The openings 28 are preferably slanted inwardly so that the water going therethrough will be forced toward the inner edge of the trap. A plurality of dividers 29 are mounted upon the trap 21 and extend upwardly therefrom, the inner edges of the dividers meeting at a point in substantially the center of the up per plane of the casing 22 so that the water being :forced toward the inner edge of the trap 21 will not flow over the top of the casing, but must fall downwardly thereinto.
One of the dividers 29 is preferably thicker than the other dividers as shown at 30, and has an opening 31 therethrough, the lower end of the opening being connected to an intake pipe 32, which is also connected to the source of water supply 14. A valve 33 is interposed in the line 32 intermediate the source of supply, and may be operated by turning the handle or knob thereof. A conical shield 34 is mounted upon the upper edge of the dividers 29 and 307 the base of the shield extending into the area of the trap 21 and below the outer end thereof. The upper end of the shield 34 has a downwardly extending opening 35 therethrough which opens into the upper end of the opening 31, and forming a continuous opening from the lower end of opening 31 to the apex of the shield 34. A second conical shield 36 having an inner opening 37 is mounted uponV the upper end of the shield 34. The inner side of the shield 36 deflects the water entering the opening 37 downwardly, the water passing through a plurality of openings 38 which extend through the bottom of the cone 36 adjacent the outer edge thereof.
At the upper end of the outer edge of the trap 21 there is provided an inwardly extending flange 39 for supporting the outer edge of a ring-shaped sieve or screen 40. The inner edge of the sieve 40 detachably rests upon the shield 34 at a point spaced upwardly from the lower edge thereof. The sieve is adapted to prevent large particles from entering the trap 21 or the casing 22, and is readilyrremoved for cleaning purposes.
In the operation of this device, the valv is preferablyturned on only slightly and gradually, permitting the water to flow through the pipe 33 and upwardly through the openings 31 and 3.5. Upon entering the opening 37 @the water is defiected downwardly through the openings 33 and fiows downwardly over the outer surface ofthe conical shield 34. YWhen the desired film of flowing water is attained on the surface of the shield 34 the valve 33 is left in the desired open position. The water flowing downwardly on the shield passes through the sieve 40 and drops into the trap 21. Upon filling up the trap 21 the water overflows at the inner edge thereof and into the casing 22, from whence it enters the sewer opening through the sewer pipe 25. As the upper edge of the casing 22 rises above the plane of the lower end of the shield 34, the trap 21 will always remain filled with water, and thus prevent any sewer gases from rising into the suspidor. It has been found desirable to occasionally give the interior of the cuspidor a thorough cleansing or flushing, and in order to accomplish this the handle of the valve 15 is pressed down wardly to permit the water to flow into the opening 13 in the base 12. The valve 15 is preferably opened fully so that the full pressure of the incoming water is carried into the opening 13. In passing around the opening 13 a portion of the water enters the openings 23 and forcibly throws the water in the trap 21 against the dividers 29 and 30 and from thence into the casing 22. rlhe main body of the water entering the opening 13, however, passes upwardly into the opening 16 and into the ring or shower 13,`
where it is sprayed downwardly against the inner side walls of the casing 11 and upon the shield 34. This cleansing or flushing process thoroughly cleans the inside of the cuspidor, and if any large articles have been caught by the sieve, they may be readily removed by lifting the sieve out and brushing or otherwise cleaning it.
It will be seen from the above that this device is sanitary in every respect, and for general appearances the component parts thereof may be coated with enamel or the like so that any foreign objects or matter will be readily disclosed.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of thc following claims:
