Be it known that I, FRANK H. THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Lasting Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to lasting machines and particularly to machines adapted for lasting shoes of the type having an outturned upper which lies upon the top face of the marginal portion of the sole, these shoes being commonly known as veldtschoen or stitch-down shoes.
It is an object of the invention to provide mechanism for lasting shoes of the type hereinbefore described which will be more efficient in operation than machines heretofore devised for such purpose and which can be operated more rapidly and with less manipulation of the work by the operator than can such prior machines.
An important feature of the invention resides in the provision of means for effect ing relative movement of an upper and a sole arranged to tension the upper about a last to locate the upper and the sole for the insertion of fastenings through the upper and into the edge face of the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the upper is gripped by means constructed and arranged to maintain the upper stationary after its engagement by the gripping means, and the means for effecting relative movement of the upper and the sole and thereby tensioning the upper comprises a pusher disposed for engagement with the outer face of the sole adjacent to the margin of the upper where it is engaged by the gripping means.
The invention further aims to provide means for supporting and guiding an up per during its introduction between the upper engaging surfaces of the gripping means, and, in the illustrated exemplification of the invention, such means is constituted by the pusher which effects relative movement of the upper and the sole, said pusher being further constructed and arranged to guide and support the margin of the upper during movement of the upper and the sole from one fastening inserting position to another.
A further novel feature of the invention resides in the provision of means associated with the gripping means for determining the disposition of the upper supporting and guiding means relatively to the upper and the edge face of the sole. Preferably also the upper supporting and guiding means is operated to effect relative movement of the upper and the sole by conmotions with the gripping means.
The invention further contemplates the provision of manually movable means for operating the means for effecting relative movement of the upper and the sole in combination with means controlled by the manually movable means for initiating the operation of the fastening inserting means. Preferably, and in the illustrated machine, the means for operating the gripping means and the pusher by Which relative movement of the upper and sole is effected comprises a latch adapted to be disengaged from the gripping means and the pusher subsequently to the insertion of a fastening by the faste-ninginserting means thus permitting the gripping means and the pusher to be returned quickly to their normal inoperative positions thereby facili' tating the introduction of the margin of an upper between the upper engaging surfaces of the gripping means or the movement of an upper and a sole from one fastening insorting position to another. The disengagement of the latch is effected by means rendered operative slightly before the insertion of a fastening to effect a preliminary movement of the latch relatively to the parts operated thereby of a character such that the gripping means and the pusher have no substantial movement during the insertion of the fastening.
Although the invention is herein described as particularly designed for the lasting of stitch-down shoes, nevertheless 1t 1s recognized that the invention and certam features thereof may have other uses,
including use in the lasting of shoes of other types. It ,is therefore intended that the scope of the invention shall be limited only as required by the claims.

In the illustrated exemplification of the invention, the machine frame comprises a standard 1 upon which isinou-nted a head 2 carrying a raceway 3 constructed to deliver tacks to thepassage 4 of a throat 6, after which the tacks are inserted into the work by a driver 8 reciprocable in the passage of the throat. 1

