Description

.5. RAPHAEL LOCKING DEVICE Filed Aug. 14, 1923 A WIIIIIIIIIIIIL INVENTOR Sglvesfer Raphael ATTORNEY Patented Get. 20, 1925.
UNITED STATES. eArENroFF B .SYLVESTER RAPHAEL, OF BROOKLYN, NEWYORK, ASSIGNOR TO w YORK,I\T. Y;
SYLVIA RAPHAEL,
LOCKING DEVICE.
Application filed Augustl l, 1923. Serial No. 657,321.
To all what/2 it 977.64g concerns Belt known that SYLVESTER RAPHAEL, cltizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of Kings and 5 State of New York, has invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locking devices.
()ne object thereof is to provide a clip or fasteningdevice of the character described with a snaplock adapted to lock the clip in fastening or holding position against the papersor articles held or sealed thereby, so as to prevent opening of the'clip exoeptby breaking the lock.
A further object thereof is to provide a device of the character described'which shall be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, and quick, efficient and sure inoperation to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out; y The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described and of which the scope of 2 application will beindicated in the follow nig claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of the various possible illustrative embodiments of thisv invention,
Fig. 1' is a perspective View of a clip or fastener; embodying this invention showing the parts inopeii or unlockedposition;
Fig. Bis a cross-sectional view showing the clip in locked position in use for holding papers together; and
Fig. 3 is a developed view showing the blank from which the clip is made before the same has been bent into the finished clip shown in Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the snap lock clip or fastener embodying the invention there shown is seen to comprise a body portion 10, comprising a substantially V-shaped member, the space 11 between the sides 10 and 10 of the V serving to receive the papers 12 or the like articles which are held securely between the legs 10 and 10 when the clip is in locked position. Extending from one of the legs of the V, such as 10 is the female portion 13 of the snap lock, and extending from the other leg of the V, such as 10*, and disposed in operative relation to the female portion is the male portion 14. The femaleportion comprises an enlarged base member 13* which may be circular or otherwise suitably shaped, but of sufiicient size so as to-pro ride a substantial rear support for the papers or other articles held together by the clip. This base member 13 is preferably continuous and in the same planewith the leg 10 from which it extends; A central slit 1.3 is cut in the base and the material of the base is further slit at each end of the slit 13 at right angles thereto as at 13, 13 and again parallel to the slit13 and'extencb ing towards the periphery of the base, as at 13 13, thus providing a pair of cut out resilient tabs 15, 15'..
The n'iale member comprises a head portion l4: preferably integralwith an.d'down turnedi from the leg l0 substantially at right anglesthereto. This headmember is suitably shaped for easy entrance into the slit 13? in the female member. In the form shown in the drawing, the head" is arrow shaped but other suitable shapes may, of course, be employed; Thetop portion 14 of the head member 14 is wider than the leg member 10 and the head member is nicked or cut away on either side as at 14 and 14, ad acent the top, thus providing recesses for the tabs 15, 15. The width of the head member adjacent the nicked portions is somewhat greater than the length 5'.
ofthe slit- 13 'so that as the male member is forced into the female member through the slot 13 the resilient tabs 15, 15 are first bent downward and then snapped back into the recesses 1-12 14:, thus locking the male member to the female member.
It will be clear that once the two parts have become looked in this manner, it is impossible to pull them apart by reason. of the tabs 15, 15 binding against the walls of the recesses 14, 14..
The clip is preferably made in one piece from resilient sheet material from a blank such as shown in Fig. 3, which is folded about the line 16 to provide the legs 10" and 1O and down about the line 17 to dispose the male member in operative relation to the female member. The blank may be out to proper shape and formed with. the slits all in one operation thus affording a very cheap and simple method of manufacture. It will thus be seen that there is provided "a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A fastening device of the character described including a female member having an opening, a resilient member disposed to either side of the opening, a male member having a head relatively larger than said opening adapted to enter therein and means on the male member for engaging said resilient member to permanently interlock the male and female members.
2. A fastening device of the character described including a female member having an opening, a resilient member disposed to either side of said opening and a male member having a head adapted to enter into said opening, said head being of greater width than the length of said opening, and having a reduced portion for effecting a permanent interlockment between the male and female member when said male member is forced into said opening.
3. A fastening device of the character described including a female member having an opening, a resilient member disposed to either side of said opening, and a male member having a head adapted to enter said opening said head being of greater Width than 'the length of said opening whereby said resilient members are depressed when said male member is forced into said opening, and means on said head member for engaging said resilient members to permanently interlock the male and fema e members.
4. A fastening device of the character described including a female member having an opening, a resilient member disposed to either side of said opening, a male member having a head adapted to enter said opening said head being of greater width than the length of said opening whereby said resilient members are depressed When said male member is forced into said opening, and recesses in said head to receive said resilient members for permanently interlocking the male and female members.
5. A fastening device of the character described comprising a body portion of resilient material, a female member at one end of said body portion, and a male member having a reduced section at the other end of said body portion in operative relation to said female member, said female member.
having a slit, said male member having a head of greater width than the length of the slit in said female member, and resilient tabs cut out from the body of the female member adjacent each end of said slit adapted to engage said reduced section of the male member for permanently interlocking said members.
6. A fastening device of the character described comprising a body portion or resilient material, a female member at one end of said body portion, a male member at the other end of said body portion in operative relation to said female member, said female member having a slit therein to receive said male member, and resilient tabs cut out from the body of the female member adjacent each end of said slit, said male mem ber having a head portion of greater width than the length of the slit adapted to enter the latter and depress saidresilient member, said male member having recesses therein to receive said resilient members for permanently interlocking said members.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
SYLVESTER RAPHAEL.
