UNITED STATES PATENTY OFFICE.
HENRY J'. KASCH, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE KUBZ-KASCH COMPANY, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION 0F OHIO.
HOLDING rnnss.
Application led Hay 1,
To aZZ whom t may concern Be it known that I, lHENRY J. KAsoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inI Molding Presses, of which theifollowing is a speciication. l
This invention relates to molding presses, and more particularly r`to that type of press in which the plastic material is softened by heat before the pressing operation, and thereafter cooled to harden it after the molding operation has` been completed.
The rincipal object of my invention is to provide automatic means for drawing the knock-out pin plate outwardly or downwardly to effect the ejectinent of the finished product from the mold after the pressing operation is finished. Up to the present time it has been necessary to pry this plate down with a bar, which requires considerable time on the part of the operator and injures the plate. My improved means for doing this comprise pull-back plungers which become operable to pull down the plate when the platen starts its descent after the molding operation is completed.
It is another. object of my invention to construct the ram cylinder and pull-back cylinder on each side of the machine, from a single casting.
Other important and incidental objects will be brought out in the following specii'ication and particularly set forth in the subjoined claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional, side elevation of the molding press with the die open. Figure 2 is a sectional, side elevation of the same with the die closed. Figure 3 is a side elevation-of the press. Figure 4 is a cross sectional view of the die, showing the pin bars, the knockout pins and the knock-out pin plate. And
Figure 5 is a top plan view, partly in section, of the ram and pull-back cylinder castings, and supply lines.
Throughout the' specification and drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts.
Referrin to the accompan ing drawings for a detailed description o one form of embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a edestal base which supports a bed plate 2'. ounted upon the latter are 1222. Serial No. 557,537.
ltwo upright cylinder blocks 4, 4 that have been cast to provide wide base portions that .come to a taper at their inner ends. Projecting upwardly from the base portion of each block 4 is a ram cylinder 5 from whose wall there projects outwardly an upright wing portion 6 containing an elongated bore 7 y which receives a pull-back rod 8 having a plunger head 9. The cylindrical portion 5 of each block 4 contains an elongated bore 1Q to receive a reciprocating ram 11. By so castin each of the blocks 4.to provide a ram cy inder and a pull-back cylinder in it, economy of construction and eiciency in operation are obtained. (See Figures 1, 2 and 5.)
Mounted upon the rams 11, 11 is a platen 12 which supports a carrier block 13 for a steam-plate 14 whose top portion is recessed as shown in Figure 4 to receive moldpin bars 15, 15. Projecting inwardly from the latter are horizontal pins 15, 15 which engage the molded product from the side to assist in its ejection after the molding operation is completed. One type of product to which the press is particularly adapted is a flangedtelephone receiver which, after being molded, the pins 15, 15a elevate when the mold- pin bars 15, 15 are engaged by the product-ejection means hereinafter to be described. Between the moldin bars 15, 15 impression bars 16, 16 are isposed, the lower one being screwed to the steam-plate 14 and the upper one being screwed to a steam-plate 17 that depends from a carrier block 18 secured to a stationary platen or head 19. The latter has two laterally projecting wing or flange portions 20, 20 to which are bolted the` head parts of two downwardly depending push-back cylinders 21, 21 respectively. Projecting into the lower end of each one of these cylinders 21 lis a push-back plunger 22 whose lower end 2,1, 21 through riser pipes 24, 24 respectively.
(See Fi res 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.)
The uid for raising the rams 11,11 is K. delivered below them to the cylinderslO, 10y
'by branches 25, 25 of a pipe 26 towhichl iuid is admitted by a three-way valve 27 from a pipe 28 connected to a main supply line 29. (See Figure Also connected to the main supply line 1s a lateral pipe 30 from which the two risers 24, 24 project and to which there are also connected branch pipes 31, 31 that conduct the fluid to the top portions of the pull- back cylinders 7, 7 respectively. (See Fi ures 1 and 5.)
