Be it known that we, BERTHO D 'JAHN I and ERNEST EMIL KAHL, citizens of the 1 United States, residing at New Britain, in
the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple Binders, bf which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in staple binders,. corresponding in certain features to the device shown and describedin our application Serial No. 447 ,224, filed Feb.
23, 1921, andthe object of our improvement is simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efficiency in use.

Our improved staple bindercomprises certain fundamental features of construction and operation that are similar to features that are "found in the device shown and described in the application referred to above.
Thus there is the base 10 that has the anvil Eat the front end for clenching the staples 12 in cooperation with the plunger 13 after they have been severed from the staple strip to which they are connected as supplied-to the machine and are forced downwardly by the continued movement of the said plunger.
At the rear end of the base 10 is a pair of upstanding cars 14, in spaced relation, that support the pivotal pin 15.
The base 10 serves as thefixed member, and a moving member, designated generally by the character 16, is operativelyconnected thereto by the pivotal pin 15.

At the upper, front part of the casing, being at the upper ends of the ways 17, is a seat 28 for a spring 29 that cooperates with a knob 30 at the upper'end of the plunger 13 so as to tend to hold the said plunger in the uppermost position.
The staple strip feeding mechanism is similar to that shown and described in the application above referred to, being actuated by a lug 31'on the plunger 13, and comprising afeeding pawl 32 and a holding pawl 33.
The feeding pawl 32 is supported by a pivotally sup-ported dog 34, the latter havmg a lug 35 cooperating with the lug 31,0n the plunger 13, and a spring 36 servegato position the said feeding pawl 32 rel 'tively v to the dog 34.

The side walls 49 are provided with suit-,
able holes 61 in alignment for the front holding screw 25 that holds the side plates 19 in place and also serves to hold the die 21 in the operative position. Also, the side walls fit against the undersides of the shoulders 47 in the filler piece 18.
The rear wall 43 of the. way 17 has been described, corresponding to the front edge of the indented body portion 38. A flat or plain border encloses the said body portion 38. The part 62 of the-said fiat border portion in front of the rear guide wall 43 constitutes the side wall of the way 17. The front wall of the way 17 is formed by an inwardly turned flange 63 on the sideplate 19, being turned inwardly from the edge of the side wall 62- just described.
At the upper endof the way 17 is the seat 28 for the spring 29, as mentioned, and
the front portion of the said seat 28 is in h the form of a forwardly directed finger 64 that is integralwith the inner edge of the guide flange 63.

A plurality of'rivets 68 integral with the fin structure 40 may be used to hold the same in place.
In addition to the integralrivets 68 the fin structure 40 has at the upper end a forwardly directed lug 69 that extends through a slot 70 in the plunger body 39 and on the rear or inner side or ed c has intermediate its length a shoulder with the opposed portion 74 of the casing 3 for cooperating for limiting the upward movement of the plunger.
Thus at the upper end of the plunger 13 is'provided a seat 71 for the knob 30, comprising the plunger body 39 and the fin structure 40 at right angles, one to the other,
the edges of these parts being opposed to the said knob 30." Upwardly extending riyets 72,, integral with the plunger body 39,
serve to hold the knob 30 in place.
As described, the under face of the knob 30 makes contact with the upper, tip end of the plunger body 39 and also the fin structure, wherefore, when a'blow is given to the knob to, .drive the plunger 13 the knob serves as the means for transmitting the effect of the blow directly to these parts of the plunger.
We claim as our invention 1. A staple binder comprising a base a member pivoted thereto comprising a casing composed of a pair of opposed sheet metal side plates, a filler piece positioned between the lower portions of the side plates, a die atone end of said filler piece, the upper portion of". said filler piece being reduced in width so as to serve as guide for a staple strip, feed devices in said casing, a plunger reciprocating in said casing and provided with a cutting edge for cooperation with said die and means for operating said feed devices, a spring seated upon said casing tending to elevate said plunger, and said plates comprising fiat border portions and centrally indented portions arranged to provide flanges along the lateral edges of said plunger and flanges adjacent the filler piece for holding a staple strip thereon.

