To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER B. VANDI- GRIFT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Fulton County, near Dunwoody, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to toys, and aims to provide a novel and improved toy including an acrobatic figure and novel means for mounting the toy and setting it in motion, for the amusement and entertainment of children.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be understood as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein the figure is a perspective View of the toy.
The frame of the toy includes an arch 1 having the standards 2 and top yoke or lintel 3. Such arch is supported by two pairs of legs or braces 4 at the opposite sides, each pair of legs or braces being inclined in opposite directions and crossing one another. The legs or braces are pivoted, at their points of crossing, on bolts 5 engaglng through the standards 2 of the arch, whereby when the clamping and pivot bolts 5 are loosened, the legs can be swung into proper position against the floor or sup-porting surface on which the arch 1 rests, or the legs or braces can be swung into position adjacent to and parallel with the standards 2, when folding the device to be shipped or stored away. By tightening the bolts 5 the le s or braces are clamped either in supporting position, as illustrated, or in folded position.
An acrobatic articulated figure 7 is carried by a rotatable shaft 6 having its terminals mounted for rotation in the standards 2 of the arch, and said figure may be in the form of an animal or a human being, which ever is preferred. The figure comprises the body 8 having the arms 9 and legs 10 pivotally connected thereto, the arms being secured to the shaft 6, so that the body-8 dangles loosely from the arms, while the legs 10 are loosely supported from the body, in order that the turning or rotary movement of the shaft will give the figure lifelike acrobatic movements to the amusement and entertainment of the onlookers.
In order to set the figure 7 in motion, an
operating .the toy, the frame is held by one will either impart a swinging motion to the arm 11 and figure 7, or if the target is struck hard enough, the arm and figure are caused to turn completely around one or more times with the shaft 6. The arm 11 and figure 7 will come to rest in depending position, as shown, to bring the target into position to be struck by the member 15.
The elastic 14: being secured to the frame at below or beyond the margin of the target 12 will require some skill in causing the member 15 to strike the target, it being necessary to give said member an upward motion when directed toward the target or said member may not strike the target.
By loosening the bolts 5 and swinging the braces or legs adjacent to the standards 2, the toy can be compactly stored away or placed in a flat box.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A toy comprising a pair of standards, a rotary shaft mounted in said standards, a cross bar secured to said standards below bar, said figure and arm being disposed between the standards to rotate with the shaft above the cross bar. 10
