Patented Nov. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES 1,560,223 PATENT oFF CE.
ADELBERT ENGLANDER, OF BROOKLYN, .NEW YORK.
VANITY CASE on THE LIKE.
Application filed March 12, 1925. Serial No 14,873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADELBERTENGLANDER, a citizen of Austria, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Vanity Case or the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a vanity case or the like and aims to provide certain improvements therein. More specifically it relates to a combined vanity case and sport handkerchief designed especially to be carried in the pocket of a womans garment so that when the vanity case rests in the bottom of the pocket the free edges of the handkerchief may protrude from the pocket for the purpose of personal adornment. Hence an object of the inventionis to provide a vanity case of such form as to be always conviently at hand while at the same time inconspicuous or camouflaged to the casual observer. Another object of the invention is to provide an article of the type described which may be conviently carried either in the hand or in the pocket of the garment without disclosing the character of the article while at the same time having the appearance of a sport handkerchief.
lVith the foregoing objects in view the invention preferably consists of a container in the nature of a purse or pocketbook hav ing compartments or provision for the reception and retention of such articles as are usually carried in a womans vanity case, the casing of the container being formed of a piece of fabric of greater area than the container with the edges of the fabric adapted to overhang the casing when held in up right position and to overhang the container frame when held in sidewise or inverted position. The invention also embodies other features of novelty which will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawings wherein I have shown certain preferred embodiments of my invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the vanity case of my invention in open position, a part thereof being broken away to show the exterior of the vanity case.
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the manner of using the vanity case as a means of personal adornment.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a modification.
Referring first to Figure l of the drawings, let A indicate the vanity case as a whole which as therein shown comprises a two-part frame B hinged at C and adapted for snap closing engagement by locking elements D. Secured to the frame B is a lining E of any suitable material which is provided with pockets or compartments adapted to receive and hold such articles as a lip stick container F, a rouge container G and a powder puff H, all of which may be of any preferred size or shape. The exterior casing of the container is provided by an interme diate or central portion I of a handkerchief or other fine fabric J which would be suitable for ornamental or adornment purposes. The portion of the handkerchief which constitutes the container casing may be secured to the frame B in any preferred manner such as by being clamped or adhesively attached thereto or by being directly attached to the lining E. Because of this manner of connection it will be obvious that when the container is either open or closed the greater portion of the handkerchief J including the edges thereof will overhang and drape itself about the container. It will be equally obvious that when the container is placed in the pocket K of a garment L as shown in Fig. 2 the edges of the handkerchief may protrude from said pocket as shown at M thereby adorning the garment and completely obscuring the vanity case.
In Fig. 8 I have shown the invention as applied to a vanity case N of the circular or disk type in which an intermediate or cen tral portion of the handkerchief constitutes the casing of the container.
l/Vhile I have shown and described two specific embodiments of my invention it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the modifications disclosed as various changes may be made therein with out departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A vanity case or the like, having a casing formed of a piece of fabric of greater area than said casing, and the edges of said fabric being adapted to overhang and envelop a substantial portion of said casing.
2. A vanity case comprising a purse or pocketbook frame or the like and a casing attached to said frame, said casing being formed of a piece of fabric of greater area than said casing and the free edges of said fabric being adapted to overhang and envelop a portion of the casing or the frame depending upon the position in which the case is held.
3. In combination, a vanity case and a display handkerchief, a portion .of said handkerchief constituting an exterior casing for the vanity case.
4. A vanity case or the like comprising a frame having a plurality of parts hinged together and a casing Supported by said frame, said casing being formed of a sport handkerchief or the like, a portion of said handkerchief intermediate the edges thereof being attached to the frame and the edges of casing of a latched container, said handker- 20 chief completely of the container.
