residing at Swampscott, in the county of Essex and 5 Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain Im rovements in the Art of Heel Attaching, 0 which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, hke

This invention relates to the art of heel attaching. In one aspect, the invention aims to provide a method ofproducmg a tlght 15 joint between the base and top sections of I a two-section heel. In .another aspect, the invention consists in an improved two-section heel having tightly jointed base and top sections.
According to the invention method is, provided which overcomes a dlfliculty some- I of' the attaching face of the heel section.
This shrinkage cannot be accurately predicted' nor exactly controlled because it varice with the composition of the compound of which the heel section is made, the shape of the heel section, and the characteristics of. the nail anchoring insert, when one is used. When such a heel section is attached to a heel base presenting-a flat surface an openin or crac tion 0 the top section and base. This shrinkage effect is particularly in some types of that class 0 rubber heels which have vulcanized into their attaching faces a stiffening or nail anchoring element of material which is harder than the body of the heel and is less in area than the attaching face of the heel. In respect to such rubber top sections the shrinkage of the rub ber sometimes produces a decided offset or depression in the breast end of the attaching face of the vulcanized heel section, and when the heel is attached a crack remains across the breast which it is impossible to close by any of the methods of heel attaching heretofore known.

From another viewpoint a composite heel is provided which inc udes a to section of vulcanized, resilient material wit a shrunken breast end, in combination with a base section having upon the breast end of its outer face a protuberant portion of sufiicientheight to fill the space at the breast end of the attaching face of the to section created by shrinkage. The particular heel top section ,16 herein illustrated is made of vulcanized rubber or equivalent, resilient material and has-vulcanized into its attaching face an element '18 of material which'is harder than the body of" the heel and less in area than the attaching face of the heel. The. element 18 may be made of wood or any other material suitable for anchoring the attachin nails, one of which is shown'at 20, and aii ing in the production' of a permanently tight joint around the edges of the heel.
Thebreast end of the top section 16 herein shown is shrunken to such an extent that the depression or space 14, in front of the element 18, is quite apparent and would create an unsightly crack or opening if the said top section were attached to an unprepared base haying a flat outer-face.
