gitudinal guide rod 37 fixed at its ends in the casing walls. The top wall of the casing 10 is formed with a longitudinal slot 38 through which project the upper endslof the levers 39 fulcrumed between their ends to the uprights 35, these levers having laterally turned pointer elements 40 yon theirl upper ends that are adapted to register with certain numbered marks 41 on the top of the casing, these marks having a spacing along the casing corresponding tofthat of the members 27. Ata short distance below its up- "per ends each upright 35 has set slidably Vstrips are formed with shallow vertical notches 47 in which the ends of the pins/42 are adapted to engage when the pointers 40 are in registry with the different marks 41 on the top wall of the casing.
It will be apparent that by moving these uprights 35 longitudinally in the casing the arms 34 on the shaft 33-may be brought into registry with selected ones of the members 27 so that rotary movement of the said shaft will cause the arms to engage the selected members and move the same into or out of neutral position. As here shown the members 27 are provided on their top sides with cam projections 27 that are engaged by the ends of the arms 33. To rotate the shaft 34 the latter has a bevel pinion 50 fixed on 4one end that is engaged by a bevel gear 5l on the lower end of a vertical shaft 52 mounted vin the rear end of the casing 10, the upper end of this shaft 52 projecting from the casing and having a knob 53 thereon for purposes of rotation.
To move the uprights along the casing we provide the following means. A pair of vertical shafts 55 and 56 respectively are mounted in the front and rear ends of the casing, the shaft 55 projecting at its upper end from the casing and having thereon a knob 57. These shafts have pulleys or drums 58 fixed thereon, around which a belt 59 is looped, this belt being of circular cross section, and passing through suitable apertures in the uprights 35. Fixed onthis belt is a spherical member 62 that is adapted to engage suitable displaceable devices mounted on the uprights 35 to move the latter along the casing 10. These displaceable devices are here formed by the lower ends of the levers 39, the levers being accommodated in vertical `grooves 63 in the uprights 35. At their lower ends these side of the casing and have flat levers or fingers 71 projecting upward therefrom.
These fingers 71 are moved into and out of engagement in transverse slots 72 in the members V27, by Vlongitudinal movement of theV bars 70. The longitudinal movement of the bars is effected by the bell crank levers 73 fulcrumed at the sides of the casing and engaging the bars 70 at one end and being connected at opposite ends to the lower ends of links74 that are connected at their upper ends to vertically shiftable straps 75.
The manner of operation of our improved device is as follows z-Assuming the shackle to be in locking position but with the combination not set and the members 27 also in neutral position. Knob 57 is rotated to causel the part 62 on the belt 59 to engage the ends of the levers 39 to move theuprights to selected position with the pointers 40 registering with certain of the marks 41. The knob 53 is then rotated, causing the shaft 34 to rock and the arms 43, which have been positioned in registry with certain of the members 27 to engage these members and move them to locking position. The knob 57 is then rotated to move the uprights 35 back to the rear end of the casing. As will be apparent, in order to release the shackle it willbe necessary to again set the uprghts 35 to the position previously occupied in order to bring the arms 34 into Operativerela'tion to the three members 27 that have been moved to locking position. To move the shackle 13 to releasing posiytion we may provide a cam 75 mounted in the lower end of a shaft 76 and adapted to bear on the crosspiece 12 when the shaft is rotated. The shaft 76 has a knob 77 on its upper end for rotation. 4
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows 1. In a Vcombination lock, a rectangular casing, a movable locking element having fixed thereto a pair of bars extending along the opposite sides ofthe casing, projections spaced along said bars, a series l of transversely movable plunger members adapted to be selectively moved to engage at their ends tively engage said plunger members to move certain ones thereof to operative position, said devices comprising a series of arms and a shaft on which said arms are slidably mounted.
3. In a combination lock, a rectangular casing, a movable locking element having fixed thereto a pair of bars extending along the opposite sides of the casing, projections spaced along said bars7 a series of transversely movable plunger members adapted to be selectively moved to engage at their ends between said projections to lock the said element, and devices adapted to selectivelyy engage said plunger members to move certain ones thereof to operative position, said devices comprising` a series of arms and a shaft on which said arms are slidably mounted, and means for moving said arms along said shaft. t
4. In a combination lock, a rectangular casing, a movable locking element having lixed thereto a pair of bars extending along the opposite sides of the casing, projections spaced along said bars, a series of transversely movable plunger members adapted to be selectively moved to engage at their ends between said projections to lock the said element, and devices adapted to selectively engage said plunger membersto move certain ones thereof to operative position, said devices comprising a series of arms and a shaft on which said arms are slidably mounted, and means for moving said arms along said shaft, comprising uprights straddling said arms, guiding means for said uprights, and a belt displaceably engaged with said uprights.
5. In a combination lock, a rectangular casing, a movable locking element having ixed thereto a pair of bars extending along the opposite sides of the casing, projections spaced along said bars, a series of transvcrselv movable plunger members adapted to be selectively moved toengage at their ends between said projections to lock the said element, and devices adapted to selectively engage said plungermembers to move certain ones thereof to operative position, said devices comprising a series of arms and a shaft on which said arms are slidably mounted, and means for moving said armsy along said shaft, comprising uprights straddling said arms, guiding means for said uprights, levers fulcrumed on said uprights, n
and a belt extending longitudinally of the casing and displaceably engaged with said levers.
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures;
JOHN GEMZA. CONSTANIY BALAZY.
