Re it lmoivn that. I. STANLEY B. UnnaNowrrz, a citizen of the United States., residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented a neiv and useful Improvement in Machines for Attaching String Fasteners to Envelopes, of which the following' is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved machine for attaching string 4fasteners to envelopes of the class in which a string' is secured either to the body or flap of an envelope and provided with receiving devices such as a disk or Washer on the other portion of the envelope. My invention relates to providingan improved means for feeding the string to and through vthe disk or Washer forming a part of the means for fastening the string to one part of the envelope as distinguished from machines which feed the stru to or around the eyelet commonly employedl as a part `of the string securing means. By my invention l provide a member movable between the punch and die used to set the eyelet and away from said position after feeding the string to permit the punch and die to operate. The movable member referred to, Which preferably is in the form of an oscillatory arm, carries devices adjacent the string` delivery end of the movable n'ien'iber for positively feeding the string from the movable member and through a perforation in the strip of material from which the retaining Washer or disk is subsequently punched, after which the end of the string projecting through said perforation is engaged by a gripper for holding the end of the string in the perforation While the movable member begins its movement away from the path of the punch and die used to set the eyelet. The gripper retains the end of the string but momentarily Vand then simultaneously with a delay in the movement of the movable member away from the punch and die, the gripper opens to permit the punch to engage the string in the perforation, to force an eyelet through the perforation clamping the string betweenfthe eyelet and the yWasher blank and punch the Washer from `the Washer strip after which the punch carries the Washer and eyelet and the engaged .end of the string to the envelope and forces the eyelet through the envelope and preferably through a reinforcing Washer or disk on thel other side of the envelope against the die cooperating With the punch to set the eyelet 4and fasten the Washers and string securely tothe envelope. The movable `member preferably carries a pivoted delivery device or nozzle Which, at the end'of'the motion ot said member to its string delivering positions is turned by the latter part of said motion to enter the die cooperating` with the punch to cut the eyelet Washer' from the Washer strip, to thus present the end of the string` directly to the perforation in the washer strip before the feedingof the string begun. This insures positive opera-tion of the mechanisn'i and the positive directing of the string to a position to be engaged by the gripper. .By my invention I also prdvidc operating mechanism to properlytime the movement of the several `parts referred to and I provide devices to cooperate in the handling of the eyelets and Washers as will best be understood by reference to the detailed descriptionbelow of themaehine. I prefer to provide in my machine complete perforating and punching mechanism for not only attaching the string and string retaining Washer and eyelet to the envelope as described but also at the same time to secure to the other portion of the. envelope by means of an eyelet. a similarly formed Washer to receive the loose end ot the string When it is desired to close the envelope by means of the string. After the string` is securely engaged by the eyeletr and washer, the movable member is moved to the end of its back travel to provide the desired length of string from the eyelet and Washer and then' suitable cutting ydevices are operated to clip the string adjacent the delivery end of the movable member leaving the movablemember in readiness to be moved forwardly to provide the next. envelope with a string. In my machine I prefer to operate all of the mechanism from a single operating shaft7 independent cam mechanism being provided 4for actu,- ating each of the devices cooperating in handling the' string and other parts,` Which operating shaft is preferably clutch controlled so that the operator by releasing the clutch permits the operating shaft to make one rotation Which moves all of the mechanism through the complete cycle of its operation.
My invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing a preferred embodiment thereof in which- Fig. 1 shows my machine in front elevation, parts of the machine being shown in section to more clearly illustrate the relation of the parts, with the movable inember in its string feeding position,

