I CARD GAME.

Be it known that we, Jmcono HINO and KIYOTAKA Srnnnmsubjects of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Card Games, of. which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact "description,- reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to games and particularly to a card game.

The card game comprises a deck of cards made up of a plurality of groups, certain of which have similar characteristics and certain of which have dis-similar characteristics both from each other and from the group having the samecharacteristics.

The cards preferably have indicating means thereon to indicate the valu-e of the cards. Further, the cards preferably have characters or symbols thereon for indicating the value of the cardsand the suit or group to which the cards belong. The symbols vary in accordance with the value of the cards in one characteristic but all the symbols or illustrations relating to one suit have common characteristics to distinguish that suit from the other suits. I

It is a purpose of the invention to provide cards for playing card games that constitute groups as set forth above and having the characteristics set forth above, certain of which cards are, in addition, provided with supplemental symbols or indicating means to indicate individual cards in'certain of the groups, these individual cards together again forming other groups independent of the first groups. That is, a card taken from one group, a card taken from a second group and a card taken from a third group each have a certain symbol or indicating means thereon to indicate that these cards together form a group or are related to each other. The game further comprises a plurality of said last mentioned groups of cards that have symbols or indicating means thereon to distinguish the cards of one of said last mentioned groups from the cards of another of said last mentioned groups. 7

Due to the irregular arrangement of the cards in groups or suitswith different values attached to the cards of the different groups in certain and with the same values attached to the cards ofsome of the groups in other cases; and with the additional groupmg of the oards, due to the supplemental symbols referred to, there is a much greater variety of combinations of cardsor groups of cards'obtainable' from such an arrangement, than with the ordinary deck of play-.-

The group designated by the character B, of which the card 24 forms a part, corresponds to the group comprising the cards 26, 27 and 28, this group having two cards of the same value having the indicating' numeral 1 thereon, which are designated by the numeral 26, a card 27 having a different: value with the indicating numeral 5 in the corners thereof, and a card 28 having a still different value with the indicating numeral 10 in the corners thereof.

The group comprising the cards 29, 30 and 31 also comprises two cards of the same value having the indicating numerals 1 thereoma card of the same value as the card 27 having the indicating numeral 5 thereon and a card of the same value as the card 28 having the indicating numeral 10 thereon, these being designatedrespectively by the numerals 31, 30 and 29.

v The group comprising the. cards 26, .27 and 28' carries .a distinctive character such "as the, letter D'thereon and each of these cards has a variation .in the character corresponding to'the value of. the card. Thus, the card 27 has the D underlined and the card 28 has a partial border around the D to indicate a difierent value for this card thanthe card carrying the numeral 5 and to indicate still a diiferentvalue than a card bearing the numeral 20, such asthe card 23.

The card 25. is shown to illustrate the thirdgroup of cards which is designated by the character C merely for illustrative purposes. It will be noted that .thB'CZIFCl and the card 22 have numerous similar characteristics and that these cards. include a supplemental symbol providing. a variation still different from those above referred to. "The cards 22 and 25 each bear the numerals 5 in the cornersthereof, each have a main symbol thereon which is similar and each carries an additional symbol indicated by the nu- :meral'47, this being shown asbeing in the form of a bowof ribbon of a distinctive color, the color being illustrated as being red in the drawings. While only two cards having these similar symbols thereon are shown, in the complete deck there are three cards belonging tothe red ribbon group.

The group represented by the card 25 bearing the character C is made up of four cards having the values shown for the group A.

The group indicated by the character E, comprising the cards 29, and 31, is similar to the group D and the group represented by the card 33 bearing the character G, and the group illustrated by the card 38 bearing the character J are the same in arrangement and in relative value as the group comprising the cards 26, 2'? and 28 and the group comprising the cards 29, and 31, and for this reason the complete group is not illustrated.

The group illustrated by the card 32 is similar to these groups except that the card of this group bearing the numeral 5, which is the illustrated card, has a bow of ribbon provided thereon of a difl'erent color than the bow 47, this bow being indicated by the numeral 48 and being shown in the dra.w-' ings as being blue. The card 37, representing the group carrying the character i, also is provided with a symbol 48 in the form of a bow of ribbon which :is also of the same color as that of the card 32. There are three cards in the complete deck belonging to this group each having a ribbon of the same color, such as blue, thereon but differing in color from that carried by the group of cards comprising the cards 22 and 25.

It will be noted that the first group described, or that carrying the character A, is different from the groups referred to above in that instead of having cards bearing the numerals 1, 5 and 10 to indicate the relative values of the cards, this group comprises cards bearing the numerals 1, 1, 5 and 20.

The group comprising the cards 34, 35 and 36 is dis-similar from any of the groups mentioned above in that it includes two cards 36 bearing the numeral 1, a card 35 hearing the numeral 10 and a card 34 bearing the numeral 20, this group being provided with a suitable symbol, such as the character H, to indicate the group modified to indicate the cards of different value in a similar manner to the corresponding cards in the groups designated by the characters A and D.

