IMPROVEMENT lN RElN-BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,834.. dated Oct ber 7 application fil September 14,1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS E. HAYNES, of Boston, Sufl'olk county, Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Rein-Holder, of which the following is a specification:
This invention embraces an appliance for the reins of horses harness, whereby a firm hold may be maintained by the driver, and slipping of the reins through his hands prevented; and the invention consists, in the main, of two hemispherical globular or crowning disks or buttons, one of which is formed with a male screw, to enter a corresponding female screw created in the opposite button, and by means of which the two are drawn forcibly together, and so as to tightly inclose the rein between them, a central spur being formed upon one button, to extend partially into a concentric chamber formed in the opposite one, by means of which a bend is created in the rein, which prevents slipping of it be tween the two disks, and the latter remain fi'rml y in the position in which they are placed.
The drawings accompanying this specification represent, in Figure 1, an elevation, and, in Fig. 2, a section, of my rein-holder, Figs. 3 and 4 being elevations of the male button or disk, to be hereinafter explained.
In these drawings, A and B represent two hemispherical disks or buttons, which maybe composed of wood, metal, or other suitable substance, one of these buttons, viz., A, being formed with an internal concentric channel, C, which is provided with a peripheral screw-thread, D, While the opposite button, B, is formed with a male screw, 0., to enter the female screw D, and enable the two buttons to be drawn tightly together. The button A is formed with a central spur or teat, b, which protrudes somewhat into a shallow pocket, 0, created in the button B, the purpose of this spur, as before premised, being to divert the rein E from a straight line and increase the hold of the two buttons upon it. A channel, F, is cut across the face of the button B, of such a width and depth as to be filled by the rein, the button A screwing down upon the said button B and the rein with a close finished joint.
This device may be applied expeditiously to a rein, and has no injurious effect upon it. It can be furnished at small cost, is very durable, and answers admirably the purpose intended.
By the employment of the spur b and recess 0, in connection with the channel F, I am enabled to obtain a firm gripe upon a rein without the necessity of punching a hole in it, or otherwise preparing it for reception of my holder, which would be necessary if two buttons were employed which were simply pro vided with a screw, attached to one and screwing into the other.
I claim A rein-holder composed of two hemispherical or equivalently-shaped buttons, screwing to gether, and provided with a rein-passage, c, as described, the one button being provided with a spur or teat, b, projecting into a recess or depression in the other button, as shown and specified.
