H. LANGER ADJUSTMENT FOR CARBURETOR CHOKES File d Nov. 23 1922 Patented. G st. 192.5.
UNITED STATES HARRY LANGER. OF MILEVAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
ADJUSTMENT FOR CAEIBURETOR CHOKES.
Application filed November 23, 1922.
To all "whom it may concern.
Be it known that l. HARRY liaisons, a citizen of the l.=nited States, and resident of lililwaukec. in the county of lililwaukee and State 0* iii? I live invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjust ments for Carburoior Ghokes; and I do hereby declare that the following a full. clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to an adjustment for controlling a carburetor choke.
it comprises a notched arm, spring actuated to retain a bell crank lever at diil'erent positions of adjustment.
Heretofore when it has been desired to maintain the air intake valve at a particular position called for by the fact that the engine is cold, or by other features of operation, difliculty has been experienced because of the tendency of the valve to open by reason oi spring action.
The object 01 the present invention is to obviate this di'fi'iculty by providing means for retaining the intake valve at desired positions of adjustment. The hand may be removed entirely from the primer rod and the attachment operates to maintain the parts in definitely determinable relation. Hitherto even when the air valve was manually controlled, results wcre not satisfactory. Hit were determined that the engine would operate at a particular adjustment of the valve, there would be no way of de tcrmining subsequently what that position of adjustment was, as no indicator was provided and there was no means of telling when the gate was in the position previously found desirable for the conditions of operation. With applicants device, however, the air valve may be regulated for particular conditions of operation, and thereafter the previous position of operation may be readily ascertained and the valve may be regulated to correspond. A retainer arm is provided having a plurality of notches and the valve is regulated by merely shifting a bell crank lever with the primer rod until the lever is received in the proper notch.
An object of the invention is the provision of an adjustment device simple in construction, made of a minimum of parts, convenient in operation and of such nature a.
Serial No. 802,792.
to require substantially no alteration of standard parts.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts s'aiibstantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the heroin di closed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation in side elevation showing the novel attachment and cooperating parts.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
The carburetor 10 has an air intake 11 thereon controlled by valve 12, operable by bell crank lever 13 to one arm of which is pivoted primer rod 14 and to the other arm of which is secured link 15 extending to the arm of bell crank 16, pivoted on bracket 17, the other arm of bell crank 16 being pivoted to primer rod 18 projecting thru an opening in the dash and having a knob 19 on the end. When the engine is cold and under certain conditions of operation, it is desir able to retract rod 14 or rod 18 in order to restrict the intake of air. It is desirable also at times to continuously run the engine with a restricted air intake, as when the engine is cold. As the tendency of spring 20 which immediately controls the operation of valve 12 is to return the Valve to open position, applicant provides means for retaining the valve at definitely determinable points. An adjusting arm 21 is provided, pivoted at 22 to support 23. The adjusting arm is substantially sigmoidal in shape and curves outwardly into a substantially quadrantal upper portion having a series of spaced notches 24 therein. The arm is made of a narrow metallic band provided with a longitudinal flange 25. A. spring 26 is secured to the upper end of the arm and urges the Q raaaoee arm towards fixed rod 27. On the movement of rod 18 or rod 1a in any direction bell crank as is moved and the lower arm thereof rides along the notched edge of retainer arm 21, the lower arm having a-laterally directed edge adapted to be received in the notch. hen the hand of the operator is removed from knob 19, the bell crank lever m remains in fined position, the retainer arm operating to prevent movement thereof under influence of spring 20. Valve 12 may he therefore adjusted by proper movement of rod 14- or rod 18, and on proper adjustment, the position of the valve is determined. the operator being enabled to remove his hand. Thus the engine may be permitted to operate continuously under themost satisfactory conditions of operation. the mixture of fuel being accurately determined.
Thedevice is conveniently operated, call ing merely for the movement of the primer rod to proper position. After the primer rod has been adjusted to a particular position. this position may be subsequently ascertained again readily as the operator in moving th e priiner rod can feel the movement of the bell crank 16 over the notches. The operator may adjust the rod in such manner tha t the arm of bell crank 16 is received in the Eirsi, second, third or any desired notch.
Claim:
in an automobile the combination of a choke valve for a carburetor, a lever operatively connected thereto, a dashboard, a bell crank lever pivotally supported upon said dashboard and having;- a downwardly and outwardly extending arm connected by means of a link with said first mentioned lever, a pull rod connected to the other arm of said bell crank lever, a retainer having a curved portion provided with a serrated edge \vith the srlions formed by graduailv curviiu portions, said retainer havinga straight portion pivoted to said dashboard, and a spring connecied to the free end of said retainer and rocking said retainer about the pivot point to cause the notched edge thereof to engage the downwardly and forwardly extending: arm of the bell crank lever.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto in hand at Milwaukee. in the county of l'iilivaukee and rate o'l' li'isconsin.