A staple binder as described in claim .1 in which the said filler piece is made of a piece of sheet metal of elongated form, bent along longitudinal, parallel lines so as to ave an approximately U-shape of cross-section, and is provided with shoulders at the junction of the upper, reduced portion and the lower portion,
3. In a staple binder, a .filler piece operating as a way or support for the staple strip and comprising a piece of sheet metal of elongated form, bent along longitudinal,
parallel lines so as to have an approximately U-shape cross-section, and with shoulders at the sides denoting the junction of the lower portion and an upper, reduced portion and a die cooperating with one end portion of said filler piece, said die having a supporting portion that is housed in said lower portion.
4. In a staple binder as described in claim 3 in which said supporting portion is opposed .to the inner and lower sides of sa1d shoulders.
5. In a staplebinder as described in claim 3 in which the supporting portion for the die which is housed within the lower pox tion of the filler piece includes a pair of side plates which are opposed to the side faces of the filler piece and a holding screw extendin' through the side faces of the filler piece an the side plates of the die supporting portion. 6. In. a staple binder, a casing, a filler piece extended along the lower side of the .casing to serve as a guide for the staple strip and a support for the side portions of the said casing, the said filler piece being made of a single piece of sheet metal, bent approximately into U-shape cross-section, with longitudinally directed shoulders at the junction of the 'upper, staple strip receiving portion and the lower portion anda die having a supporting portion that telescopes with one end portion of said filler piece, whereby each is adapted to serve as a reinforcement of the other.
7. In a staple binder, a filler piece constituting a part of the casing structure and having a die at one end, the said die being in the form of a separate piece, having a cutter-plate portion that fits against the end of the filler piece and having other supporting portions that serve as supports for the said cutter-plate portion, the said supporting portions and the end portion of the filler piece being constructed and .arranged to overlap for connecting the die to the filler piece and said die being formed of a single piece of material of generally skeleton form.
8 In a staple binder as described in claim 7 1n which a single screw serves as the means for holding the die in place at the end of the filler piece, and the parts that repositioned at one end of a filer piece, thesaid die being formed of a piece of sheet material, having a cutter plate with a cutting edge at one end, and having connected to the said cutter-plate a supporting structure that is adapted to be connected to the said filler piece and said cutter-plate bein positioned in abutment with the end said filler piece.

In a staple binder, a filler piece having ace of an open end, a die having a supporting portion that telescopes into the said open end, and a cutter plate positioned at one end of said supporting portion, and said cutter plate and supporting portion being integrally connected by opposed edge portions.
12. In a staple binder having a plunger that is operatively mounted for reciprocat-' ing in a casing and has a cutting ed e for cooperating with a die that is fixed 1n the said casing, the said plunger having a plunger body that is provided with the said cutting edge, the said plunger'body being made of sheet material and said plunger body having a longitudinally directed reinforcing rib and a fin structure, also of sheet material, extending from adjacent the lower end of said body upwardly-along one face thereof for the major portion of the length of said lpody, said fin structure being secured to said ace.
13. In aistaple binder comprising a plunger having a plunger body that has a cuttin edge and a fin structure mounted on the sai body and serving to operate feed mechanism for feeding a staple strip, the said plunger bodyhaving a longitudinal rib on one face and having on the opposite face a groove to conform to the said rib, and the said fin structure being seated in the said groove.
14. In a staple binder as described in claim 12 in which the plunger body has a groove and-the fin structure is seated in said groove.
15. In a staple binder as described in claim 13 in which the said plunger body and fin structure format their upper ends a seat for a knob.
16. In a staple binder, a lunger body having-a fin structure mounte on one face, the upper ends on the said body and fin structure terminating in a seat for a knob, and the said fin structure having at its upper end a lug that extends through a slot in the plunger body so as to provide an extension of the said seat on the side of the other face of the plunger body.
17. In a staple binder, a plunger body and a fin structure mounted on one face thereof, the plunger body having a slot at the upper end, and the fin structure having an extension in the form of a lug that" fits and extends through the said slot. K