.is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 my machine consists of a base 20 on which an operating shaft 21 is mounted in suitable bearings to extend throughout the length of the machine and on this shaft a driving wheel 22 is mounted for free rotation excepting only when the clutch mechanism 23 is operated by the treadlc 24 through the communicating devices 25. at which time the driving wheel is connected to the shaft 21 and movesl the same through one rotation at the end of which the clutch mechanism 23 disengages the driving wheel and stops the operation of the main shaft7 assuming thatI the treadle 2st is released by the operator immediately after the operation of the same. The shaft 21 is provided with a hand wheel 2G for rotating the shaft manually in setting` up the machine.
The base 20 carries on its left hand p0rtion punches 27 and 28 as seen in Fig. 2. below each of which a perforating` punch is located as indicated at. 29 in Fig. 1, for the punch 27. the punch 29 serving to perforate the corresponding washer strip below the punch 27 after which the washer strip is fed upwardly as will be described in line with the punch 27 which cuts the washer from the strip and at the saine time engages an eyclet and secures the washer to the body portion of the envelope, the eyelets being fed into line with the punch 27 by the eyelet `guide 30. The punch 28 and its perforating punch similarly operate on a second washer strip with the exception that the punch 28 does not carry eyelets, but serves merely as a setting` punch for the eyelets supplied to the flaps of the envelopes by the punching mechanism on the other side of the machine. The punches 27 and 28 have secured to them. operating heads 31 and 32 which also engage the corresponding perforating punches referred to and these heads are connected together by a rod 38 engaged by a link 34 pivotally connected with the crank 35 carried by a shaft 3G mounted in a suitable bearing on the base 20. The other end of the shaft 36 has secured thereto a bevel gear 37 meshingl with a similar bevel gear 38 secured to the shaft 21. The head 31 is adjustable on the rod 33 as is also the guide on the base 20, provided for the punches 27 and 29. to allow different spacings between the eyelets attached to the body portion of the envelope and the eyelets attached to the flaps of the envelopes.

guide 97` the pivotirod 98 ot' which projecte I 100 in the die in line with the punch 40, engages a stop bar 101 carried by a plate 102 extending upwardly from the base 20; further movement of the arm 88 to bring it into engagement with its motion limiting stop 108, adjustably secured to the plate 102 as indicated` turns the guide 97 so that its nose is moved into the opening 100 and the gear 104, later described, is brought into mesh with the rack 105 mounted to slide in guides 106 carried by the plate 102. At the instant this relation is secured, the roller 88 engages a delay surface on the cam 89 and the rack 105 is actuated by the mechanism shown in Fig. This consists of a lever 107 pivotally supported on the plate 102 at 108, one end of which is pivotally connected at 109 with the rack 105 and the other end of which is connected with one end of a. link 94 the other end of which is pivotally connected with an arm 110 carried by the rock shaft 98, which carries a second arm 111 to which a roller 112 is secured resting upon the surface of the cam 92. A spring 118 is provided between the plate 102 and the link 94 to move the rack 105 to the left as shown in Fig. 5, when the cam 92 is in position to permit such motion. This occurs only during the interval that the arm 88 is 'held against its stop 108. In this manner the string is fed from the guide 97 through a washer aperture in line with th(` nose of said guide.
The detail construction of the spring guide is more clearly shown in Figs. 18 and 14 in which the guide 97 is shown mounted on and rigidly secured to the rod 98 pivoted in the forked lower end of the arm 88. The guide consists of two parts 978L and 97b pivoted together by means of a rod 114 and said parts carry respectively shafts or rods 115 and 116` to which are secured in the recess formed therefor in said parts, feeding rollers 11,7 and 118 respectively. Said rods extend above the parts of the string guide and have secured to their upper ends gears 104 and 10421 respectively which mesh with each other, the gear 104 being the one brought into mesh with the rack 105 by the operation above described. The part 97b is provided with a guiding passageway 119 for directing the string to the feeding rollers 117 and 118 which, as indicated in Fig. 18 are preferably grooved slightly and roughened or knurled to firmly engage the string. A spring 120 holds the outer ends of the parts 97:l and 97b together so that the feeding rollers nearly or quite engage each other and when the. string is to be inserted between the feeding rollers, the rollers may be separated slightly by pressure on the part 97b opposite the spring 120, which spring also provides an engagement between the feeding rollers and the string permitting irregularities in the string to pass through the feeding rollers without jamming the string or interfering with the operation of the devices employed to rotate the feeding rollers. A delivery passage 121 extends from the feeding rollers through the part 97a to the nose of the string` guide which as indicated is preferably tapered and pointed to clear the edge of the opening 100 shown in Fig. 8. A clearance 100a isv preferably cut in the edge of the opening 1.00 to more readily permit the nose of the string guide to enter the opening 100,
As shown in Fig. 8. the lower end of the rod 87 carries a forked guide 87 which passes around the shaft 21 to maintain the rod and roller 88 carried thereby in proper relation to the cam 89. The rod shown in Fig. 2 for operating the feeding rollers 57 and 60, and the similar rod employed for operating the feeding rollers 58 are U preferably similarly constructed to engage the shafts 86 and 47 respectively to hold the rollers carried by said rods in proper engagement with the cams 66 and 69 respec tively. As shown in Fig. 8, a spring 122 is provided between the base 20 and the upper end of the rod 87 to hold the roller 88 in engagement with the surface of the cam 89, said spring serving to move the arm 88 into its string feeding position when the position of the cam 89 permits said motion, motion in the opposite direction of the arm beingeffected positively by the cam 89. As also shown in Fig. 8, a sprin T 128 is providedV l-eiween a lug carried by the arm 99 and the arm 88 to hold the guide 97 substantially parallel with the plate 102 when the arm 99 is not in engagement with the stop 101. The string preferably extends from the passageway 119 shown in Figs. 18 and 14 upwardly along the arm 88, to which, if desired, it may loosely be held b v any suitable guides and from which it extends to a supply spool or roll not shown.
After the string has been fed through a washer aperture in the guide 52 by the devices above described the projecting end of the string is engaged by the gripper construction shown in Fig. 4. This consists of a pair of jaws 124 and 1.25 pivotally supported on a stud 126 projecting from the plate 102, so that in their open position they clear the openings and 127 in line with the punches 40 and 42. The aws are in the form of bell crank levers having arms projecting above and below the stud 126` the ends of said arms being connected by links 128 and 129 with the end of the operating rod 91 mounted to Slide horizontally in :i suitable guide 180. Springs 181 and 182 are connected between said links and said guide to move the rod 91 outwardly and the jaws 124 and 125 together, when the surface of the operating cam permits this motion. 139 in the form of bell crank levers which are pivotally connected hy links 140, 140 with a tired stud 141 extending 'from the guide 136. The bar 13T is provided with a laterally extending lug` 142 adjacent the sur- Jface ot the cam 97 to be engaged by an operating lug $.17 projecting trom the outer surface ot' the cam. A spring 143 has its ends connected to the studs 138 and 141 and tends to hold the bar 13T in its lowermost position in the guide 136. for which position the shear blades 139 occupy the position indicated in Fig. 8. The slide 137 is prevented trom moving beyond the position indicated in Fig. 6 by an enlarged head 144 carried on the upper end of the slide, which engages the upper end oiE the guide 136 for the lowermost position ot the sliding bar. trom which head the lug projects. A spring 145 is mounted ou the stud 136 and presses against the outermost shear blade 139 to hold the shear blades together with sutlicient pressure to insure a positive cutting ot the string. Immediatelj.Y upon the arm 83 reaching its eXtreme rear position for which the nose of the string guide is just back of the shear blades, the lug 9T engages the lug 142 and the slide 137 is raised bringing the shear blades together and since the string extending from the string guide to the envelope lies between the shear blades when they are raised, it .is severed when they are brought together. The operation ot the shear blades occurs at substantially the same time that the envelope is released by backward movement ot the several punches and the envelope may therefore be removed trom the machine as soon as it is released bythe punches. VThe interval required 'tor the operation of the shear blades is briet and is terminated as soon as the lug 9T passes under the lug 142 on account ot the increasing distance betwen the lugs as the cam 97 rotates and when said 1us are disengaged the spring 143 immediately moves the shear blades to their open position shown in Fig. 8. All ot the parts are placed iu readiness or a repetition ot the operation described, as soon as the punches reach their retracted position at which time the clutch mechanism 23 engages the shaft :21 and prevents rotation ot the sha't't until the clutch mechanism is again released.
It will be noted as indicated in Figs. 2 and 9 that the die plate 82 is mounted in a clearance opening in the anvil plate 81 which permits movement of the die plate towards or away tro-m the punch 28 as required to secure ditterent distances between the eyelets in the tlap and in the body portions o't the envelope, the punches Q7 and 29 being similarly adjustable on the base 2O as above described.
To insure proper operation of the punch to eii'eet the various operations described 1 prefer to construct the punch as shown in Figs. 11 and 12. The punch as shown in these figures, is in the form ot a tube throughout the greater portion of its length. which tube contains a rod 40 ot' smaller diameter than the bore ot' the tubular p0rtion and which extends thro'ugh the working end of the punch with a sliding tit` its diameter being such that it is also a sliding tit in the eyelets used in the machine. The rod 40 is secured at its inner end to a plunger 146 which is a sliding fit in the bore of the tubular portion ot' the punch 40 and 'from the other end of which a second rod 40h, similar to the rod 40, extends through a screw plug 40c screwed into the outer end of the punch 40, said rod 4Gb having at its outer end an enlarged head 40d to engage a bumper 40e when the plunger 146 is released. The head 40d also provides for setting the plunger in its operating position in the punch 40, it' desired in connection with setting up the machine. A spring 147 is contained in the punch 40 around the rod 40b between the plunger 146 and the plug 40c to move the rod 40a quickly through the eyelet to be operated upon, when the plunger 146 is released. latch 148 is pivotally connected at 149 to the tubular portion of the punch 4() so that in the position it naturally assumes b v gravity it engages the end ot the plunger 146 to hold it in a position compressing the spring 147. The latch is provided with a projecting pin 150 at its free end for engaging a cam 151 after the punch has been advanced somewhat on its forward stroke, the cam serving to lift the latch and disengage the plunger 146 at which time the spring 147 forces the rod 40'qu quickly through the eyelet in line therewith and also through the perforation in the washer strip after the string has been fed therethrough in the manner described. lVhen the punches have been advanced to set the eyelet, the spring 147 is compressed by the engagement between the outer end of the, rod a. and the punch 28 for which condition the latch 148 drops into the path of the plunger 14:6 to hold it in a position compressingthe spring 147. The cam 1514 as indicated in Fig. 1Q is provided with an inclined lateral surface 151a and the cam is supported in the path of the pin 150 by a flexible leaf spring`152 permitting lateral movement of the cani when the pin 150 engages the inclined surface 151@L and this permits the punch 0 to move to its rear orretracted position although the pin 150 is in the path ofthelcam 151.' The cam 151 is preferably secured to the base 20 in a manner as, indicatedat 153 permitting adpunch to effect the release of the plunger 1&6 at the precise moment desired, The relation of the punch 42 to the punch 40 is also shown in Fig. 11 and it will benoted thatthe end of the saidpunch is ofreduced diameter to perforate the washer strip in.