the ends of the stud shaft 30 are received in elongated slots 34 of thebracket extension 32 and said shaft is arranged for adjustment in the slots 34 by screws35 having heads 36 formed to facilitate the rotation of the screws to effectadjustment ofthe shaft. As shown, the heads36 of the screws 35 are provided with openings adapted to receive a suitable tool. The gripper lever 19 has a reawardly extending arm 38 to which movement is transmitted by mechanism hereinafter to be described to operate the movable gripper member 12, and depending ,,from said lever 19 is an armf40 from which movementis transmitted to the pusher 26 by a lever 42 pivoted on a stud shaft 44 carried by the bracket 33 and adjustable in elongated slots formed in the bracket by screws 46 in. order that, the relation of the sole B to the passage 4 of the throat 6- may be varied to compensate for different thicknesses of the sole in such a manner that a tack may be inserted in the center of the edge face of the sole regardless of variations in the thicknesses of the soles being operated on. To the end that the amount of relative movement of the upper A and sole B may be regulated, a pin and slot connectionis provided between the arm 40 of the lever 19 and the lever 42. As shown, such connection comprises an elongated slot 48 in the arm 40 which receives a pin 50 positioned in a slot in lever 42 and upon which is threaded a turn butten 52 by which the pin 50 may be secured in any desired position of adjustment relatively to the slot 48. Vi ith this construction, it is evident that by manipulation of the screws 46, the position of the sole B relatively to the passage 4 of the throat 6 may be changed without afiecting the extent of the relative movement of the upper A and sole B, whereas the extent of relative movement of the upper A and sole B can be changed through the instrumentality of the pin and slot connection 48, 50 without materially affecting the relation of the sole B to the throat.
The gripper lever 19 is provided with a screw 54 which adjustably determines the position of the pusher 26 relatively to the edge of the sole B and to the margin of the upper A by engagement with an enlarged portion 56 of the pusher 26 which is formed to provide a screw contacting surface so disposed as to permit movement of the pusher relatively to the screw 54 without materially changing the spaced relation of the pusher to the edge face of the sole B and the margin of the upper A. The pusher 26 will be engaged by the screw; 54 upon movement of the gripper member 12 toward the fixed gripper member 10 and will be moved toward the edge of the sole B, the extent of said movement depending upon the position of adjustment of the screw 54 in the arm 18 of the gripper lever 19.
As shown, the gripper lever 19 and the pusher 26 are operated by depression of a controller illustrated as a treadle 58 normally held upwardly by a spring 59 and connected to a rod 60 which in turn is joined to an arm 62 loosely pivoted on the stud shaft 30. The arm 62 has pivoted thereto at 64 a latch 66 normally urged by a spring 68 connected to the latch and to the arm 62 in a direction to engage the rear end of the arm 38 of the lever 19, the movement of the latch 66 by the spring 68 being limited by a lug 70 on the latch arranged for engagement with the lower surface of the arm 62. It is desirable, in order to facilitate the rapid operation of the machine, that the gripper member 12 and pusher 26, after the insertion of a tack, should be returned to inoperative position quickly to permit a piece of work to be removed from the ma chine and another substituted therefor or to allow the same piece of work to be moved without loss of time from one tack inserting sion 32 of the bracket 33.

