Description

F McCABE.
Pumps for Deep Wells.
Patented Oct. 13 I874.
Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK MOGABE, OF HILLSDALE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS FOR DEEP WELLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,961, dated October 13, 1874; application filed August 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK MGGABE, of
Hillsdale city, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps for Deep Wells, of which the following is a specifica tion The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of a pump, the peculiarities of which will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective View; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detached sections.
In the figures, 0 represents a platform at the top of the well; and Q one at the bottom of same. I I are two cylinders, which are cast in connection with a box or central waterchamber, J, between them. At the lower ends of the cylinders I l are the perforated bottoms P P, which rest upon the lower platform Q, and act as strainers for the water which passes into the cylinders. The waterchamber J is secured to the platform Q by means of the bolt 0. Cast into the water-chamber, and between the two cylinders, is a barrel, K, in which is cut a female screw. E represents the discharge-pipe, which is provided with a male screw on its lower end, which fits into the female screw in its barrel K. The cylinders II are provided, near their lower ends, with the valves M, and, just above these valves, with openings which lead into the water-chamber J. a to represent rods, which enter the cylinders at their upper ends, and which are provided with pistons L at their lower ends. The rods a a connect with two boxes, d d, at their upper ends, and to the upper ends of the boxes are connected the jointed piston-rods D D. B represents a lever, which is connected, by a pivot, to the ring or band S, said band surrounding the discharge-pipe E. This lever B is slotted at each end, said slots being marked X. Rollers T, within the boxes (1, play in the slots X of the lever, to avoid friction. N N represent a frame erected upon the platform C. Lying across this frame, at its upper end, is a crank-shaft. This shaft has two cranks, U U, to which are connected the jointed rods D D. A pinion, B, on this shaft, works into a gear-wheel, A, upon another shaft.
When the wheel A is revolved by a suitable crank, H, the pinion is revolved, and also its shaft. This gives motion to the two jointed rods D, and, as the cranks U U are on opposite sides of the shaft, an oscillating mot-ion is given to the lever B. Through this lever and the boxes d d the rods (1 a are moved up and down alternately in the cylinders. Water is drawn into said cylinders through valves M M, and is then forced into the water-chamber J, through the opening in it covered by the valve N and thence up the discharge-pipe E, and out at the nozzle G. On the top of the discharge-pipe E is an air-chamber, F.
By this arrangement and construction I make a substantial and easy-workin g, durable pump.
Having thus fully described my invention,
' what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The cylinders I I, with Water-chamber J cast between, and provided with strainers at lower ends, in combination with barrel K, dischargepipe E, oscillating lever B, audits connectingrods, constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 31st day of July, A. D. 1874.
- FRANK McOABE. Witnesses:
