vertical longitudinal plane and n journal box, portions of the bor; beine' iormed integrzillfT With each olf the two pressed steel side Ytrame members` Truck side 'traine construction Comprising ai pressed stoel side iframe, the side irzime being' formed two pressed steel joined b v Welding on n verri l lo plaine :ind s, journal box, portions or tno being iorined integrally with each ol the two nressed steel side freine members.y said portions being!- Weldod together in the seme plane as the side frame men'ibers.
si. Truck side iframe construction comprisinn' s pressed steel side treme, the side treme being formed of two pressed steel members joined by Welding` on :i vertical longitudinal plane :ind e journal box7 portions of the box being i'ormed integrelljT with each of the two pressed. steel side frame niembers said portions being connected to the side freine portions by reverse folds whereby side frame and box wells located adjacent to euch other.
5. Truck side frame construction comprisine` av pressed steel side freine. the trame being lormed olf two pressed steel members joined by welding on :i vertical longitudinal plane :intl e, journal box, portions ol the box being toi-ined integrrilljY with each o'l the two pressed steel side trame members, said portions beinp; conneeted to the side frame portions bj' reverse Jfolds whereby side freine and box wells are locsten adjacent to eac-l1 other. the reverse folds of the two side frame members abuttingl and being Welded together:
