To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, LOUIS JENsnN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State oflllinols, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, of which the following is' a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to autographic registers, and has particular reference to the provision of a mechanism adapted for the feed and control of a summary slip or strip. A summary strip, asis understood by the usual definition of this term, is a strip fed through the register from a roll of paper and receives upon its face only the total amount of each individual sale and does not contain the itemized list of divers articles purchased, but only the total, and the strip 1 is not fed the full length of a ticket, but only sufficiently far enough to move the written amount forward a distance to clear the amount aperture in the cover plate of the register so as to receive the succeeding entry. The summary ticket is not necessarily discharged from the machine, but is,

The foregoing objects are accomplished in substantially the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings that show a typical or preferred embodiment of the invention.

Referring more particularly to Figure 1, of the drawings, it will be seen the register comprises a box having a base A, longitudinal side walls B, a proximate end wall C and a top plate or platen, the latter being formed in a plurality of sections D D and D seen in Fig. 1, the purpose whereof will hereinafter more fully appear. The remote end wall is in the form of a gate E suitably hinged at its lower edge to the box and secured in closed position by a latch F. Strips of paper-in the form of rolls G, G, having the usual sales forms printed thereon, are journaled in the opposite side walls, B, B, of the register and are threaded partly around rollers H and then pass over platen D, D D D below an apertured cover plate J that maintains the strip in flat condition. -The rollers H are journaled in the upper portion of the side Walls, and, as seen in Fig. 1, the side walls fare-divided along the line X so that the forward or remote portion, which is hinged to the base, or adjacent portion of the sidewall, may be raised for convenient access to the interior of the box when threading or adjusting the strips. Carbon or manifoldingsheets are interleaved in the usual manner between strips G Where they pass over the platen.
J ournaled in the movable portion of the side walls is a roll of, preferably, plain paper 10 (unprinted) that is threaded over a roller 12 disposed between the two rear sections D and D of the platen in the opening 13 therebetween, the strip passing over the intermediate sectionD of the platen and then downwardly through the slot 14 between platen sections D and D to its feeding mechanism. Secured to the underside of the platen section I) and extending downwardly obliquely therefrom is a guide 'plate '15 over which the summary strip 1() passes to direct the same to its feed mechanism and secured to and extending upwardly from the base A is a bowed or, segmental shaped Wall 16 that provides a guard and prevents the summary strips being discharged back into the other portion of the register.
J ournaled in opposite ends in the hinged side wall is a rock shaft 17 that has secured to it a substantially U-shaped frame, the ends of the arms of the U being secured to said shaft so as to be moved therewith when the latter is rocked. The U-shaped frame comprises a pair of spaced arms 18 that extend forwardly from rock shaft 17, and at their outer ends are connected by a cross piece 19 of angular section, as seen in Fig. 1; one ofthe flanges of the angle being vertically disposed and pendent so as to provide a cutting edge for the summary strip. Extending transversely across therock frame and journaled in the opposite arm 18 thereof is an idle shaft 20 having feed rollers 21 thereon arranged in spaced relation and co-acting with a driven feed roller 22 mounted upon a rotatable shaft23 the spindles whereof are journaled in the sidewalls of the register and actuated by the mechanism for feeding the summary strip that passes between rollers 21 and 22. The rocking frame is kept normally pressed toward roller 22 with the rollers 21 in contact there-. with by means of a coil contraction spring 24 secured at one end to the register wall,
and at its opposite end connected to a lateral finger 25 projecting from one of the parallel arms 18 of the frame. In order to release the pressure of rollers 21 against roller 22 there is provided a cam 26 in the form of a transverse shaft journaled at its ends in the register walls, and having a segmental portion flattened to permit rollers 21 and 22 to cont-act each other, and which, when rotated by a milled head Z onthe exterior of the register will lift the rocking frame to release the summary strip from between rollers 21 and 22. p
The mechanism for actuatingfeed roller 22 comprises the structure illustrated in detail in Figure 2 and 3 of the drawings, and which is disposed preferably upon the exterior of the forward portion of the left hand wall of the register and adjacent and co-ordinated with portions of the record strip feeding mechanism. This structure consists of alarge gear 27 journaled upon a stub 28 projecting laterally from the register side wall, and said gear has formed integral therewith a ratchet wheel 29. Loosely mounted upon the hub of gear 27 is a rotary reciprocatory arm 30 projecting radially therefrom, and which has pivotally mounted upon its outer end a pawl. 31 for engagement with 'the teeth of -ratchet wheel 29 and which is kept normally pressed into engagement with said teeth by a spring 32. A short link 33 operatively connects the outer end of arm 30 .with an intermediate portion of the actuating lever 34 that is pivotally connected at one end upon a pin 35 projecting from a convenient portion of the register wall B. The upper outer end of lever 34 is flattened horizontally to provide the finger rest 36 so that it may be conveniently depressed. The adjacent end of shaft 23 that carries the feed roller 22 of the summary strip extends through the adjacent side wall B of the register and has securely molinted thereon a gear 37 in mesh with gear 27 heretofore mentioned. It will be seen that upon depressing lever 34 the desired distance radial arm 30 will move about stub 28 as an axis and cause pawl 31 and ratchet 29 to rotate gear 27 a short distance, which in turn will move gear 37 and rotate shaft 23 upon which the feed roller for the summary strip is mounted. This movement will be enough to withdraw the summary strip a distance sufiieient to clear the next total to be written upon the succeeding ticket, but will not be suflicient to discharge the whole ticket. This movement also causes the settin of'the machine for the pur ose of disc arging the original and mani old ticket from the register by means of the mechanism now to be described.
As seen Fig. 2 operating lever 34 has a laterally bent portion adjacent pivot 35 and at this location it is pivotally connected to a link 38 that extends forwardly and has a pivotal connection with a rocking arm 39 secured upon the extended end of a rockshaft 40 that is journaled in the opposite walls of the register and extends beyond its bearings at each end. The lower edge of the rocking arm 39 has a in 41 that engages with a slot 42 in the a jacent portion or end of link 38 so as to provide a slight lost motion between the parts, as will hereinafter more fully appear. The depression of operating lever 34 will move link 38 in a longitudinal direction and thereby rock shaft 40 throughrocking arm 39.
The opposite end of rocker shaft 40 carries the arm 43; (Fig. 5) that is adapted to release the starter clutch mechanism for' feeding the sales-ticket from the register,

Mounted within a hood 44 extending transversely across the front end of the register is a solid feed roller 45 the trunnions of which extends beyond the roller and the trunnion at one end is provided with a gear 46 that is in mesh with a gear 47 carried upon the adjacent portion of a hollow shaft 48 that is journaled in the side wall (I of the register below and in vertical alinement with the trunnions of roller 45. Friction devices in the form of flanged sleeves 49 and 50 are secured to the hollow or tubular shaft 48 and contact the feed roller 45 which co-operates with the post-holes in the record strips to control the feeding operation. As seen, sleeves 49 and 50 are placed one on each side of the center of length of tubular shaft 48 and are each provided with corresponding circumferential spaced flanges 49 and 50 that are located so as to come into alinement with the post-holes in the record strips that are passed through the register, and when engaged through the post-holes with the co-acting portions of roller 45 the forward feed of the strips is stopped.
Near the center of tubular shaft 48. is a collar 51 and next to collar 51 is a starter annulus 52 that is exteriorly' serrated and provided with a conical bore so that in normal position the annulus is discharged from feedroller 45 and hangs loose and pendent upon the tubular shaft-48, because of the fact that the bore is of greater diameter than said shaft. On the adjacent portion of the shaft is mounted a cone 53 having an exterior that corresponds in angularity with the bore of annulus 52 and which is serrated in the manner shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. This cone is pressed upon tubular shaft 48 toward collar 51 by means of a coil spring 54surrounding the shaft between the base of the cone and the adjacent flange 50. The cone is adapted to rotate with tubular shaft 48 when it ,is actuated by means of a crank 55 upon its extended end, and the cone is connected by means of 'a transverse pin 56 that passes through a longitudinally elongated slot 57 in the tubular shaft, which pin extends through the adjacent portion ofa solid shaft 58 mounted within tubular shaft 48. This latter solid shaft 58 extends through the bore of the tubular shaft 48 and has its. outer end 59 screw threaded and when cone 53 engages annulus 52 so that it is concentric with tubular shaft 48 the screw threaded end 59 will project beyond the bearing in the register side wall and the annulus will be engaged with the periphery of feeding roller perforated 45 so that by rotating tubular shaft 48 the strips of paper between the annulus 52 and crank 55 will be fed so as to carry an unportion of the strips over flanges 49 and 5d.

er normal conditions the-face of rocking arm 48 next the register wall will be in the front of the adjacent end of solid shaft 58, and when the rocking arm has been raised by the rocking of shaft 40 through the medium of'the mechanism shown in Fig. 2 the recessed end of arm '48 will have been raised to clear the adjacent end of solid shaft 58 which is then projected in the manner shown at the left in Fig. 5 so that upon the lowering of arm 43 the threads will engage the threaded end 59 of the solid shaft. The rotation of the shaft by means of crank'55 will feed solid shaft 58 back into the tubular shaft 48 until the cone 53 disengages with annulus 52 which will occur when the threaded end of the solid shaft create a downward pressure of arm 43 against cam lever 62, the manipulation of which will lift the arnf when desired for certain purposes. The movement of rocking arm 48 and rocking shaft 40 also restores the operating lever 34* and its connected mechanism, including the pawl and ratchet, to their normal positions in elevated relation to operating crank 55 so that whenever the operating lever is depressed the summary strip will have been moved the desired distance and the starter mechanism will have been released so that the manifold strips a e again in form to be fed.
Mounted upon the end of the tubular shaft 8 that is farthest from the pinion 47 is ratchet sleeveS that is engaged by a pawl T which prevents the reverse rotation of the feeding mechanism, and in order to permit of the separation of'the latter mechanism from the upper roller 45 I have provided the bell-crank levers U that are loosely mounted, at the juncture of their arms, upon opposite end portions of the shaft 48 and have their upper obliquely disposed ends positioned below the spindles V of the roller 45. These levers may be rocked on their fulcrums by moving a rock-shaft W which extends from side to side of the register below the levers and has radial pins Z that act as cams. when theishaft is rotated to engage with the lower edges of the horizontal arms of the bell-crank lever to move the same. This will elevate the roller and thereby permit the paper strips to be inserted between said roller and the feeding mechanism below the same.
Claims:
1.. In an autographic register a platen across which a record strip and a summary strip are adapted to be moved, feed means including a starter mechanism for moving said record strip, a supplementary strip arranged between said record strip and platen, means for moving said supplementary strip independently of the movement of said record strip, and devices for operatively relating said starter mechanism with the moving means for said supplementary strip.
2. The combination with an autographic register having a supplementary, strip, of means for feeding said strip comprising feed rollers between which said strip passes, a gear train one of the gears thereof secured to the spindle of one of said rollers, a pawl and ratchet device operatively connected with another gear in said train, a depressible lever fulcrumed adjacent one end, and a link operatively connecting said pawl and ratchet devices with an intermediate portion of said lever.

In an autographic register a platen across which a record strip and a summary strip are adapted to be moved, means for feeding the record strip independently of the summary strip, initial feed devices coactable with the record strip prior to the operation of said means, mechanism for separately actuating the summary strip, and devices operatively connecting said mechanism with said initial feed devices whereby the latter are rendered operative during the operation of the former.
4. In an autographic register a platen across which a record strip and a summary strip are adapted to be moved, independent mechanisms for separately actuating said strips, one of said mechanisms including iniacross which a record strip and a summary strip are adapted to be moved, means for feeding the record strip independently of the summary'strip, initial feed devices that coact with the record strip prior to the actua-tion by said feeding means, and mechanism for separately feeding the summary strip consisting of feed rollers, a gear train one of which is secured to a roller spindle, a pawl and ratchet device operatively connected to a gear in said train, an operating lever, a link connecting said pawl and ratchet device to said lever, and devices operatively connecting said summary strip feed mechanism with said record strip initial feed devices whereby the latter are rendered operative during the operation of said lever.
6. In an autographic register a platen across which a record strip and a summary strip are adapted to be moved, means for feeding the record strip independently of the summary strip, initial feed devices coactable withthe recordstrip prior to; the operation of said means, separable feed rollers between which the summary strip is disposed, a pivoted frame which one of said rollers is journaled, means for actuating one of said rolleis, a pawl and ratchet mechanism coacting with the last-mentioned means, an.
operating lever, a link connecting said mechanism to said lever, and devices operatively connecting said summary strip feed elements to said record strip initial feed devices whereby the latter are rendered operative during the operation of said lever.
