PERFORATING AND SCORING ATTACHMENT FOR PRINTING Application nlea Dewinter` 11, 1924. serial No. 755,271.:y
provements in Perforat-ing and Scoring Attachments for Printing Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to platen printing presses, and more particularly to scoring and perforating appliances therefor, and its object is to provide a novel attachment for this purpose which will be simple in construction and etcient in operation.
In printing presses of the pla-ten type, the platen approaches and recedes from the type form, the inking rollers passing over the latter in a vertical direction while the platen is spaced from the same. Scoring or perforating strips are at times incorporated in the form to serve simultaneously with the printing action, vertical strips of this nature being more frequently employed, such as for the scoring ofvbook co-vers, folders and the like or the perforating of receipt books, order blanks, etc. While form-retainedscoring and perforating strips are efficient for the immediate effect of these operations, they have been found more or less unsatisfactory because of damage incident to their operation. Thus, due to the passage ofthe inking rollers over the form, a coating of ink is given`the scoring or perforating stri s as well, whereby they print, asfthe press c oses, where but scoring or perforating4 is desired; f..
and, due to the prominence of the scoring or perforating strips on the face of the form, the i'nking rollers-made of a yieldwill be outside the pathl of the inking rollers, thus keeping the strips free of ink and the rollers clear of damaging contact.
A further object of my invention is to apply the novel scoring and perforating element as an attachment to the standard gripper carriage, so that the press will require no alterations or additions to adapt it to the new equipment.
A still further object of the invention is .to make it variously .adjustable ,t0 Suit lthev periods without replacement. v v
With the above objects in view, and any others which may suggest themselves from -the description and claimsy to -`follow,'atten,
tion is directed to the accompanying Ydraw- "conditions of the work and serve for long f soV ing forming apart of this specication, 1n Y which Y,

Fig. k3 is a detail section on the line 3%3 J l ofFigl. Y v
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the platen and 6l thegripper carriage 'of a standard printing press', said carriage being hingedly disposed as shown atf7, and having the usual Vhorizontal. slots -8.- The form, inking rollers, or other surrounding plication to the press. Y 1 v.
The novel appliance comprises mainly a .parts of the press have notbeen shown;
pair of laterally spaced-steel bars 9 which are i `laid on the face of the platen in the `manner shown. Each bar is rectangular in crosssection and is outwardly enlarged at the lower end to form a base plate 10 positioned upon the gripper carriage 6.- :Thebase plate 10 has a palr of laterally spacedU openings registering substantially with" the gripper carriage slots r8, the inner` opening 11 being round, `and the outer 12 vertically elongated.; A bolt 13 passes through each opening and through the gripper; carriage 'to .receive` a nut 14 on the other vside of the same, wherebythe bars are secured to the gripper carriage. The extended opening 12 is intended to permit variations in the adjustment of the bar before the bolt is tightened. The two bars 9 are thus capable of beingl adjusted both as to spacing and parallelism. In order that the bars 9 may be rigidly maintained in properly spaced relation at their upper ends, atransverse screw 15 is` loosely 'passed through them thereat, with locking nuts 16 on either side of each bar.,` With the nuts loosened, the bars may be' spaced a predetermined distance, and the adjustment fixed by re-tightening the nuts. The screw 15 may be supplied short as shown, or of a length covering the width of the platen, tosut ,any spacing adjustment,
Toftheside'faeesof each. bar:9.; are secured by screws `17 vtwo steel'strips 1S4 and 1,9.
These project slightly from the visiblefaces l of the strips-as indicated. inUFig'. Sf-tlie strips 18 being'finished vvitlr'a blunt edge 18a, andf-tlie'strips 19- Witli saw-toothed f edge 19a.
In operation, the advancey. oilthe platen upon the forni will carry the appliance along Vfso, as to impress the. signaturey withY crease lines by the scoringfstrips lf and perforation; lines bythe perorating strips 19, the ornnbeing` ofcourse builtiup; With Wooden furniturestrips to provide a suitablerreceivingworbacking` elenientaor the signa-vtureiso impressed.l The bars Q'rnay be used with either the scoring strips or periierating suil'icient'rigidity to. impressthework accu- `rately and uniformly. y
