To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIS PENGILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Stockton, county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined C1ga rette and Cigar Lighters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates to improvements 1n cigarette and cigar lighting devices especially designed to be installed on automobile dashboards, and particularly represents an improvement over that general type of device shown in my copending 'appllcatlons for patent on a ci arette lighter, filed February 5th, 1923, erial No. 616,906, and on a cigar lighter, filed March 6th, 1923, Serial No. 623,212.

These devices are each provided with a fixed electric heating element, a suction cup alinedtherewith, and means for supporting and moving a cigarette or clgar into engagement-with the respect1ve cup and element, thereby lightmg the same.

The principal object of my present 1nvention is to provide a single heatin element for both a cigar and a cigarette lighting device of the above named character, and to mount and arrange said element in such a manner'that while allowin 1t t o be moved to have a definite and tixe position relative to either suction cup, it may bereposition and drawn toward the o rator without moving the device as a, w ole and without disconnecting the wiring to the element.

By means of this construction, not only may the element be used to light cigarettes or cigars su ported to the respectlve devices, but it may be employed instead of a match to light or relight a cigar or cigarette held in the mouth of the smoker at any reason' able distance from the device itself.

A furtherobject of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceed ngly effective for the purposes for WhlCh it is esigned.

These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as willfully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawin s, the numer al 1 denotes a plate having sid e ears 2 whereby it may be attached to a dashboard 3, and vertlcal end Walls 4 projecting outwardly from the side edges of the plate.

Fixed on and n'ojecting outwardly from one wall dis a sieeve 5 having a longitudinally movable valve 6 therein, these members forming part of the suction unit especially featured in my copending application for patent filed January 12th, 1924, Serial No. 685,883.

The other wall 1 is orificed as at 7 in alincment with the valve 5, the plate 1 having cigarette supporting members 8 between said walls 4 and arranged to support a cigarette in alinement with the valve and orifice 7.

A cigarette container 9 and dispensing means operated by a knob or handle 10, are mounted in connection with the plate 1 above the supports 8. These however form no part of the present invention, being particularly featured in my copending application for patent filed January 12th, 1924, Serial No. 685,884, the device as a whole comprising a cigarette lighter of the general type shown in application, Serial No. 616,906.

Positioned behind the dashboard 3 is an enclosed spring reel structure 11, any one of various designs to be found being suitable for my purpose.

The casing 11 of this structure has a bracket 12, arranged to be secured to the dashboard in common with certain of the ears 2 of the plate 1 by the screws or bolts 13 thereof, so as to hold said reel and plate in a definite relation to each other. The reel is positioned at the right hand side of the plate 1, or in a plane ad acent the orificed wall 4.

Secured on the dashboard and projecting therethrough in the horizontal plane of the axis of the orifice 7 is a sleeve 14, communicating with the interior of the reel-easing 11* and rigidly secured thereto.

on the dashboard, alongside the orifieed wall 4, is a vertical plate 15, held in definite relation to the dashboard and end wall by the sleeve 14, which projects through the lower end of: said vertical plate and has a head or flange 16 on its outer end hearing thereagainst.

Additional or other means may however be employed to hold the plate in place if desired. v

At the upper end of the plate 15 is a downwardly facing suction cup 17, having ,members 18 guided in tubes 19 carried by the plate and enabling vertical movement of said cup being had, one of said members being tubular and being connected to the same source of suction as is the valve 6.

The particular construction and adjustability of this suction cup however forms no part of the present invention.

Slidable 'in and removable from the sleeve-14 is a hollow stem 20 having at its outer end a head 21 and a handle member 22, the axial line of said head and handle being at right angles to that of the stem.

' -Mounted in the outer end of't he head inwardly of the rim or edge thereof is an elec- -tric heatin element 23, of suitable design, the lead wlres for which are in the form of a cable 24, extending'through the stem '20, and sleeve 14, and thence about the reel '11, the spring of the latter acting to keep the cable wound on said reel.

One outside wire 25 leads from a source of current to one of the cable wires through the reel structure in any suitable manner,

while the other wire 26 similarly connected to the cable, leads to a contact strip 27 mounted on and insulated from the plate 1,

\ said strip being arranged to be engaged by the valve 6 when the latter is moved toward the orifice 7, and forming with said valve the switch whereby the circuit to the element 23 is opened or closed.

In operation, the stem 20 of the heater unit is normally seated in the sleeve 14, the element 23 then facing either the orifice 7 and cup or valve 6, or the cup 17. The sleeve 14 is so disposed relative to the adjacent plate-wall 4 that the outer rim of the head 16 will snugly engage said-iwall, so that the head can then have no movement which mi ht cause annoying sounds with vibration, wh1le the plate 15 is curved the same as the head, so that the latter can have a snug fit therewith when turned to face upwardly.

When it is desired to light or relight a cigar or cigarette held in the mouth, the

smoker grasps the handle 22 and pulls the heating -unit away from the fixtures and up to the cigar, etc.,'the cable 24 unwinding from the reel. The same switch structure 6-27 is used to cause the element 23 to be heated as when said element is used in connection with the suction element, since while said suction is not now being used, the j unrestricted passage of air through the valves had when the latter is moved to close the switch, will do no harm. I have in mmd, however, to provide a switch to be mounted in the handle 22, should this be found desirable. I

When the cigar, etc., is sufliciently ignited,

the switch 'is thrown off, and the stem 20 of the heating unit returned to its normal seat in the sleeve 14, facing either the suction member 6 or the cup 17 as may be desired.

From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the objects of ,the invention as set forth herein.

While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I? I claim as new and useful and desire to Sc cure by Letters Patent is:

1. In combination, a cigarette lighting device having a suction member, and a heating element adapted to be placed in opposed alinement with'said member and to be removed from such position at will.

9. ln combination, a cigarette lighting device havin a suction member, an orificed wall provi ed with the device at the side thereof opposite to said suction member and facing the latter, a sleeve mounted in fixed relation to said wall and outwardly thereof, a heating element, a stem arranged in connection therewith and removably seated in the sleeve, and a head in which the element is mounted ada ted to then abut against the outer face of t e wall; the element facing the suction member through the wall-orifice.

10. In combination, a cigarette lighting device having a suction member, a heat element ada ted to be positioned in oppo dd alinement with said member, and to be withdrawn from such position at will, and guide means for ositivel causing the element to assumesai op position relative to the 4 suction member.

11. In a cigarette andcigar lighting device, a stem, and a heating e ement mounted in connection with the stem and facing in a direction at an angle to the axis of the stem. 12. In a cigarette and cigar lighting device, a stem, a head thereon positioned in a plane at an angle to the axis of the stem, and a heating element mounted in the outer face of the stem.

13. In combination, a-pair of suction cups disposed in spaced relation, and a heat' element adapted to be seated in oppose ah'nement with either cup. 14. In combination, a pair of suction cups disposed in spaced relation, and a heatin element adapted to be seated in opposed alinement with either cup, and to be withdrawn from said positions at will.
