Description

'J. a. NICDLAY. Spring-BoardBuggies. 'No.155,809. P atented0c t.13,1874.'
NITED STATES JOHN G. NIOOLAY, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
I IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING-BOARD BUGGdES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,809, datrd O tober 13, 1874; application filed August 14, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. NICOLAY, of Vashington, District of Columbia, have invented a Carriage or Buggy, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to improve and perfect spring-board buggies, in which one or more elastic boards form at once the springs, bed, and coupling.
As at present made and used, the boards extend only from axle-tree to axle-tree, upon which and the'rocker-the ends are directly laid.
In my invention, however, the boards extend over and beyond the axle-tree, thus accomplishin g a material shortening of the gear: ing, with great advantage in draft, turning, &c., with boards of the same length, at the same time retaining the entire benefit of the spring or vibration of the whole length of the boards.
To effect this I lay the boards A upon the balance-frame B, which said balance-frame is firmly fastened by suitable bolts and braces upon the axle-tree. tends any desired distance both behind and before the axle-tree, and may be made of such width and form as the size of the buggy and taste may dictate. This balance-frame, having the axles for its pivots, yields and moves with the spring or vibrations of the boards, and the seat or seats may be placed near the middle or most elastic points of the boards.
A balance-frame upon the hind axle-tree Will generally be suflicient; but, if desired, one may also be used with the front axle-tree by fastening it upon the rocker.
I claim as my invention.
The combination of the balance-frame B with the spring-board A and axle-trees, substantially as described.
JNO. G. NIOOLAY.
The balance-frame eX-
