a sufficient extent. A. cross pin 19 is also arranged through the side bars of the plu ig stem slightly forwardly of the cross bar 11, and the extremities of the pin 19 extend into a. pair of elongated guide slots 20 arranged in the sides of an inner frame 21, which, as best shown in Figs. 3' and at, is mounted within the frame Tbetween the abutment 16 and the trigger 18. The trigger 18 is pivoted within the frame 7 on the bolt 22 and is normally pressed forwardly-bymea'ns of a light coil spring 23 positioned between a lug 21 on the'trigger and the forward extremity of the stock 5. A channeled trigger guard 25 is also pivoted on the bolt 22 and straddles the projecting portion 18 of the trigger, a finger, engaging portion 25 being arranged" forwardly of the projecting portion 18 of the trigger so that the finger of the person shooting the gun will contaotthe' trigger guard and not the trigger itself. As long as the trigger guard is free to move on the pivot bolt 22 the person shooting the gun need only to press rearwardly upon the trigger guard in the usual manner of shooting in order to release the compressed power spring 10 and so shoot a projectile then contained within the barrel 13, the rearward movement of the lower portion of the trigger guard 25 bringing the port-ion '25 into engagement with the portion 18 of the trigger and then further movement swinging the trigger simultaneously with the trigger guard to lower the sear 17 out of engagement with the cross bar 11 of the plunger'ste'm. -Provisions are made, however, for interposing a safety latch 26 below the laterally projecting lugs 25 of the trigger guard (note Fig. 16) whenever the spring compressing means is out of its normal inoperative position, as will. be hereinafter more fully described.
The power spring compressing 5 means comprises a hand block 27 slidably mounted upon a guide rod 28' below and parallel to the barrel 6, a lever 29 having a rolling fulcrum on the inner frame 21 and. connected with the hand block 27 by the link 30, and
a contact finger 31 pivoted on the lever 29 and engaging the forward portion of the cross pin 19 carried by the stem 11 0f the plunger 11. As best shown in Figs. 3 and 4e the lever 29i's formed with aplurality of teeth 29* adjacent one extremity, which teeth mesh with a stationary rack 32 on the inner frame 21 to provide a constant positive engagement between the lever and the stationary frame regardless of the posimal position. The operation of my improved power spring compressing means is believed to be apparent. lVhenever the hand block 27 is slid rearwardly.upon the guide rod 28 the lever 29 is rocked from the position shown in Fig. 3 to substantially the position shown in Fig. l, the lever 29 rolling upon the stationary rack 32 and carryin the contact finger 31 and plunger 11 longitudinally rearward until the cross bar 11 on the rear extremity of the plunger stem passes over the sear 17 of the trigger and enters the notch 18 in the trigger.
permits the downward swinging movement of the sear 17 as the cross bar 11 passes thereover, and then returns the sear to its original position, catching the cross bar 11 and holding the plunger in substantially the position shown in Fig. 4. The hand block 27 is then slid forwardly to its normal position, returning the lever 29, link 30 and contact finger 31 to substantially the position shown in Fig. '3. This return movement of the contact finger in no way affects the position of the plunger stem for the finger 31 is not secured to the plunger stem but merely engages the forward portion of the cross pin 19 carried by the plunger stem. .Accordingly, the forward movement of the lever 29 moves the contact finger away from the cross pin 19.
