Be it known that I, PHILIP G. Guam, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of North Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mechanical Demonstrating Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
. The object of this invention 1s to provide a machine for mechanical demonstration of suction sweepers or other machines which are reciprocated back and forth in their operation.
It is the desideratum in the operation of such a machine to approximate 'asnearly as possible actual operating condltions as usually encountered therefor.
A further object of my invention 1s to as ating conditions of the machine being demonstrated.
For a complete description of my machine reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout and wherem- Fi '1 is a complete demonstrating unit in si e elevation,
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1,
Fi 3 is a detail partly in section showing t e gear reduction,
Figs. 4 and 5 are elevation and plan vlews, respectively, of details of the ratchet operatin mechanism, and
Fig. 6 is an elevation of the cam for operating the ratchet mechanism.
In the drawings there is shown a tablelike structure indicated generally as 10 havin to 11 and le 12.
llmfer the tab e top and longitudinally thereof there is mounted a relatlvely large roller. Near each side edge of the table is mounted a smaller roller .14 and paral-.
lel to but slightly separate from large roll 13 is adjustab y mounted a third small roller 15 which by means indicated generally at 16 may be moved toward or away from large a transverse slot at 21. This slotreceives a pin 22 by means of which reciprocating movement is imparted to rod 19. Reciprocating mot-ion is imparted to the pin 22 by means of cam 23.
When an endless carpet 29 'is placed on rolls 13, .14, 14 and made taut by roper adjustment of adjustable roll 15 ing means 16,. starting of the -motor will cause a step by step movement of carpet 29. Rotation of cam 23 causes through roller 28 and pin 22 a reciprocation of push rod 19 whic through pawl 18 and ratchet wheel 17 imparts step by step movement. to large roll 13 thereby moving the carpet correspondingly.
The structure for imparting a forward and backward motion to the machine being demonstrated such as a suction cleaner 33 will now be described.
On shaft 32 of the worm reduction there is secured crank 34, to which is pivotally connected one end of link 35 the other end pivotally. connecting as at 36 to lever 37 pivotally mounted at 38 on main frame 10. The handle of the machine'tobe demonstrated is pivotally connected at 39 to the upper endof lever 37 and there 'is provided at this point a. counting mechanism generally indlcated at 40.
The operation of the entire structure de- I scribed when the motor is started is to cause arm 37 to oscillate, which moves the machine, being demonstrated, backward and forward over the carpet which is given a step by step motion as previously ex lained. Cam 23 is so designed that the step by step y 'adjust- Y movement is imparted'to the carpetwhen the wheels of the machine being demonstrated are off the carpet at each the front and rear end of its traverse. If the cam is not designed this way there is a very undesirable side twist transmitted to lever 37 At its forwardend table 10 is provided with a mirror 41 pivotall mounted at 42 and lights 43 are provided, the whole mounted in housing 44. The purpose of this last structure is toshow operating arts of the bottom of the machine when t e same are visible, from the bottom, the stroke o f the demonstrating machine being such that the front part of the machine demonstrated projects" over the edge of the table at the forward end of the stroke.
If desired, the 11 of the table may be covered beyond the edges of the carpet with a sound deadenin material such as rubber Having fullyv escribed the construction and operation of my invention 1. The combination of an article to be.-
used on carpets and mechanism for demonstration thereof, means for causing reciprocation of the article, a portion of the mechanism for demonstrating comprising a carpet over which the demonstrated article is reciprocated, the mechanism for demonstrating having means causing progressive stepby-step movement of the carpet in timed relation to reciprocations of the article thereover.
7 2. Structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein the means for causing step by step move ment of the carpet comprises'cam, pawl and ratchet wheel mechanism.
3. Structure as claimed in claim 1 wherein the means for reciprocating the article comprises an oscillating lever.
- 4. Structure as claimed in claim 1 where in the means for causing step by step moveand ratchet mechanism and wherein the 45 means for reciprocati ng the article comprises an oscillating lever.
5. The combination of a device for the display of a structure and a structure to be displayed, the device comprising a sta:
tionary platform and a movable platform on which the structure is displayed, the movable platform covering a portion of the stationary latform, means to cause recipro= cation oft e structure displayed and means displayed, the device comprising a station-" ary platform and a movable platformon which the structure is displayed, the movable platform covering a portion of the stationary platform, means to cause recipro- I cation of the structure displayed and means 85 for causing lateral movement of the movable platform over the stationary platform in timed relation tothe reciprocation of the structure displayed.
7. display device for suction cleaners 7 compris ng a mechanism adaptedto reciprocate the cleaner along a. fixed path, a laterally movable carpet positioned to form' a part of said path, and means to shift said carpet laterally when the cleaner is at the end of the stroke of the cleaner.
8. A mechanical device for operating suction cleaners comprising a support for floor coverings, means to impart a to and fro movement of the suction cleaner over-the so floor covering, and means for laterally Shift. ing the floor covering at the end of each to and fro movement of the cleaner.
Signed at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 11th day of October A. D. 1923.
I PHILIP G. GRAB.
