Be it alrnown that I, JoHN FnnNon GOLD ins, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at New York, in the county oi. New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to door holders and especially such as are of the type set forth in my Patents No. 1,191,891'gra-nted J uly 18, 1916; No. 1,221,528 granted April 3, 1917; and No. 1,255,408 granted-Feb. 5, 1918, the present invention being more nearly related to the second of the three patents above mentioned.
The objects of the improvement are, principally, to give ease of operation to the holder when it is trailing and following the movement of the door and not in looking operation, which is accomplished by an anti- .fricti-on foot element; also to distribute the wear of the foot element, thereby making it more durabie; to provide for the ready sus pension of the swinging elements at a short distance above the floor when the operation of the device is not desired; to improve the construction of the leg member so that it is simple to manufacture and very strong in use; and to improve the construction of the spring element whereby it isinade more convenient of connection with the foot element, and in a balanced manner, and so that it will be made 'stifler by such construction whereby a lighter thickness of metal may be used for such spring element and yet maintain the necessary force or resistance against the swinging of the door when the device is in holding action.
With such objects in view, as well as other advantages which may be incident to the use of the improvements, the invention consists in the parts and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed, with the understanding that the several necessary elements constituting the same may be varied in proportions and arrangements without departing from the nature and scope of the invention.
In order to make the invention more clearly understood there are shown in the accompanying drawings means for 'carryiiig the same into practical effect, without limiting tho iuzprove-n'ients, in their useful applications, to the particular constructions which,

for the purpose of explanation, have been made the subject of illustration.

Referring to the drawings 1 indicates a portion of a door to which the holderis at tached. 2 is the spring member, formed of sheet metal of the appropriate thickness and stiffness, and yet having a yielding function, the same being formed with a vertical part 3, an arch 4 and, a depending part 5 twisted so as to be arranged in vertical planes perpendicular to the door. The part 3 is attached to the door at the proper height from the floor by screws 6 or in any suitable manner. I
The depending part 5 is formed with an upwardly and downwardly extending slot 7 which is provided at its upper part with a shoulder 8 extending towards the door and at its lower part with a shoulder 9 extending away from the door. hen both of these shoulders are employed the slot is preferably of Ssh-ape as illustrated. The upper shoulder 8 is for the suspension of the leg member at a distance above the floor when the holder is not to be used, and the lower shoulder 9 is for engagement with the leg member to hold the latter down relative to the spring member and against the floor when the holder is in holding position.

When the leg member is trailing to follow the door either in the opening or shutting movement of the latter the roller turns freely, and thereby its face which is presented from time to time against the floor for door-holding action is repeatedly changed, so that the whole surface of the roller is subjected to the holding friction and wear and the foot element thus constructed is correspondingly durable. For the purpose of holding the door in a partly open position the roller is at that time automatically held from rotation, which is accomplished by suitable means for that purpose carried by the swinging leg member. As illustrated this leg member is provided with a shoulder 15 which is or may be a cross piece uniting the two side elements of the leg member. Any force attempting to close the door will press the roller against the floor which causes the upper part of the roller to bear against said shoulder 15, by aslight upward movement of the journals 13 in the slots 14, and as such force increases the roller will be more and more tightly held between the floor and said cross piece and securely held from rotation, having at such time the same function as a fixed foot ele ment. This roller is by preference formed of a rubber of medium softness.
It will be understood that when the door is closed the pin 11 will be in the lower part of the slot 7 and the leg will be inclined downward and away from the door. When the door is opened the leg will be turned over to the opposite inclination, the pin 11 sliding up the slot without any engagement with the shoulder 9. When the door is partly or wholly opened the leg member will have turned over and assumed the inclination shown in Fig. 1. If any force be applied to close the door the shoulder 9 will be brought against the pin and the foot and leg will become clamped as already described. This holding action will keep the door in place against the wind or any accidental force, but when the door is intentionally closed the spring member will yield sufficiently to permit the leg to turn into vertical position and then into the trailing position shown in Fig. 3.
The upper ends of the side pieces of the leg are turned outward as best seen in Fig. 52 forming shoulders 16 by either of which the leg may be lifted so that the pin 11 will drop onto the shoulder 8 whereupon the leg and foot will remain suspended out of engagement with the floor and the foot will not be subjected to any wear at all. the device being out of use. A similar lifting by one of said shoulders 16, with a little pressure away from the door will cause the pin 11 to leave the shoulder 8 and drop down the slot 7 whereupon the holder will again be ready for use. The holder may thus be adjusted into suspended or non-suspended position by the toe of the shoe or by the finger of the operator.
The leg member is or may be constructed in one piece from a piece of sheet metal. by cutting the same into the shape indicated in Fig. 5 and thereafter bending the same at the dotted lines until the form shown in the other figures of the drawing is produced, the parts 17 forming side pieces of the leg between which are embraced the spring part 5 and the foot element, the side pieces being strongly united by said cross piece 15 which holds them together parallel with each other and at a distance apart.
An elastic buffer to prevent the front part of the holder from contact with the wall is attached to the spring member at the opening 18 as indicated in my said patents.
It will be understood that the slot 7 could be formed in the leg member and the pin 11 seated in the spring member, in which case the down-holding shoulder 9 would be formed at the upper partof the slot and the suspending shoulder would be formed at the lower part of the slot; but I prefer the construction shown because it lends itself to the special construction of spring which I have devised and to the making of the leg member with two side pieces between which the spring is embraced thus making the construction symmetrical and balanced as to the application of force from the spring to the leg member. Also this arrangement of the free end of the spring, in planes at right angles to the door may be such as to admit of the ready use of a screw driver to attach or remove the screw 6.
I prefer to insert the axle pin 13 through the roller 12 by means of a hole in the roller which is a little smaller than the diameter of the pin and will contract upon the latter. by reason of the elasticity of the rubber of the roller, so that, while the roller will be thus securely connected with the leg it may nevertheless be easily renewed by pushing out the pin and reinserting it through a new roller.
What I claim is 1. A door holder having in combination a spring member adapted to be attached to a door and the like so as to extend away therefrom, a swingable leg member having a footelement for engagement with the floor, and a slot and pin connection between said members, one of the members having the slot and the other having the pin, said slot having shoulders by one of which the leg member is held down and by the other of which the leg may be suspended above the floor.

A door holder having in combination a the leg maybe suspended with its foot above spring member adapted to be attached to a door and the like so as to extend away therefrom, a swingable leg member having a foot element for engagement with the floor, and a slot and pin connection between said members, one of the members having the slot and the other having the pin, said slot being substantially of S-shape and having shoulders by one of which the leg member is held down against the floor and by the other of which the leg may be suspended above the floor.

A door holder having in combination a spring member adapted to be attached to a door and the like so as to extend away therefrom, a swingable leg member having a foot element for engagement with the floor, and a slot and pin connection between said member, the spring member being provided with a stiffening element arranged parallel with the planes of the spring action and also having formed therein the slot and the leg member having the pin, said slot having a shoulder by which the leg member is held down against the floor.

A door holder having in combination a spring member adapted to be attached to a door and the like so as to extend away therefrom, anda depending, pivoted and swingable leg member having a roller foot element for engagement with the floor, said swingable leg member having means between which and the floor said roller is tightly clamped when the leg member is in holding position to hold the roller from rotat-ion, the roller being freely rotatable when the leg member is in trailing position.

A door holder having in combination a spring member adapted to be attached to a door and the like so as to extend away therefrom, a depending, pivoted and swingable leg member having a foot element consisting of a roller, means whereby the roller is rotatable and vertically movable'relative to the leg member, and means carried by theleg member whereby the roller is held from rotation when the roller is tightly held thereagainst by the resistance of the floor.

A door holder having in combination a spring member adapted to be attached to a door and the like so as to extend away therefrom, a swingable leg member having a foot element consisting of a roller, means whereby the roller is rotatable and vertically movable relative to the leg member, means carried by the leg member whereby the roller is held from rotation when the roller is tightly held thereagainstby the resistance of the floor, and a slot and pin connection between said members, one of the members having the slot and the other having the pin. said slot having shoulders by one of which the leg member is held down against the floor and by the other of which the floor.

A door holder having in combination a spring member adapted to be attached to a door and the like so as to extend away therefrom, a swingable leg member having a foot elementconsisting of a roller, means whereby the roller is rotatable and vertically movable relatively to the leg member, 111621119081118Cl by the leg member whereby the roller is held from rotation when the roller-is tightly held thereagainst by the resistance of the floor, and a slot and pin connection between said members,-one of the members having the slot of substantially S- shape and the other having the pin, said S-shape providing shoulders by one of which the leg member is held down againstthe floor and by the other of which the leg may be suspended with its foot above .the floor. e
8. In a door holder, thecombination of a swingable leg having two side pieces which are spaced apart, means for uniting said side pieces together at a point intermediate between their ends, a roller embraced between said side pieces' at one end ofthe leg, and a sustaining spring adapted to be attached to a door and embraced between said side pieces at the other end of said leg.
9. A door holder having in combination a spring member adapted to be secured to a door and the like, and swingably and pivotally connected therewith a leg member formed of a pair of side pieces embracing said spring member between their upper ends, a roller embraced between the lower ends, and a cross piece uniting said side pieces and serving as a stop to the rotation of the roller when the latter is compressed between the same and the floor.
10. A door holder having in combination a spring member adapted to be secured to a door and the like, and swingably connected therewith a leg member formed of a pair of side pieces embraced between the lower ends, and a cross piece uniting said side pieces and serving as a stop to the rotation of the roller when the latter is compressed between the same and the floor, said leg member being formed of a single piece of metal.

A door holder having a swingable leg, and a foot element consisting of a roller carried by the leg and rotatable and upwardly movable relative thereto, and a stop fixed on the leg and against which the roller is moved and pressed by the floor when said leg is in door-holding action, said roller rotating freely when the leg is in trailing position.
12. A door holder having a swinging foot element provided with a roller, and means for automatically holding the roller from rotation when the holder is in holding action.
13. A door holder device having a pivoted and freely swingable floor-engaging foot element "consisting of :aroller which is bodlily movable relative to said device, and means for automatically holding said roller from :rota t'ion when said device is in holding action.