From the above description it will be noted that no tension or. stress is placed upon the string in placing it in position to be engaged by the eyelet and retaining Washer and that the only strain exerted on the string at any time is that required to move it through the various guiding devices and from the reel or. spool. On the other hand the string is positively fed to correct position to be engaged and clamped by the washer7 before any clamping action is exerted upon the string after which the string is engaged and secured between the eyelet and the edge of a washer perforation in the Washer strip before the Washer is formed, after which the string is securely clamped between the Washer and the outer face of the flap of the envelope by the setting of the eyelet. As a result of securing the string in this manner, the st ringextends outwards radially ofthe washer on both sides thereof and is held so securely by the clamping action that it cannot be pulled out without tearing the washer.
lVhile I have shown my invention in the particular embodiment above described, it will be understood that Ido not, limit myself to this exact construction but that I may employ equivalents` known to the art at the time of the filing of thisapplication Without departing from they scope of the appended claims.
That I claim is:
1. String feeding mechanism for machines for securing washers and strings to envelopes having meansfor supporting lan envelope and a perforated Washer blanlr at a distance from each other as a partof such machine7 consisting of mechanism movable between and away from the spaced envelope and Washer blanr tofeed a string through the. perforation in a Washer blank.

String feeding mechanism for machines for securing Washers and strings to envelopes having means for supporting an envelope and a perforated washer blank at a distance from each other as a part of such machine, consisting of mechanism movable between and away from the spaced envelope and washer blank to feed a string through the perforation in a washer blank, said mechanism comprising a member having cyclic motion, and string feeding devices carried by the delivery portion of said member.

String feeding mechanism for machines for securing washers and strings to envelopes having means for supporting an envelope and a perforated washer blank at a distance from each other as a part of such machine, consisting of mechanism movable between and away from the spaced envelope and washer blank to feed a string through the perforation in a washer blank, said mechanism comprising a member having cyclic motion in a first direction, a string delivering device carried by said member and'movable relatively thereto to present the end of the string to the perforation in a washer blank, feeding rollers carried by said delivering device, gears secured to said rollers, a movable rack for operating said gears, a cam, and operating connections between said cam and rack, movement of said delivering device relatively to said member moving one of said gears into or from the path of said rack.

String feeding mechanism for inachinesrfor securing eyelets, perforated washers and strings to envelopes, comprising a member having cyclic mot-ion., a string delivering device carried by said member and movable relatively thereto` to present the end of a string to the perforation in Washer, feeding yrollers carried by said dellO livering device, and a gripper for holding the string end projecting through the washer perforation to permit movement of said string feeding mechanism from its feeding position.

String feeding mechanism for machines for securing eyelets, perforated washers and strings to envelopes, comprising 'string feeding mechanism for feeding a string end through a washer perforation, a gripper for holding the string end projecting through the washer perforation to permit movement of said string feeding mechanism from its feeding position, and shearing mechanism for cutting the string adjacent to string feeding mechanism.
24. In a machine of the class described, string feeding mechanism comprising a member having cyclic motion, and feeding rollers adjacent and carried by its delivery end for feeding a string.

In a machine of the class described, string feeding mechanism for feeding a string through a washer perforation, said string feeding mechanism comprising a member having cyclic motion, feeding rollers adjacent and carried by its delivery end for feeding a string, gears secured to said rollers, and a movable rack for operating said gears.

In a machine of the class described, string feeding mechanism for feeding a string through a washer perforation, said string feeding mechanism comprising a member having cyclic motion, feeding rollers adjacent and carried by its delivery end for feeding a string, gears secured to said rollers, a movable rack for operating said gears, a cam, and operating connections between said cam and rack.

In a machine of the class described, string feeding mechanism for feeding a string through a washer perforation, said string feeding mechanism comprising a member having cyclic motion, a string delivering device carried by said member and movable relatively thereto to present the end of the string to a perforation in a washer, and feeding devices carried by said delivering device.

In a machine of the class described, string feeding mechanism for 'feeding a string through a washer perforation, said string feeding mechanism comprising a member having cyclic motion, a string delivering device carried by said member and movable relatively thereto to present the end of the string to a perforation in a washer, and feeding rollers carried by said delivering device.

In a machine of the class described, string feeding mechanism for feeding a string through a washer perforation, said string feeding mechanism comprising` a member having cyclic motion, a string delivering device carried by said member and movable relatively thereto to present the end of the string to a perforation in a washer, feeding rollers carried by said delivering` device, gears secured to said rollers, and a movable rack for operating said gears,

In a machine of the class described, string feeding mechanism for feeding a string through a washer perforation, said. string feeding mechanism comprising a member having cyclic motion, a string delivering device carried by said member movable relatively thereto to present the end of the string to a perforation in a washer, feeding rollers carried by said delivering device, gears secured to said rollers, a movable rack for operating said gears, al cani, and operating connections between said cam and rack, movement of said delivering device relatively to said member moving one of said gears into or from the path of said rack.
3l. In a machine of the class described, string feeding` mechanism for feeding a string through a washer perforation, said string feeding mechanism comprising an oscillatory arm, and string feeding devices carried by the delivery end of said arm.
32. In a machine of the class described, string feeding mechanism for feeding a string through a washer perforation, said string `feeding mechanism comprising an oscillatory arm, and string feeding rollers carried by the delivery end of said arm.
In a machine of the class described, the combination of string feeding mechanism for feeding a string end through a washer perforation, and a gripper for holding the string end projecting through the washer perforation to permit movement of said string feeding mechanism from its feeding position.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of string feeding mechanism for feeding a string end through a washer perforation. and a gripper for holding the string end projecting through the washer perforation to permit movement of said string feeding mechanism from its feeding position, said gripper comprising two jaws pivotally supported, and springs tending` to move said jaws together, a cam. and connections between said cam and said jaws releasing said jaws after said string is fed through the washer perforation and and f opening said j :nvs when the string feeding mechanism is moved backward away from the washer.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of string feeding mechanism for feeding a string through a` Washer perforation, a gripper for holding the string projecting through a Washer perforation to permit movement of said string feeding mechanism from its feeding position, and shearing mechanism for cutting the string adjacent the string feeding mechanism, said shearing mechanism comprising shear blades, a slide carrying said blades, a iiXed support, connections extending from said blades to said fixed support for operating said blades by movement of said slide, a spring tending to hold said slide in position opening said blades, and a cam having a. lug extending into the path of said slide to operate said slide and blades.

In a machine of the class described, the combination of string feeding mechanisin movable between and away from a perforated Washer and envelope to feed a string through a Washer perforation, a grip-per for holding the end of said string during motion of said string feeding mechanism away from its feeding position, and shearing mechanism for cutting the string adjacent the string feeding mechanism in its retracted position, said shearing mechanism con'iprising shear blades, a slide carrying said blades, a fixed support, connections extending from said blades to said fixed support `for operating said blades by movement of said slide, a spring tending to hold said slide in position opening said blades, and a cam having a lug extending into the path of said slide to operate said slide and blades.