The group comprising the cards 39, 40, 41 and-42 differs from any of the groups mentioned above in that it comprises only one card of each value, that is, the card 42 has the numeral 1 thereon to indicate the value thereof, the card 41 has the numeral 5 thereonindicating the value thereof, the card has the numeral 10 thereon to indi- 'cate the value thereof and the card has the numeral 20 thereon to indicate thevalue thereof.

The group comprising the cards 43 and H comprisesthree cards 44 that are alike each bearing the numeral 1 and one different card A?) bearing the. numeral 20. The group comprising the cards 39, 40, 41 and 42 carries the symbol K and the group comprising the cards 43 and l l. carries the character L as a symbol to indicate the a group.

I The game is played with two or. more persons and the'cards are dealt in much the same manner as in the well known card games played in this country, although the present game ispatternedsomewhat after an ancient Japanese game. The gameis ordinarily played with some sort of counters such aschips and the dealer is determined on beginning to play the game, the person drawing the card having the highest number dealing. Below is explained the game as played by three players. v I

In dealing the cards they are dealt one at a time in a clockwise direction about the table until each person I has seven cards. Six cards are then taken from the deck and laid on the table face up and the remainder of the deck is placed on the table with the backs up. The dealer then begins to play. In case there are four cards of the same kind on the table, that is, belonging to the same group, face up, it is a misdeal and the cards are dealt over .again. If three cards of the same group are face up on the table a player who has the fourth card of the group can take the entire group of three cards off the table.

If there is one card on the table of the same group as one held in the hand of the dealer or other player the player places the card that he has in his hand on the card belonging to the same group on the table and takes them and places them in front of his place at the table. Then the player draws a card from the remainder of the deck that has been placed on the table and sees if he can match this card with a card on-the table. If so, he plays in the same manner as before. Otherwise, he places the card face up on the table along with the others. The next player, clockwise around the table then plays in the same manner.

In case the dealer or an other player has no card in his hand of t e same group as one of the cards on the table, then the player places a card face up on the table out ofhis hand that is of as lOW avalue as hecan find in his hand. Then .he draws a card from the pile on the table and in case it belongs to a group that is on the table the player can take both of the cards of, the same group;

If he can not do this, heleaves the card on the. table face up, as explained above. The

next player, in a clockwise direction then plays in the, same manner. As' there are 48 cards, six on the table, twenty-one in the hands of the players and twenty-one in the deck on the table when play begins, each player plays seven times in each game The game continues, of course, until all of the cards have been played.

The numbers in the corners of the cards indicate the; points in valuethat each of the cards carries. The total'nu'mber of pointson all the. cards is 264. Accordingly, if. three players are playing, if each acquires. the samenumber of points they would each have 88. Anyone having ,more than 88 points collects the number of counters: or chips above 88 from the other players and, the. players that'have' less than 88 points have to pay the player 'having more than 88 points the deficiency between 88 points and the total number of pointsthat they have acquired,

any of the threeribbons; or thefour'greats is the winner of this game and receives 200 points for the three red ribbons from each vof the other players, 200 points for the three blue ribbons from each of the other players and 300 points from each of the other players for the four greats. The next game is played the'same way except that'the Winner of the last played game is the dealer for the next succeeding game.

The ancient Japanese game, after which the above described game is patterned, is ordinarily illustrated in such a manner that each group of cards represents a month of the year, that is, the group A represents January, B represents February, C. March, D April, E May, F June, G July, H August, I September, J October, K November and L December, and a complete game in the ancient Japanese game comprises 12 deals, one corresponding to each of the months of the year. The above described game is patterned after the Japanese game referred to to the extent that 12 hands or deals are played to play a complete game.

Having thus described our invention what we desire to claim and secure by -United States Letters Patent is:

1. In a card game, a plurality of cards having means thereon for indicating the values of said cards, said cards com.- prising groups having similar indicating means thereon, each of said groups comprising a pair of cards having the same indicating means and apair of cards having different indicating means, and other groups hav ing different indicating means thereon than those of said first mentioned groups.

2. In a card game, a plurality of cards -;having means thereon for indicating the values of said cards, said cards comprising groups having similar indicating means thereon and groups having different indicating means thereon, each card having .a symbol thereon, the symbols of each group being similar but varying in accordance With the values of the cards.

3. In a card game, a plurality of cards having .nieans thereon for indicating .the

;values of said cards, said cards comprising groups having similar indicating means thereon and groups each having indicating means thereon differing from the indicating means of all the other groups, each card having a symbol thereon, the symbols of each ent indicating means, and other groups hav-' ing different indicatmg means thereon than those of said first mentioned groups, each card having a symbol thereon, the symbols of each group being similar, the cards having the same indicating means having the same symbol thereon.

5. In avcard game, a plurality of cards having means thereon for indicating the values of said cards, said cards comprising groups having similar indicating means thereon and groups having different indicating means thereon, a single card in each of a plurality of groups having a supplemental symbol thereon. In a card game, a plurality of cards having means thereon for indicating the values of said cards, .said cards comprising groups having similar'indicating means thereon and groups'having different indicat ing means thereon, a single card in each of a plurality of groups having a supplemental" symbol thereon, said symbols being of two different kinds.
