T0 all whome't maxi/fl concern.' Y
Be it known that I, GRovER C. MASON, a citizen of' the 'United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks and more particularly to window sash locks. Y
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of means for locking the windows of a. building in open positlon to exclude entrance therethrough from the exterior of the building.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a window sash lock which is adapted to retain either one or both sashes in any desired open position, so that further opening thereof from the exterior is prevented.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a window sash lock which is adapted to retain either one or both sashes of a window in open position so that any movement thereof from the exterior must necessarily be to further close the window.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a window sash lock which will readily retain the sashes in open locked position and permit them to be closed independently without releasing their locking elements.
Aside from the aforesaid objects, this invention resides in the provision of means for locking the sashes of a window together in open position, so that they cannot be shifted up. and down in the frame.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain' novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of elements to be hereinafter more fully set forth in the specification, illustrated in the drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional View of a window frame showing the sashes therein and the elements of this invention in operative relation therewith.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view on line v2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vsimilar view on line 3"--3 of Fig. l,
c In v theapresent embodiment of.L inivenrA Y tionrwthel numeral; 5.,.designates:1a:y windiwv frame.; 1n;y Wlnicha` is slidablyI lsupp'oritied,.f.in.
the usual manner, an upper sash 6 and lower sash 7.
Suitably secured to the side rails 8 of the upper and lower sashes are rack bars 9.
Rigidly secured to the upper rail of the' lower sash is a bracket 10 having a forked end 11 between the arms of which isjournaled a gear wheel'12 to one side of which 1s secured a'ratchet wheel. 13. The aforesaid gear wheel 12 is adapted to mesh withr the teeth of the rack bar 9 of the upper sash and is prevented from rotating in one direction, that is anti-clockwise, through the instrumentality of a yieldable pawl 14 pivotally carried by the bracket 10 and extended into engagement with the ratchet wheel 13. This pawl 14 is provided with an extension 15 for releasing the pawl from engagement with the ratchet wheel 13 when it is necessary to open the upper sash from the inside.
Secured to the frame 5 a suitable distance below the upper rail of the lower sash is a forked bracket 16, in the forked arms of which is journaled a gear wheel 17 to one side of which is secured a ratchet wheel 18. The gear wheel 17 is adapted to mesh with the rack bar 9 carried by the side rail of the lower sash, and is prevented from rotating 1n a clockwise direction through the instrumentality of a yieldable pawl 19 pivotally supported by the bracket 16. This pawl` is provided with an extension 19 adapted to be manipulated to disengage the bill thereof from the teeth of the ratchet wheel 18 so the lower sash can be raised from the inside.
Vith the aforesaid combination of elements applied to a window, it is apparent that the sashes thereof can be locked in open position to exclude entrancetherethrough from the exterior of the building, and, while the windows can be readily unlocked from the inside for further opening, the only movement permissible from the outside is that of closing them.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is: i
1. A window sash lock of the character set forth, comprising rack bars secured to the inner faces of the sashes, forked brackets having their free ends apertured'and extending adjacent the rack bars, gear wheels supported in the forked ends of the brackets, ratchet Wheels secured to the gear Wheels and carried Within the forks of the brackets, pawls secured to the sides of the brackets andihavingl their inner endsof'fset in alignment With the ratchet Wheels, and expansible coilv springs secured to the sides of the brackets and bearing'against the opposite ends of the pawis.
2. A Window sash lock of the character set forth,` comprising rack bars secured to theinn'er facesof the rsashes, offset brackets having their free ends forked and extending GROVER op MAsoN.
