Be`l it known that I, MAXIMILIAN N. KOCH, acitizen ofV the' United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and Statey of New' York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification.
This-invention relates' to a cuspidor` which is'more particularly designed for' use inl public places, for instance, at the side of streets, in public parks and in buildings which are generally used by the public such as depots, municipalhalls &c.
It is the object ofv this invention to pro duce a cuspid'orl for this purpose which is simple in construction and" eiiicient in operation, which permits of effectivel fv depositing the sputum therein without liability of scattering the same outside of the cuspidor, which is strong and durable and not liable to be injure-d by rough' usage nor liableA to be clogged by foreign matter and which is effectively flushed by water so" as to maintain the external sputum'A receiving surfaces constantly clean and1 in a sanitary condition.

Figure 1 is avertical section of a cuspidor embodying the preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a. fragmentary vertical section', on an enlarged scale, of the apex of the defiector and adjacent parts forming parts of' my improvement. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, on an enlarged scale, of my improved cuspidor.

My improved cuspidor may be mounted in any suitable manner the means for this purpose shown in they drawings being an eX- ampleand comprising a hollow upright base or pedestal 1 which` is adapted to rest uponv the floor or pavement 2 to which it may be secured in any suitable manner and thereby permit a water pipe S'for ushing the cuspidor and` av drain pipe/1L for carrying oil' the waste matter from the cuspidor to be which door upon being removed permitsl authorized persons to gain access toA the handle- 5 within the pedestal which controls a valve 7 in the water pipe whereby the sup= ply of water to the cuspidor may be turned on or shut off when desired.
In its general organization my'improved cuspidor which surmounts this pedestal vcomprises a lower section 8 which isv preferably constructed in the form of a semi-'globular hollow bowl which has its concave or inner side facing upwardly, and any upper'sectilonor deflector 9 which is reduced from its lower end toward its upper end. The lower sectionor bowl is preferably formed inte'-V grally of cast metal withl the pedestal and is provided centrally' in its bottom with an upwardly projecting guard'. tube or collar 11 andV on one side of said guard tube with a drain opening 12 formed in a downwardly projecting nipple 18 arranged on the underL side of the bowl within thepedestal and connected with the upper end of the drain pipe 4 so as to communicate therewith. Adjacent to its upper1 edge' the bowl is provided internally with an annularupwardly facing shoulder or shelf 10 which preferably slopes inwardly, as shown in Fig. 1.
The upper section or deflector of thel cuspidor preferably comprises an upwardly tapering conical part 141, a lower cylindrical part 15 projecting downwardly from the lower edge of the conical part, a' plurality of laterally projecting supporting` lugs 16 arranged at the lower edge of the conical part, and a pocket 17 extending downwardly from the central part or apex of the deli'ector and opening upwardly t0 the upper surface of the latter. 1n the assembled posiionl of the deflector its cylindrical lower part is arranged within the upper part of the bowl' and its lugs rest on the shoulder 10 of the same so as to form an annular passage between the marginal part of the deflect'or and the marginal part of the bowl whereby the upper external surfaces of thel cuspidor are placed in communication with the interior thereof, and thev upper out-V wardly4 sloping. surface of the conical part of the deflector is arranged inline with the upper edge of the'bowl, as shown in Fig, 1.
rojecting upwardly from the' central part of the" bottom of the pocket'l? is a water outlet nipple 18 forming an annular space between the bore of this pocket and the periphery of this nipple. The latter may be secured to the bottom of this pocket in any suitable manner, for instance by means of a screw joint, as shown in Fig. 2. At its upper end this outlet nipple is closed preferably by means of a cap 2O which 1s arranged adjacent to and substantially in line with the top of the deflector. This cap may be Secured to the outlet nipple by means of a screw joint, as shown in Fig. 2, or by any other suitable means. In its side this outlet nipple is provided with one or more outlet openings 19 and at its lower end the same is connected with the upper end of the water supply pipe. 3 which latter extends upwardly through the guard colla-r ll in the bottom of the bowl.
Preparatory to putting this cuspidor in use the water supply is turned on with suiicient force to cause the water to iiow from the supply pipe 3 through the outlet nipple 18 and into the pocket 17 and then overflow from the top of the pocket in all directions in the form of a ring, thence over the upper conical surface of the deiiector in the form of a thin iilm or stream, thence downwardly through the annular passage between the defiector and the bowl, and thence through the outlet of the bowl into the drain pipe. The water is prevented from passing out through the bore of the guard collar 11 and into the base or pedestal by making this collar sufficiently high for this purpose.
The sputum is deposited upon the conical upper surface of the deflector from which it is washed downwardly into the annularl passageway and to the inner side of the bowl by the film of water flowing downwardly continuously from the elevated central part of the deflector to the depressed outer part thereof whereby the sputum is carried away to the drain pipe. By supplying the water at the apex of the defiector in the manner shown a continuous stream of water may be maintained for constantly ushing the deilector and bowl and at the same time reducing to a minimum the liability of clogging this water outlet by foreign mattei' such as cigar ends or the like. By projecting the detlector upwardly beyond the upper edge of the bowl any sputum which may be de livered against the same is not liable to be blown backwardly against the clothing of a person discharging the same in the event that a wind is blowing in a direction which otherwise might produce this result. Owing to the upwardly tapering form of the deector any foreign matter, such as newspapers, boxes or the like, are not likely to lodge on the detlector but will either fall ofi onto the ground or floor and thereby leave the deflector clear of obstructions and in condition for use. inasmuch as the upper conical surface or the defiector inclines or slopes on an angle which is in line with the Vupper edge of the bowl any hard foreign matter which may be thrown or deposited on the inclined surface of the delector will roll from the latter and owing to its meinentum pass outwardly beyond the upper edge of the bowl and to the ground instead of lodging in the annular passageway between the defiector and bowl, thereby reducing to a. minimum the possibility of clogging this passageway.
By screwing the cap 2O upwardly or downwardly on the outlet nipple 18 the flow of water from the pocket or basin 17 can be regulated so as to insure a uniform annular distribution of the water over the entire upper surface of the deiiector and cause thorough flushing of the same to remove any matter deposited thereon. f
It will be noted that owing to the advantageous construction of this cuspidor the same is not liable to become clogged, it is strong and durable' so as to withstand a considerable amount of misuse to which it may be subjected, the surfaces which receive the sputum are constantly maintained in a clean and sanitary conditionT and owing to the simplicity of its construction the same can be produced at comparatively low cost.
l claim as my invention:
l. A cuspidor comprising a bowl provided with an internal shoulder, and a deflector projecting above the bowl and provided :t its lower end with a plurality of lugs resting on said shoulder.
2. A cuspidor comprising an annular upwardly opening bowl provided adjacent to its upper edge with an annular internal upwardly facing shoulder, and a bowl having an upwardly tapering conical upper part which is arranged above the bowl and has its upper surface sloping in line with the upper edge of said bowl, a cylindrical lower part projecting from the large lower end of the conical part into the upper end of the bowl but separated therefrom by an inten veninir annular passage and supporting lugs arranged on the lower edge of said cylin drical part and engaging with the shoulder of the bowl.
3. A cuspidor comprising a bowl, an upwardly tapering deiector mounted on said bowl and provided at its apex with a pocket which opens at its upper end t0 the upper surface of said deliector, and means for supplying water to said pocket comprising an outlet nipple mounted on the bottom of said pocket and provided in its side with outlet openings.