To this end, means are provided for disconnecting the latch 66 from the arm 38 of the lever 19, thus permitting the parts tobe returned to inoperative position substantially instantaneously regardless of the speed at which the treadleis allowed to moveupwardly by the operator. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, such means comprises a screw 71 threaded into a bracket 33 and having a. head 72 adapted to be engaged by a lateral extension 74 onthe latch 66. With this construction, it is apparent that when the arm 62 and the latch 66 are sufficiently depressed by actuation of the t-readle 58, the hooked end of the latch 66 will be moved out of engagement with the arm 38 of the lever 19 by A the coaction of the arm 74 of the latch with the head 72 on the screw7 1. In order to return the gripper member 12 and the pusher 26 to their normal inoperative positions after the release of said members by the latch 66, I provide a spring 76 connected at one end to a lug 78 depending from the pusher 26 and at its other end to the exten- The movable gripper member 12 and the pusher 26 are normally maintained by the spring 76 in the positions shown in Fig. 2 with the lever 42 in engagement with the extension 32 of the bracket 33 and the lug 7 8 contacting with the lever 42, the smooth upper surfaces 27 of the pusher 26 being disposed between the planes of the upper engaging surfaces of the gripper members 10 and 12.
The treadle 58 is also connected by a rod 80 to a bell crank lever 82 having a hooked end for engagement with a trip-off device 84 carried by a lever'86 and adapted to operate a member 88 controlling the clutch governing the operation of the tack inserting means. A more complete description of the fastening inserting means and the clutch mechanism for controlling said means is deemed unnecessary since such mechanism per se constitutesno part of the present invention. For a full description of said mechanism reference may be had to the pat out to Mackenzie No. 1,106,393 granted August 11, 1914.
In the use of the machine for lasting a stitch-clown shoe, a sole attached to a last with its marginal edge projecting from the side of the last and an upper are assembled with the margin of the upper eX-- tending beyond the face of the sole, and the margin of the upper is introduced between the upper engaging surfaces of the gripper members 10, 12, being guided into position between said surfaces and supported thercbetween by the smooth upper surfaces 27 of the pusher 26. The operator then depresses the treadle 58 and through the latch 66 operates the movable gripper member 12 and the pusher 26. The gripper tive 3 positions.
member 12 engages the margin of the upper 58 causes the spring 20 controlling the gripper member 12 to be compressed and thereby enables the margin of the upper A to be effectively gripped between the gripper member 10 and the movable gripper member '12 during endwise operation of the pusher 26 to move the sole B relatively to the upper A and to locate the sole in position to receive tacks from the throat passage I. When the treadle 58 is sufiiciently depressed, the la'tch'66 is disconnected from the gripper lever 19 and consequently from the movable gripper member 12 and the pusher 26=byengagement of the extension 7 1 of the latch with the head 72 of the screv 71. When the gripper lever 19 is released by the latch 66, the gripper member 12 and the .pusher 26 are withdrawn to their normal inoperative positions by the spring 76, the action of which is transmitted to the lever 19 by the lever 12 and the pin and slot connection 18, 50. Consequently, the downward movement of the gripper member 12-is limited by the engagement of the lever 42 with the bracket extension 32. 'Before the latch 66 is disconnected from the gripper lever 19, the member 84 is tripped to initiate'the operation of the tack inserting means so as to cause a tack to be inserted through the upper and sole prior to the withdrawal of the-gripper member 12 and thepusher 26 totheir inopera- Preferably, however, although the latch 6'6'is not actually discon- -nected from the gripper lever 19'untilafter the tack hasbee'n inserted,the extension 74 of the latch 66-e'ngages-the head 72 of the screw 71 slightly previous to the driving of -thetack, the resultant preliminary movementof the latch'66 relatively to the gripper lever 19 causing the gripper lever 19 andthe pusher 26 to remain substantially stationary whilethe tack is being driven.
In the operation of the machine, lasting tac-ks are inserted through the margin of the upper A and into the edge face of the sole B at regular spaced intervals and by reason of the relative disposition of the pusher-26 to the gripper members 10 and 12 when in work receiving position, the pusher 26 operates during movement of the upper-and sole from one tack inserting position to another to guide and support the margin of the upper, the recess '28 in the throat extension or fixed gri per member 10 permitting theupper and sole to be'moved from one tack inserting position to another without necessitating lowering the'work or moving it away from the pusher-and gripper members.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a machine for lasting shoes, fastening inserting means comprising a throat formed to permit movement of a partially driven fastening laterally thereof and a driver, and means for effecting relative movement of an upper and a sole constructed and arranged to locate the sole in position for the insertion of a fastening through the upper and into the edge face of the sole.
2'. In a machine for lasting shoes, fastening inserting means including a throat having a lateral opening to permit movement of apartially inserted fastening laterally of the throat, means for gripping the margin of an upper, and means for effecting relative movement of a sole and the gripping'means constructed and arranged to locate the sole in aposition for the insertion of fastenings through the uppe and into the edge face of the sole.
3. In a machine for lasting shoes, fastening inserting means, means for gripping the margin of an upper, and a pusher operable on a sole to effect relative movement of the sole and upper to locate the upper and sole relatively to the fastening inserting means for the insertion of a fastening through the upper and into the edge face of the sole.
4. In a machine for lasting shoes, the
combination of a pusher movable to effect -relat1ve movement of an upper and a sole constructed and arranged to locate the upper and sole lnposltion for the insertion of (a fastening through the upper and into the edge face of the sole, fastening inserting means, means for ad ust1ng the pusher to vary the path of movement thereof, and
means for varying the extent of the relaand a sole constructed and arranged to move the sole to a posltion to receive a fastening, and means. for inserting a fastening through the margin of the upper and. intoftheedge face .of the sole.
6. In a machinefor lasting shoes, means for gripping the margin of an upper, means operable onfthe outer face of-a sole to effect i relative movement of the sole and upper, and
a throat and driver for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the edge face of the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole, said throat being formed to permit movement of a partially driven fastening laterally thereof.
7. Ina machine for lasting shoes, means for gripping the margin of, an upper, a pusher operable on the outer face of a sole adjacent to the upper and movable to effect relative movement of the sole and upper,
and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the edge face of the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.
8. In a machine for lasting shoes, means for gripping an upper, means for moving a sole in a plane substantially parallel to the margin of the upper where it is engaged by the gripping means, and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the edge face of the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.
9. In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping an upper constructed and arranged to remain stationary after the engagement of the upper by the gripping means, means for moving a sole relatively to the upper, and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the edge face of the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.
10. In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping the margin of an upper constructed and arranged to remain stationary after the engagement of the upper by the gripping means, means disposed for engagement with a sole adjacent to the upper where it is engaged by the gripping means to move the sole relatively to the upper, and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the edge face of the sole to secure the upper in lastedrelation to the sole.
11. In a machine for lasting shoes, the
" combination of a throat formed to present a substantially plane surface, means for gripping the margin of an upper against said surface, means disposed for engagement with a sole adjacent to the upper Where it is en gaged by the gripping means to move the sole relatively to the upper, and means for driving a fastening through said throat and into the upper and sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means operable on a sole to effect relative movement of an upper and a sole, means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the soleto secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole; and means for adjustably determining the position of the moving means relatively to the edge face of the sole. 14. In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping the margin of an upper, means for effecting relative movement of said upper and a sole in a direction substantially perpendicular to the surface of the sole, and means operable substantially parallel to the surface of the sole for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping an upper constructed and arranged toremain stationary after the engagement of the upper by the gripping means. meansdisposed for engagement with a sole adjacent to the upper for effecting relative movement of the sole and upper, and means operable substantially at right angles to the gripping surfaces of the gripping means for inserting a fastening" throughthe upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.
16. In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of upperengaging means which are relatively movable to grip an upper, means operated by the upper engaging means and disposed for engagement with the outer face of the sole for effecting relative movement of the upper and a soleto tension the upper, and means for insertinga fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole,

