To all whom t may concern.:
Be it knownv that I, HANS J. ZIMMERMANN, a citizen of Germany, and a resident of Philadelphia, inthe county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, h ave invented an Improvement in Heat-Exchange Apparatus, of which the' following is a specilication.
My-invention relates to heat exchange ap. paratus, particularly apparatus which is employed for effecting an interchange of heat between luids such, for instance, as steam, and liquids, where air is heated by -steam or liquids are cooled by air, etc.
The eliciency in operation of apparatus of this character is dependent upon various 'factors such as the velocity of flow of -the two media between which the interchange of temperature is being effected; the areaof the surfaces of the walls which/separate -the' two media;v the -length of the passageways through lwhich the media flow; and other factors whichneed not be mentioned.
In order that such apparatus shall operate elliciently itis necessary that the various' parts thereof shall be properly proportioned with respect to each other and with'respect to the work to be done which heretofore has necessitated the designing'of Special aplparatus 'for each installation to'meet. the special conditions involved-ineach case. The designing, 'building and installing of Such apparatus has involved relatively large exso that the said parts may be united and com- `bined to construct an apparatus of the size Aandcapacity desired -without the .necessity of designing and creating a new design ofa character to satisfy the conditions to be met thus 'avoiding expense and delay. By the provision of standardized parts tobe employed in theconstruction of heat exchange apparatus, manufacturers needing to employ suc-happaratus may keep in stock, or purchase as needed, the parts necessary to con-V struct apparatus of the-capacity required. -A further object of the invention is to provide constituent standardized parts which are adapted to` be employed in the construction of such apparatus of a character such that they may be readily assembled into a unitary structure.
A still further object is to provide an apparatus which may be composed of a plurality of units which may be readily assembled or disassembled if desired.
Without attempting at this' time to point out other objects and'advantages incident to my invention I shall now proceed to a detailed description thereof'in which refe-rence :will be made to the accompanying drawing in which one convenient form of embodi- `ment ofapparatus is depicted; b ut it will beunderstood that the invention is Susceptible of embodiment in other forms of construction than that shown and that changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing'from the scope of the said invention.

Each unit in the construction shown com- ,prisesl two series or rows 'of tubes 3 arranged in parallel and staggered relation with respect to each other as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The tubes 3 may be llili plain or they may be provided with-lateral as shown.

The opposite ends of"thejtubes 3 of the respective units project through openings 5 and. 6 into chambered terminal or head members 7 and 8.. The outer walls of these members are provided with openings 10 1n opposed relation to the openings `5 and 6 for the purpose of enabling the expanding and upsetting of the ends ofthe tubes '3 1n the openings 5 and 6 and withinthe chambers of the members 7 and 8 to thereby connect the `said .terminal or head members to the ends lof the tubes.4
The openings 10 are closed 'by screw threaded plugs 12.
For the purpose of strengthening the top' and IVbottomcwalls of the members 7 and 8 I Vhave provided the internally situatedoppositel disposed flanges 11 and for the purpose o further strengthening the outer walls of each of the said members and to provide means for contactingwith the top and bottom walls ,1 of the rectangular channely section I have provided external outwardly vI'irojectingiianges 15 which project beyond the heads of the plugs 12. The presence ofthe flanges 15 with their edges 1 in contact with the top and bottom walls 1 causes the fluid which may be flowing through the channel or conduit within which the appavratus is situated .to contact with the tubes `3 and the projecting langes'o'r gills thereon.`
'It will be assumed that inI the operation of the apparatus Ion'e vof the fluid media will be delivered through plpes 16 to the terminal or head members 7 from-which'. it*` will flow downwardly through theitubes 3 to the terminal or Vhead members 8 lfrom which it will be discharged through the dis-` charge pipes 17. f However, it will be understood that the passage of the said'fluid media through a unit or units may be in the oppor site direction.` The other media will flow simultaneously through the casing within which the said apparatus is situated transversely .of the tubes Band will conta f-t with the exterior surfaces thereof. In the construction as illustrated a number of heat exchange units are disclosed yas being disposed Las vwithin the casing and extending across the -samebut it will be understood that the number may be varied as desired. Each unit isof general rectangular lshape in outline andthe structure produced vby the combining of a plurality of such units is likewise of rectangular outline which permits the use of an inclosingl casing` of"rectangularv shape or outlinein cross section.
The terminal or head members 7 and-8 any desired capacitymaybe readily convstructed without thenecessity of specially designing the same.

In heat exchange apparatus, the combination of a plurality'ottbes, chambered terminalmembers secured lto the opposite ends of said tubes,v the said tubes communicating with the interiors `of .said members and the outer sidesl of said members being' and a conduit or-passage within'which the said heat exchangeapparatus is situated and with' the top and bottom walls of which the scribed. 3. In heat `exchange apparatus, the combination of a plurality of heat exchange units, each unit comprising a plurality of tubes, hollow terminal memberssecured to secure by Letters L. I
ends of said pockets being open and the iso the opposite ends of said tubes, inlet and outlet pipes,the inlet pipe being connected to one of said hollow terminal portions and the outlet pipe tothe other of said hollow terminal portions, and each terminal portion being provided with a pocket at its opposite ends, said pockets opening upon `the ends of said portions and the outer side walls-of which lare adapted to lie against the outer end portions of the adjacent walls of ad- `jacent terminal portions,'the said outer end portions being provided with screw bolts which are adapted to project through openings into the said pockets and -means for fastening the said screw bolts within said openings.

In heat exchange apparatus, the combination of a plurality of heat exchange units, each unit comprising a plurality of tubes arrangedin Arows in parallel relation with respect to each other and the tubes in one row being arranged in staggered relation with respect to those in the other, hollow terminal portions secured to the opposite ends of said tubes, inlet and outlet pipes communicating with the respective hollow terminal portionsof each unit and the outer side walls of each ,terminal portion being 4provided with outwardly extending flanges,V
each. hollow terminal portion being provided With a couple of pockets, one pocket at each end thereof, which pockets open upon the opposite ends of said portion and means upon an adjacent unit projecting into the said pockets and being secured therein lto thereby fasten the said units together,
and a conduit Within which the said apparatus is situated and with the upper and lower walls of which the said flanges contact, substantially as described.
5. A standardized terminal member for a heat exchange unit consisting of a hollow memberhaving a series 4of holes in one side thereof in which lthe ends of tubes are adapted tobe secured and the opposite ends of 45 HANS J. ZIMMERMANN.
