': Be it known that I, CLAUS V. HAL innne, ai'citizen of the United States, and a resident of Marion, in the county of Grant andState of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Lamp Supports, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description. The invention relates to article supports and more particularly to the type which includes a flexible suspension cord or element on which an incandescent electric lamp or any other article is secured. Y I g The object of the'inventioiris to provide a device which may readilybe fixed to a suspension cord to vary its operative length so that the'article sus ended thereon ma be readily raised or lowered to any desired height or position. 7 g

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this type which issimple in construction and which may be produced at a low cost.

The invention consists in the several novel featureshereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims-at the conclusion hereof.

In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the invention aflixed to a cord on which an electric incandescent lamp is suspended. Fig. is a vertical section of the invention. Fig. 3 a section on line 3-3 of .Fig. 2. Fig. 1- is a section on line 41 of Fig. 2.

The invention is exemplified in connection with a lamp cord of the usual construction which consists of a flexible wire cord 10 on one end of which a plug 8 is connected which is adapted to be secured in a socket 9 on a wall or ceiling, and on the other endof which a socket 12 issecured in which an electric incandescent lamp is disposed.

The invention comprises a device which may be readily aflixed to a lamp cord or the like and which consists of a casing, comprising a pair of stationary members 13 and M which are held in spaced relation to each other by a hub 15. Hub 15 is riveted at one end to disc13,'as at '16, and at the other end is rigidly secured to the easing member 14 by a screw 18. A rotatabledisc 19 is disposed between the casing members and is provided with an ouwardly extending flange 20 which forms a bearing between the disc and the hub 15. A cord 27 is wound around the drum, and one end thereof is secured to the drum by means ofulooping its end around an abutment 29 which projects from the flange 22. The other end'of the cord is adapted to extend through an annular guide '30- which 7 is aflixed to the outer periphery of'one' of the easing'members"and'is provided with a snap fastener 42', which is adapted to secure the free end'of cord 27 to the flexible cord 10.

A spiral spring is disposed betweenthe disc 19 and the casing member 14:, one end of which is secured to the inner periphery of'theflange 21 and the other to a slot 34 in hub 15. "Spring 33 is adapted to keep thedrum under spring tension so as to wind the cord thereon. To lock the rotatable drum in any desired position a ratchet wheel 36 is disposed between the casing member 13 and the disc 19 and is rigidly secured to the flange 20 to rotate with said disc. I A pawl 37 is pivotally secured to a stud 38 on casing member 13, and is adapted by gravity to engage the teeth of the ratchet and to hold the drum from rotating, When the cord 27 is to be lengthened, a slight pull upon it will release pawl 37 and by pulling the cordit may be unwound from the drum until the desired length is reached. When the drum ceases to rotate, pawl 37 will fall by gravity into a tooth in ratchet 36 and hold the drum from rotating. When the length of cord 27 is to be shortened, a slight pull upon the cord will disengage pawl 37 from the ratchet and by releasing the cord the spring will wind the cord upon the drum. When the desired lengthis reached the cord may be stopped and held long enough for the pawl to engage the ratchet. A clamp member 40 is rigidly secured to the casing member 14 and is adapted to be secured to a wire cord 10 by means of a screw 41.

In use, the device will be afiixed to asuspension element, such as a lamp cord or the like by means of a clamp 40, and the free end of the cord 27 will be secured to the suspension element by means of a snap fastener 42 in such a manner that there will be a large length of the element between the two fasteners. When it is desired t a y the ins operative length of the element so as to raise or lower the article suspended thereon it will only be necessary to exert a slight pull upon the cord 27 and adjust the length of the cord accordingly.