During the swinging movement of the lever 29 to compress the power spring 10 the safety latch 26 is moved into position to prevent the downward swinging of the'trigger guard 25 to thereby prevent the accidental pulling of the trigger 18 before the power-spring compressing means has been returned to its nor- As best shown in Figs. 2 and The trigger springside of the inner frame 21 and ismovably tremity of the safety latch26. Adjacent its rear extremity the latch 26 is provided with an inwardly and upwardly bent tab 26: (note Fig. 13) which extends through an elongated slot 38 in the frame 21. The rear portion of the slot 38 is directly beneath the normal position of the laterally extending lugs 25" on the trigger guard 25, and whenever the latch 26 is moved to its rearmost position the tab 26 engages under one of the lugs 25 of the trigger guard to prevent the swinging of the trigger guard into engagement with the trigger 18. Upwardly extending lugs 26 and 26 are pro vided adjacent the extremities of the safety latch 26 in position to be contacted by the guide pins 33 and 35 respectively during the swinging operation of the power spring compressing means. Thus, whenever the hand block 27 is slid rearwardly to compress the ower spring 10, the guide pin 35 carried by t e contact finger 31 will engage the forward extremity of the rear lug 26 and io've the safety latch 26 rearwardly as far as permitted by the slot 3-7, in so doing moving the tab 26 into engagement with the underside of the lugs 25 of the trigger guard. The safety latch remains in this position, preventing the swinging of the trigger guard, until, during the return movement of the power spring compressing means, the guide pin 33 carried by the lever 29 contacts the rear extremity of the forward lug 26 and moves the safety latch 26 forwardly as far as permitted by the slot 37,
in so doing sliding the tab 26 out of the path of movement of the lugs 25 of the trigger guard. The forward lug 26 is so positioned relatively to the guide pin 33 that it will be engaged by the pin 33 only when the spring compressing means has been almost completely returned to its normal inoperative position, and detachment of the tab 26 from the lug 25 of the trigger occurs only when the power compress ing means s r a he its ex r m f rward position.
The mechanism for successively feeding projectiles to the inner barrel 13 will now be described. An elongated container 12 houses a comparatively light spring 38 (note Fig, 7) abutting at its forward extremity upon the screw 39 or other means for closing the forward extremity of the container 12 and at its rear extremity against a traveler 40 adapted to move longitudinally of the container under the impulse of the spring 38. The. rear extreinity of the container is provided with an aperture ll arranged to align with an aperture 42 in the upper portion of the inner barrel 13, aninclined lug 43, being arranged ab ve the a erture 41 to guide shot i lor other projectiles ro gh the align d; nertures into the barrel 13. In. loading, the
container .12 is removed from its normal position within the outer barrel 6 and av plu rality of projectiles 44; inserted through the aperture 41 into the container, the spring 38 being compressed and the traveler 4O moved toward the forwardextremity of the container as the projectiles are introduced. When a sufficient number of projectiles have been inserted within the container 12, it is returned to the position shown 7. a spring latch 45 being pro in Fig. I vided to retain themagaziuexin position as long as desired. As best shown. in
Fig. 11 the latch e5 is secured at itsrear extremity to the container 12 and is provided with a burr 46 adapted to contact the rear face of the end closure 47 of the barrel 6. The forward extremity of. the latch 45 is bent, substantially asshown at 48, to provide a finger contact whereby the burr tti may be readily swung out ofengagemen with-the closure 47 to permit the witlid r tw of the magazine whenever it is desired to reload.

5. In a gun, the combination of a stationary frame, a power spring, aplunger engaging one extremity of the spring, and means for compressing the spring including a leverhaving a rolling fulcrum on the frame, a member carried by the lever and engaging the plunger stem, means for rocking the lever, and means for preventing the accidental dislocation of the lever and said member from the frame including guide P1118 secured in the lever and member respecspectively, there being a pair of aligned guide slots arranged 1n the frame and receiving the extremities of said guide pins.
7. In a gun, the combination of a stationary frame, a power spring, a plunger engaging one extremity of the spring, and means for compressing the spring including a lever having a rolling fulcrum on the frame, a member carried by the lever and engaging the plunger stem, means for rock ing the lever, a trigger arranged to catch the plunger stem when the spring is compressed, a trigger guard mounted adjacent the trigger, and means under the control of the spring compressing means for preventing the movement of the trigger guard until the spring compressing means has been returned to its normal inoperative position.
8. In a gun, the combination of a stationary frame, a power spring, a plunger engaging one extremity of the spring, and means for compressing the spring including a lever having a rolling fulcrum on the frame, a member carried by the lever and engaging the plunger stem, means forrocln ing the lever, a trigger arranged to catch the plunger stem when the spring is compressed, and means under the control of the spring compressing means for preventing the release of the trigger from the plunger stem until the spring compressing means has been returned to normal inoperative position.