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of a throat formed to present a plane horizontal surface, a member for griping the margin of an upper against the plane surface of the throat, means operable on the outer surface of a sole adjacent to the upper where it is engaged by the gripper member to effect relative movement of the upper and the sole, means carried by the gripper member for shifting said moving means toward the upper and the edge of the sole, and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of a throat formed topresenta planehorizontalsurface, a member for gripping the margin of an upper against the plane surface of the throat, means for effecting relative movement of the upper and a sole, means for lowering the gripper member and the moving means away from the plane surface of-the throat,means for discontinuing such movement of the moving means at a point above the lowermost limit of movement of the gripper member to enable the moving means to guide and support the margin of the upper during its introduction between the upper engaging surface of the gripper member and the'plane surface of the throat and means for insert ing a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.

In a machine for-lasting shoes, grippers for seizing the margin of an upper means for causing relative movement of the upper and a sole in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the sole, means for inserting fastenings through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole, and means for supporting the margin of the upper when released by the grippers.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping the margin of an upper, means constructed and an ranged for engagement with the outer face of a sole to effect relative movement of the upper and the sole, means for'inserting afastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole, and a single controller movable by the operator to operate the moving means and subsequently to initiate the operation of'the fastening inserting means.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for inserting fastenings through the upper and into the edge face of the sole of a shoe to be lasted, means for initiating the operation of the fastening inserting means, and means operable by. the means for initiating the operation of the fastening inserting means to effectrelative movement offan upper and a' sole, and to :locate, the upper and sole in position to receive a fastening from the fastening inserting means;

In a machine for-lastingshoes, the combination of means for effecting relative movement of an upper and a sole, means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole, means for operating the moving means comprising a latch, and means for disconnecting the latch from the moving means to permit themovling means to be returned quickly to normal position.

combination of means for grippmg the man gin of an upper including an arm, means movable longitudinally of said arm for effecting relative movement of the upper and a sole, and a driver arranged approximately at right angles to said arm for inserting fastening-s through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping the man gin of an upper including an arm, means movable longitudinally of said arm for ef fecting relative movement of the upper and a sole, means carried by said arm for adjusting said moving means toward and from the edge of the sole, and means for inserting fastenings through the upper and into the soleto secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping the margin of an upper comprising an arm and a gripper member mount-ed on the arm, means operated by the gripping means for effecting relative movement of the upper and a sole, a yielding connection between said member and said arm to permit the continued operation of the moving means subsequent to the engagement of the upper by the gripper member, and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the solerto secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping the margin of an upper comprising an arm and a gripper member mounted on thearm, means operate-d by the gripping means and constructed and arranged for engagement with the outer surface of the sole to effect relative movement of the upper and a sole, a yielding connection between said member and said arm to permit the continued operation of the moving means subsequent to the engagement of the upper by the gripper member, and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping the margin of an upper comprising an arm and a gripper member yieldingly mounted on said arm, means operated by the gripping means for effecting relative movement of the upper and a sole, means carried by said arm for supporting the moving means, and means for inserting a fastening through theupper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.
56.In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping the margin of an upper comprising a three-armed lever, agripper member carried by one arm of said lever, means co-acting with another arm of said lever to operate the lever and the gripper member, means actuated by the third arm of said lever for effecting relative movement of the upper and a sole, and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.
57. In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping the margin of an upper comprising a lever, a gripper member carried by one arm of said lever, means for operating said lever, means for effecting relative movement of the upper and a sole, lever connections between the first-mentioned lever and the moving means for operating the moving means, and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.
58. In a machine of the class described,
a throat member having a driver passage therethrough, and a driver arranged for re-,
ciprocation in said passage for driving a fastening partially through the throat, said throat member having its parts of a rigid and unyielding construction and being formed and arranged to permit free movement of the partially driven fastening laterally of the throat.

means for driving a fastening partially into an upper and a sole, means for supporting the margin of the upper during move ment of the upper and the sole from one fastening inserting position to another, and a throat through which the fastening is partially driven constructed and arranged to permit movement of the fastening laterally of the throat thereby to facilitate the movement of the upper and sole from one fastening inserting position to a second fastening inserting position.

In a macl'i-ine' of the class described, a throat, means for driving a fastening partially through the throat and into an upper and a sole, said throat being formed to permit movement of the partially driven fastening laterally of the throat to facilitate movement of the upper and the sole from one fastening inserting position to another, and means co acting with said throat to effect relative movement of an upper and a sole constructed and arrai-iged to support the margin of the upper during movement of the upper and sole from one fastening inserting "position to a second fastening inserting position.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of grippers for seizing the margin of an upper, a pusher operable on a sole to effect relative anoveinent of the upper and the sole, a driver for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole, and an adjusting device associated with-the grippers for positioning the pusher relatively to the edge face of the sole.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of grippers for seizing an upper constructed and arranged to remain stationary after the engagement of the upper thereby, a pusher disposed foren'gagement with a sole adjacent to the upper for effecting relative movement o'f'the sole and upper, and a driver "operable substantially at right angles to the gripping surfaces of the grippers for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation'to theso'le.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combinationof grippers for seizing an upper, a pusher operated by one of the grippers and disposed for engagement With the outer face'of a sole to effect relative movement of the sole and upper, and a driver for inserting a fastening into the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.
6%.In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of grippers for seizin'gthe margin of an upper, a pusher for effecting relative movement of a sole and the upper, a driver for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole, and means associated with the grippers for adjustably determining the disposition of the pusher relatively to the sole and upper, said means being arranged to permit movement of the pusher relatively to the grippers.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for gripping the margin of an upper, comprising gripping members, a pusher for effecting relative movement of the upper and the sole, operatingv means for the gripping means and the pusher constructed and arranged to locate said pusher when the gripping members are open in a position to guide the upper in its introduction between the gripping members, and a driver for inserting fa'stenings through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lastedrelation to the sole.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of a throat formed to present a plane horizontal surface, alever for grip= ping the margin of an upper against the plane surface of the throat, a pusher operable on the outer face of a sole adjacent to the upper Where it is engagedby'the lever to efiect relative movement of the upper and thesole, an adjusting device carried by the lever for shifting said pusher relatively to the upper and the sole, and a driver for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the'soleto secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.

In a machine for lasting shoes, gripping members for seizing the mar in of an upper between which members t e upper remains during the interval between their gripping operations, a driver for inserting fasten-ings through the'sole and upper to secure the upper-in-lasted relation to the sole, and a support for sustaining the margin of the upper between the gripping members when released thereby and during passage of the upper from one gripping position to another.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combination of means for effecting relative movement-of 111 HPPI and a sole, a driver for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole, and means for operating the moving means, including a latch arranged to be disconnected from -the moving means to permit the moving means to be returned'quickly to normal position.

In a machine for lasting shoes, the combinationofmeans for gripping an upper constructed and arranged to remain stationary after engagement of the upper by the gripping means, means for moving asole relatively to the upper, and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole comprising a driver and a throat having an opening to permit movement of a partially driven fastening laterally of the throat.

In a. machine for lasting shoes, upper gripping means, guiding means for the upper While it is in the gripping means in ungripped condition, means for operating said guiding means to effect relative upper tensioning movement of the gripping means and the shoe While the upper is gripped, and means for securing the upper tothe shoe sole While under tension.
71. In a machine for lasting shoes, the
combination of upper gripping members relatively movable to grip an upper, means operated by said movement of one of the grip nin members to effect relative movement between the gripping members and a sole,
and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.
In a machine combination of upper gripplng members, mechanism for relatively operating said members to grip an upper, means disposed for engagement with the outer face of the sole, means operated by said mechanism for effecting relative movement between the gripping members and the sole engaging means, and means for inserting a fastening through the upper and into the sole to secure the upper in lasted relation to the sole.