The lower part o the carrier block 13 is groovedv to receive a slotted pin plate 32 in such a manner thatl the latter may have an independent vertical movement with respect .to the said carrier block. Each pull-back .rod 8 projects upwardly through a bushing 33 in the top of its respective cylinder 7 and through a hole in one side of the platen 12, for connection to one side of the pin plate 32, whereby, when the molding operation is finished, the iiuid which enters the cylinder 7 will exert its ypressure against the plunger-head 9 topull the piny plate 32 downwardly.y (See Figures 1 and 2.)
Extending upwardly from, andfconnected to, the plate 32 isa series of knock-out pins 34 which, when the downward movement of the dplaten 12 is arrested, will engage the mol pin bars ,15, 15vto knock the molded Vproduct loose from the die. When the moldpin bars 15, 15 are so engaged, the horizontal pins 15a, 15a elevate the molded product -by their firm grip upon it from the side,
thus assisting in its ejection from the die. The descent of the platen 12 is arrested by the following means. AReferring to Figures 1 and 2, pins 35, one of which is shown in each of those figures, project 'downwardly from the middle portion of the pin plate 32, through holes in the platen 12, for engagement with a slotted plate 36 mounted on the top portions of the cylinder blocks 4, 4. When the lower ends of the pins strike this plate 36, the pin plate 32 will be held in a stationary position to cause the knock-out pins 34 to dislodge the molded articles as the platen 12 continuesitsI downward movement. f
The upper portion of the carrierblock 18 is grooved like the carrier block 13, to `receive a slotted pin plate 37 in such a manner that the latter may have an independent vertical movement with respect to the carrier block 18 and whose horizontal pins 15, 15a raise'thearticles after said bars are so engaged. Secured to each end of the plate 37 is the upper end of a rod 38 which projects downwardly. through ahole in the,
When the platen 12 again ascends,
40, 40 on the rods 38, 38 Figure 2.) The molded articles which are dislodged from the mold parts by the pin plates 32 and 37, are removed by the gloved hands of the operator after the press is opened for the discharge of them.
ln operation, when it Iis desired to raise the lower mold unit, the three-way lvalve 27 is turned to admit fluid to the pipe 26, from which it flows through the branch pipes 25, 25 to the cylinders elevate the rams 11, 11 within them. These rams in turn raise the plate 32, at which rial is inserted between the mold-pin bars l5, 15 and `the impression bars 16, 16. 'The platen -12 and the members mounted `on them are then raised to compress the plastic ma- 10, 10 respectively tol respectively. (See sol platen 12 to the pin point the plastic mate-V terial in the presence of the heat of the steam platen 12 to reach the pin plate 32 before i the die part which it carries can be lled with the plastic material. f y
After the plastic material has been molded, the three-way valve 27 is turned to permit the Huid to How out of the cylinders 10, 10, whereupon the platen 12 and the members carried by it are free to be pushed downwardly by the push- back plungers 22, 22. When the platen 12 startsl its descent, the pin plate 32 will be drawn downwardly by the ull- back rods 8, 8 until the pins 35 strike t e stationary plate 36d at which time the descent of the pin plate 32 will be arrested to cause the knock-out pins 34 which project upwardly therefrom, to dislod e the molded articles by engagement wit the mold-pin bars 15 between which the latter articles have been formed. These molded articles will be readily dislodged by the pins 34 because of the fact that after the platen 12 comes to the position where the downward movement of the pin plate 32 is arrested, it will continue its descenta sailicient distance to draw the lower impression bar 16 below the molded articles whose .downward movement is restrained by the hold the pin plate lirmly against the platen l2 until the die part which it carries is filled 'p with plastic material prior to another molding operation.
`I do not wish to be limited to the details of construction and arrangement herein shown and described, and any vchanges or modiications may be made therein within the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
l. In a 4device of the type described, the combination with a base, of a platenmow ably supported thereon, a lower mold-partcarried by said platen, an upper mold-part supported above the lower one, elevating means for raising said platen to bring the lower mold-part into enga-gement with the carried by said platen` an upper 'mold-part supported above the lower one, means for raising said platen to bring the lower moldpart. into engagement with the upper one, a knock-out pin plate adapted to be carried upwardly by said platen, and hydraulic means for pulling said knock-out pin plate downwardly when the platen starts its descent after the molding operation is completed.
