' HINGE CLAMP roe ATTACHING ,mrnnofinnenantn FEED CHUTES To AMMUNITION aspires,
. Application fi1e i1 iani1 aryj2 ,1 3 22. Serial 118,530,722. j,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, DW GHrC. MAIER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at; Bryan, in the county of Williams andState of Ohio, have invented certain new andnse ful Improvements in Hinge Clamps for At'- taching' Interchangeable Feed Chutes to Ammunition Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clamps for attaching interchangeable feed chutes to ammunition boxes.
The object of the invention is to produce a clamp for the purpose above referred to which is adapted to secure the chute firmly to the ammunition box, the clamp being of such construction that the members may be separated instantly for the purpose of detaching the chute from the ammunition box. In order to release or detach the chute, it is only necessary to loosen the end or ends of the clamping member and turn the latter through an arc of approximately 90 degrees. The clamping member always remains attached to one of the members.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of portions of an ammunition box and feed chute showing the applied relation of the clamp thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary cross section on the line 22 of Figure 1 showing the clamping member in its operative and attaching portion.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the feed chute standing at an angle to the ammunition box.
Figure 4 is a section taken along the line 44 of Figure 1.
In the drawings, 1 designates an ammunition box and 2 a feed chute hingedly. attached thereto. It is proposed to construct and arrange the clamp in such manner that interchangeable feed chutes 2 may be applied to and removed from the ammunition box by 0 the same clamp connection.
One of the members such as the ammunition box 1, is provided on the outer face thereof with a series of projections 3 preferably in the form of tubular knuckles as shown in Figures 2' and Extending through knuckles is a clamping memb'e'r 4 having journaled portions .5 which pass 'through and are adapted to be rocked into the knuckles 3 and also 7 having offset portions 6 which are'adap'ted to beinoved into and out of embracing engagementwith other projections 7 of the feed chute 2. When in the last named position, the members 1 and 2 are securely attached to each other and also adapt feed chute 2 to be swung laterally upon the hinge connection so formed. The clamping member as a whole may thus be described as having staggered portions alternating with each other, and certain portions forming journaled parts of the clamping member and the remaining portions forming the attaching means for embracing the projections of the feed chute.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention the end portions of the clamping,
member are extended at an angle to the main axis of the clamping member to provide a pair of arms 8 as shown in Figure 1 and these arms are designed to be forced under keepers 9 fixedly secured to the feed chute. Holding means are thus provided for securing the end or ends of the clamping member and preventing any turning movement thereof, thus insuring the secure attachment of the members 1 and 2'to each other.
It will be obvious that it will be suflicient to provide one arm 8 instead of two arms, as shown, as one arm will prevent any turning movement of the clamping member in relation to the feed chute 2 and thereforesecure a firm connection between the feed chute and the ammunition box. To detach the feed chute it is only necessary to release the arms 8 and turn the clamping member through approximately degrees, whereupon the feed chute may be instantly separated from the ammunition box.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with adjacent members, each having projections, of a clamping member having staggered portions some of which have a journaled connection with the projections of one of the adjacent members and others of which are adapted to embrace the projections of the other of the adjacent members so that by turning the clamping member having staggered portions j some of Which have a ournaled COIIIIGCtlOILWltiI ing member in one direction the adjacent members are hin'gedly attached and byturn ingi'the'elamping member in'the opposite di rection the adjacent members are-sepa-rab1e-.-"
2. The combination with adjacent mem bers, each having projections, of a clampthe projections of one of the adjacent members and others of which are'adapted to embrace the projections ofthe other, of the adjacent members so that by turningthe lclamping member in one direotion the' adi jaeent= members are .hingedly attached and by turning the clamping member in theop- 'posite direction the adjacent members are separable, and means Y for releasably holding the ends of the clamping member to prevent turmn'g movement thereof.
centmembers having abutting ends, means for clamping said members together, said means comprising a clamping member formed of convolutions, -the-a1ternates of Which are jo-urnaled in the endof one of said adjacent members, the remaining con- Volutions'being-adapted to releasably engage the abutting end ofthe other adjacent member, said adj aeent members being adapted to be disengaged from each other by a rotation of said-clamping member.
In testimony whereof I have afliXed my signature. j a
