I COLLAPSIBL-E BOX.
Application filedpNovembcr '1, 1924. Serial No. 747,147.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Crranifns A. Fox, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New fork city, county ofiIeWYOrk, and
State of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification. 1 I TlllS invention relates to improvementsin receptacles, and has particular reference-to a collapsible box similar to the type disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 745,273, filed October23, 1924. d
An object of thepresent invention is to provide an improved box of simpleand inexpensive construction wherein certain of the walls of one section of the box are reinforced when the box is in operative position by overlapping and interlocking a portion of an inner lining for said section with each of said walls.
Another object is to form a locking tongue in a portionof one wall of an inner reinforcing lining for a section of. the box, which tongue may be overlapped with an end of an adjacent wall of said section and then engaged with the latter wall to lock the lining in its reinforcing position.
The above and other objects will apptar more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawings I Figure 1 is a perspective view of a col lapsible box constructed in accordance with the invention, the box being shown open;
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the box;
- Figure 3 is a plan view of the box partially folded;
' Figure 4 is a perspective View of one corner of the box, showing the improved means for attaching the lining to a side wall of a section of the box; and c Figure 5 is a fragnintary top plan view, partly in section.
The present invention is shown in connection with a box commonly known as the telescoping type, but it is to be expressly understood that the drawings are used merely for the purpose of illustrating the invention as a whole and not to define the limits thereof, reference being had to the appended claims for this purposc.
The box proper is preferably formed from v a single sheet of suitable material, such as cardboard or the like, and which is cut to provide the bottom'and top sections 6 and 7," respectively, joined by an inter mediate section 8, which forms the outer rearwall of the box whin closed'position. 1
The bottom section 6 includesthe' front wall'9 and side walls 10, the front "ends of the same is I in which are overlapped with the ends of the front wall secured thereto by fasteners 11. Tl16lI1V6Il131011 further provides an inner lining for the bottom section, generally indicated by the numeral 12, and formedfrom a single length of material, the extremities of which are overlapped with the ends of the front wall 9 upon the inner surface thereof and likewise secured to the front wall by means of the fasteners 11. The lining is bent to provide the side walls 13 and .intermediate wall 14, the latter of which forms .the rear wall of the bottom section 6 when the lining is in extended position. The bottom edge of the intermediate wall 14 is provided with a flange 15 which engages the bottom of the section to lend rigidity to the wall 14 so as to prevent the inward collaps tongue 17 having a notch 18 adjacent its 1 free end to form a tab. 19 for a purpose which will presently appear. When. the lining 12 is being adjusted to its operative position the tongue 17 is extended around and overlapped with the rear end of the adjacent side wall 10 so that said rear end is interposed between the portion of the lining extending interiorly of said wall and the tongue 17. The side wall 10 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 20 into which the tab 19 is then inserted so as to lock the tongue 17 in position and thus maintain the lining 12 in its extended and reinforcing position with respect to the side walls of the bottom section.
The top section 7 is scored as indicated at 21, to permit of the side walls 22 thereof being collapsed and the front wall 23 folded thereupon and the material of said side walls is further provided with a fold 2st adjacent the intermediate section 8, which also permits of folding the top section when it is desired to collapse the box.
Vhat is claimed is:
1. In a collapsible box, a section including side walls, an inner lining for said section also including side walls, and a locking tongue for each of the latter side walls joined to its wall adjacent one end thereof, and capable of being extended around an end of an adjacent side wall of said section to engage said end between said tongue and adjacent portion of the lining to retain the latter in operative position.
2. Ina collapsible box, a section including side walls, an inner lining for said section also includin side walls, and a looking tongue for each of the latter side Walls joined to its wall adjacent one end thereof, and capable of being extended around an end of an adjacent side wall of said section to engage said end between said tongue and adjacent portion of the lining to retain the latter in operative position, said locking tongue having a portion projecting through the side wall of the section to retain the tongue in engagement with said side wall.
3. In a collapsible box, a section including side walls, a lining therefor also including side walls and an intermediate. wall forming the rear wall of said section, and a locking tongue out from each of the side walls of said lining with its inner end extending coincident with the line of connection between said wall and said intermediate wall, said tongue being capable of receiving the adjacent end of a side wall of said section between the same and the remaining portion of the side wall of said lining from which said tongue is cut, and the free end of said tongue being inserted through said side Wall of the section to retain the lining in operative position.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
