H. J. SHELTON GRINDER AND SHREDDER.

UNITEDI STATES HARRY J'. BHELTON, 0l' BT. LOUIS,A IISNUI.
GBJJI'DEB AND SHBEDDEB.
Application med November 1, 1m. Serial le. 500,856.
To all whom z't may concern.:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. SHnL'roN, residing in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in Grinders and Shredders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to grinders and Shredders and more particularly to rinders and Shredders wherein the material to be ground is, to a certain extent, drawn or blown into the machine by a current of air induced by a suction fan and is drawn or blown, in the same manner, from the housing of the machine after it has been ground.
In using such a machine if one material is ground and then it is desired to grind a material to a different degree of fneness it is necessary to change the erforated late forming the lower circum erential wal of the grinding chamber so as to provide a surface having either smaller or larger openings, as the case may be, through which material is passed when ground.
Heretofore ders and Shredders have been made Wit the housing thereof'formed with an upper and lower section, one lower edge of the u per section being hinged to the correspon in upper edge of the lower section so that t e upper section might be swung away from the lower section to ex- Iose the grinding chamber of the machine.
o gain access in this wa to the grinding chamber in a grinder an shredder and to change the tperforated plate therein, was a long and te ious task since a feed pipe connecting with a bin was usually attached to the intake opening of the grinder and this pipe had to be removed or artially removed when the upper section o the grinder and shredder was swung back las described above. In addition it was diicult to remove the perforated late even after access to the grindin cham er had been obtained.
The o jects of my invention are to grovide a grinder and shredder constructe so that the rforated plate formi the lower wall of t e grinding. chamber t erein may yand lower sections; to
be luickly and easily removed and replaced i wit removable cage for hol ng the perforated rovide a partially,
plate forming the lower wall of the -grinding chamber; and to provide means whereby said cage and said perforated plate may be easily rendered accessible.
My. invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings wherein similar letters are used to designate similar parts. Fig. 1 is a-(plan view, in section, of a grinder and shre der embody my invention; and Fig. 2 is a partial side view along the lines 2-2 in Fig. 1.
`Referring to the figures the grinder has the housing A, comprising the side walls E, only shown in part in the drawings, which are held together by the tie rods a back wall, preferabl formed by the plate F; and a front wall The housing A has the grinding chamber B therein with the ham-v mers C mounted on and ada ted to be rotated lEiy the shaft D ourna ed in the side walls as shown in ig. 1. The grinding chamber has the up er circumferential wall T, onl partially s own, which terminates at its ront end in a bar N attached thereto and which, lpreferabl extends between the side walls of the ousing. yA grinding plate K, only partially shown, is preferab y mounted so as to cover apart of the in- .side surface of the wall T, all vas shown in Fig. 2. The lower circumferential wall of the grinding chamber Bis formed by the@ perforated plate H which is removably mounted in the substantially semi-circular cage J. One end of the cage J, referably the rear end, is provided with t e lugs L so that the cge may be sw'inably mounted on the rod as shown in i. 2. The other end of the ca e J is provide withthe flange N which is a ted to be held in contact with and secure tothe bar Nbythe bolts O or any other suitable means, preferably, arran ed so as to be loosened or -ti htened from t e outside of the housing. e
housing whereby lower edge of the front wall G is inserted in the recesses P formed near the lower edges of the side walls E and the upper end of the wall G is normally heldin place by the wedge R which lits in the slots Q. The slots 'Q are, preferably, formed in lugs Q extending from the side walls E, as shown in Flg. 1. The ribs S positioned on the side walls of the housing and arranged to follow the contour of the lower circumferential wall of the grinding chamber are provided to make a close joint between the side walls E and the plate H when in operative sition.
When it is desired'to substltute for the perforated late H a plate having different size per orations therein the wed e R 1s removed from the slots Q, thereby al owing the front wall G to be swung outwardly atl the top, as shown in Fig. 2, and then 'be removed by liftin the lower end thereof out of the recesses The bolts O which normally hold the cage in lace at the lower side of thel grinding cham r are removed `and the cage J is swung into the position shown b the dotted lines in Fig. 2. The perforated p ate H may then be quickly and easily removed and a new plate substituted therefor. When the substitution has been completed the cage is raised so that the flange N engages with the bar N and the bolts O are inserted in place. When the cage J is lowered any load which is in the machine is dumped into the lower part of the housing thus rendering it easier to move the perforatedplate H, as described. When the bolts 0 have been put in place and tightened, the lower edge of the front wall Gis inserted in the recesses P, then swung into place and the wedge R is hammered down into the slots Q.
I do not propose to limit my invention to the specific details of construction shown in the drawingssince it may be readily seen that the method of normally holding the cage J in place, the method of retaining the front wall G in place, and the form of the various parts, may be varied within wide limits without deviating from the spirit of my lnvention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
