To all whmt may ao'wem:
Be it known that I, FR'EDRICH OLSEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Picatinny Arsenal, Dover, county of Morris, and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Shell Fillers, of which the following is a speoification.
The invention described herein may used by "the Government, or any of oficers' or employees in p'osecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without ayment to' me of any royalty thereon, in accordance p with the act of March 3, 1883.
'The subject of this invention is an explosive device,` for example, a projectile.
The main object of the invention is the provision of an explosive device suitable V for warfare, loaded' with a stable explosive possessijg requisite bursting force for use in highcxplosive shells.
With* the foregoin'g and other objects in View, my invention resides in the `Iovel arrangement and combination' of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the ivention.
In the aecbmpanying' 'drawing I have illustrated a high explos'ive shell containing a hursting charge' in accordance with my inventionr i Referr'mg'to the drawing, I provide a container, `herein shown' as a shell 1 having a cavity therein 'in which is placed guanidine picrate 2 and provided with the usual type use '3 for' initiating the explosion of t e guanidine picrate.
embodiment of' the invention lerein disclosed may be made -melting point,
I have found after ccnsiderable experinentation that guanidine picate may be loaded in shells or other containers and especially armor piercing shells and produce an explosive device possessing many desired characteristics, such w, safety in handling, insentiveness to Shock, stability, etc.
The guanidine pierate may be loaded into the shell directly or it maybe cast or extruded with a suitable binder, such as paraffin or T. N. T. or other material, either inert i or explosive, possessig a suitable melt'ing' oint or the liqu'fied substance carrying uanidine p'crate may be poured directly into the shell.. While an explosive device of excellent quality is produced by loading a I container in any of the waysi-heretofore de-- scribed I have found that desirable results are also obtained' by compressing the guanidine picrate to a density of not less than 1.50.
I claim:
1. A -filler for projectiles emb'odying guanidine picrate com'pressed to a density of i not less than 1.50.- i e 2. A filler for projectiles embodyinga charge compre'ssed to a density of not less than 1.50, said charge comprising guanidine pim-"at and a substancc possessing a lo'w said substance serving when melted as a vehicle for carrying the pic'ate in filling a shell and when solidified as a binder for the picrate.
3. A filler for projectiles embodyig charge compressed to a density of not, than 1.50, said charge' comp'rising guandne picrate, and a. substance possessing a low melting point whereby. the shell may he filled by casting or extrusicn.
