T0 aZZ whom it 151mg 001mm:
Be it known that LJQHN- H. Crrronow,
a citizen of the United States; residing at:
Cut Bank, in the county of Glacier and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I Fire-Box Doors and Deflector Plates, of which the following ,is a specification.- I
.Th-is Invention relates to improvementsn A further object of the invent-ion is to provide anapparatusof this character which has a detachable draft box mounted thereon, thereby permitting better control of the draft fed into the fire box.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character which is comparatively simple yet durable in construction and efficient for the purpose intended. 7
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be'apparent in the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved apparatus mounted on the front of a fire box,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same,
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional View.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5. denotes the front of a fire box which may be mounted upon any steam boiler, but is particularly adapted for use on locomotives. The front of the fire box 5 has an opening 6 formed therein for the purpose ofmounting a fire door generally denoted by the numeral 7 thereon. e
The fire door which is composed of a door frame 8 substantially oval in form and adapted to close the opening formed in the fire box is provided with a pair of extension hinged members 9 on one side thereof so positioned upon the door frame as to engage a pair of hinged supports 10 secured to the fire box and connected to are liingedhieinbets 9 y means or are tinge pins 11 thereby permitting the active be swtn'ig in a henziiital plane.
The basis plate or selector I2 is noun-tact on the ear or the door frame sand i'sringa 1y eonnetd thereto by means of a of extension pins, '13 formed on the extremities of nieu per sage, rotatably mounte within a pair, ofjsockets 14 starred to the The up er extremity of the bane frame. I plate 12 has an angular Bracket 15 for'ine d in theater-er theater, s erm 16 b ri formed near the upper edge to 51- an; ad justine'nt screw 17 to' be 'iflseifte'd therethrough, the "adj u s tiner'it sci ev'v threade'd'ly mounted through an inter illy threaded opening formed near the" upper extremity of the door name. As the bane pi ate 12 is re be swun about thepi'vot pins 13 I provide an annular collar 18 which is positioned upon the adjustable screw 17 on the inner side of the baffle plate thereby permitting the angular extension 15 to be moved inwardly.
The outer side of the door frame 8 has a pair of vertical flange strips 19 welded or otherwise secured thereon with a solidconnectirg strip 20 formed on the lower portion comprising a retaining frame for a draft box generally denoted by the numeral 21 which has a pair of flange members 22 formed on the sides thereof adapted to slide in suitable grooves formed by the flange strips 19. The front of the draft'box 21' is inclined toward the fire box at the upper extremity as denoted by the numeral 22, the rear being open and connecting with the front face of the door frame. The bottom 23 of the fire box is pivotally connected thereto by a pair of pivot pins formed on the extreme side adapted to engagesuitable openings formed in the sides of the box 21. As it is intended to lower the bottom 23 in order tosupply suflicient draft to the fire box I provide a hinged regulating rod 24 which is hingedly connected to a bracket 25 formed on the upper side of the bottom and provided with an opening to receive the angular extension upon the rod 24. The rod 2st is adapted to extend through an opening formed in the inclined front portion of the draft box and carries a collar 26, fitted about the rod, and retained in various positions thereon by means of a thumb screw 27 which is threadedly mounted in the collar 26 and engages the rod 2%, thereby enabling the bottom to be set at any angular position desired.
A conventional type of latch 28 is hingedly connected with the extremity of the door frame and is adapted to engage a suitable lug 29 formed on the fire-box front, permitting the door to be tightly closed.
In use, my improved door may be used with the draft box attached thereto if desired thus allowing the draft fed to the fire box to be controlled. It is also obvious that the baflie plate or deflector 12 may be regulated to any angular position desire-d to permit more complete combustion of the fuel. Vhen it is found desirable to remove the draft box 21 which may be readily accomplished as illustrated in the drawings, it is first necessary to remove the adjustment screw 17 in order that the draft box may be forced upwardly and removed from the retaining strip.
' It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from ing normally disposed over the opening in the panel and with its lower edge spaced above the lower edge of the opening,-the plate being provided at its upper portion with an offset bracket, and a screw passing through the door panel above the opening thereof and connected at its inner end with the offset bracket of the baffle plate, the outer end portion of the screw being dispose-d above the hood and above the ends of the guide flanges which retain the hood.
In testimony whereof, I have affixed my signature.
JOHN H. CHIDLOW.
