To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY A. RAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Perforating Machines, of which the f0llowing is a specification.
This invention relates to paper perforating machines, and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine in the form of an attachment, adapted to be used in conjunction with a piano, organ, or other keyed instrument for perforating music sheet paper, adapted to be used upon automatic pianos.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a machine of the character stated, means for accurately recording the playing of the performer, in exact coincidence with the depression of the keys of the instrument when the music is played upon the automatic piano.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the paper perforating machine.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View of the same.
Figure 4: is a fragmentary perspective view thereof.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary Side elevation of a piano key action, indicating the manner in which the perforating machine is connected with the key.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the perforating machine comprises a frame 1, having a shaft 1 journalled thereon. A counter-balance wheel 2 is mounted upon the shaft 1. Guides 3 are mounted upon the vertical sides of the frame 1. A bar lis disposed transversely of the frame 1, and may move vertically thereon. Vertically disposed punch bars 5, are slidably carried by the bar A. Each bar 5 is provided at one side with a notch 5. Latch strips 6 are mounted for horizontal movement, in the bar 4:, and are disposed at right angles to the rods 5. The latches 6 may en ter the notches 5 of the rods 5. A wire 6" is connected at one end with each of the latch strips 6, and is trained around cylindrical guide rods 7' and connected with a coil spring 8. The spring 8 is connected with a rocker 9, and a wire 10" connects the rocker with the key 11' of the instrument. Eccentrics 8 are mounted upon the end portions of the shaft 1 and eccentric bands 12 pass around the peripheries of the eccentrics and are operatively connected with the end portions of the bar A. The bars 5 are pointed at their lower ends, as at 13', and the lower portions pass through a guide 9, which is disposed transversely across the frame 1. Springs 10 are secured by clamp bars 11, which extend transversely across the frame 1, and the inner ends of the springs 10 are connected with the punch bars 5. The springs are iuider tension, with a tendency to normally hold the upper ends of the bars 5, in contact with the lower edge of a stop strip 12, which extends transversely across the frame 1. Springs13 are connected at their lower ends with the latches 6, and at their upper ends with a cross bar 14', and the said springs serve to move the ends of the bars 6 out of engagement with the notches 5, in the sides of the bars 5. Guides 1 1 are mounted upon the floor of the frame 1 at the opposite sides of the paper receiving heads thereof. The paper compressing rollers 16 are journalled at the receiving edge of-the frame 1. Compression rollers 16 are journalled at the intermediate portion of the frame 1,
and bear against the upper surface of the strip of paper, and hold the same in position over a guide plate 17, which extends transversely across the frame 1. Feed roll-' ers 18 are journalled at the opposite edge of the frame 1, from that edge at which the rollers 15 are journalled, and the strip of paper passes between the said feed rollers. A shaft 19 is operatively connected, at one end, with the shaft 1, and is operatively connected at its other end with the shaft of one of the rollers 18. The operating connection between the shaft 19 and the shaft 1' and the shaft of the roller, are in the form of the usual worm and worm wheel gears.
The shaft 1 is rotated continuously by a belt, which is passed around the belt pulley 7, mounted upon the said shaft. Through the operative connection of the eccentric 8 and the eccentric bands 9, the bar 4 is re ciprocated vertically between the guides 3. At the same time, rotary movement is transmitted from the shaft 1'," through the shaft 19, to one of the rollers 18 and the strip of paper, which is passed betweenthe said rollers 18 is moved longitudinally across the frame 1 and the guide pulley 17. \Vhen the piano key 11 is depressed,-thewire =10:-is moved longitudinally, whereby the rocker 9' is swung and the wire 6' is movedlongitudinally and around the rod 7, whereby the connected bar (5 is moved longitudinally against the tension of the attached spring 13, and the end of the rod 6 enters the notch 5 of one of the punch bars'5. Thus, the said punchbar is fiXGCl-Wlth relation to the bar i,- and the pointed end; 13 is projected through the strip of paper'producing a perforation therein. The same action takes place, when all-of the succeeding keys '11 are struck or depressed, and'thus the necessary perforations are-provided in' the strip or 'sheet of paper. When 'the'key- 11 raises, the wires "IO-and 6' are .move'dviin an opposite direction, w vhereby the spring withdrawsthe bar'G from the notch 5 of the punch bar 5,'and= tl'IG'SPUlIIgS 10 raise the punch-bar 5, until its upper end comes in contact withthe stop 12.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1, A paper perforating machine, comprising'zrframe, a guide platemounted thereon, means for guiding astripof paper across the guide plate, a bar movablymounted uponthe'frame above the guide plate, means for reciprocating said bar vertically a punch bar mo vably mounted in the fir'st mention-ed bar, spring-means for normally holding-the punch in an elevated; 1 13osit-ion,a spring pressed bar mountedi'iorgmovement transversely or the first mentionedban and adapted to'engage the punch banand means operatively connecting the spring pressed bar, with the ,key of an instrument.
