Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. RILEY, a citizen of the United States,`and resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of nMassachusetts', have invented an Improvement in Shingle Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection With'theJ accompanying drawings, is a specification,

My present invention is a novel and improved shingle fastener, adapted for use 1n MacInnes, Ser. No.fi621`,-718, filed February 28,1923.
, In the development of the, art of roofing, particularlyl by means of flexible composition shingles, it is important t0 provide means for fastening, alining, holding and .interlocking the shingles, either with or Without specially formed, cut or prepared shingles; present invention is adapted particularly to provide a fastening member, preferably metallic, which can be utilized to hold, aline, maintain and interlock shin gles, whether, composition -orlof other material, in a firm, r1gid'and permanent manner, either with or withoutspecial notching,
. slotting, cutting or forming rthe shingles v site sides of the body of thefastener itself.
In my present invention I have devised an improved form offastener adapted for 1nterlocking use with a shingle, either specially prepared, notched or cut,.or of plain, square angles, and also with the interlocking flanges of the metallic fastener allfprojecting from one side. This permits lcloser and tighter laying of the shingles, giving a smoother and better wear-resisting, as well as Waterproof construction, while atethe same time greatly expediting and simplifying the laying operation. In the said prior applica- 4applied to shingles without the a metallic fastener andshingle, particularly the composition type, and in the presentapplication I have claimedmy improved form of fastener.

being `on' one side of t e plate 10. These flanges consist in abottom flan e 15 and a. pair ofiside flanges 16, 16, the atter being `in position to engage the notches 7 and 8 respectively of the shingle shown in Figs. 1
and3. The lower flange 15 engages the truncated rtion 3, the remaining cut portions 2 andxl being adapted to abut against the adjoining shingles. This construction provides a firm, ri id, holding, aligning and interlocking roo? construction, with the Overlapping and abutting ends of adjacent shingles firmly united.

-notches 7 and 8 are entirely omitted, as I so form the side flanges 23 and 24 in this type of fastener 21 as to engage the straight adjacent edge portion of the shingles 20 independently of notches or special formation, thesey flanges 23 and 24 being positioned atl an angle and preferably at right angles to eachother and cooperating with,` thebottom flange 25 to interlock with the end, point or truncated section 3 of the shingle. T he recesses 26 :and 27 receive the fastening nails and hold the fastener, together vwith the ad'- jacent underneath 'shingle in rm position.
In both forms of my resent fastener the same caribe made of t inmetal, stamped Out-With the flanges land 16 in one form, or 23, 24 and 25 in the other form on the same side, and at a single stanpilig operation, and all flanges are positioned at one side of thebody portion, thus facilitating the holdin and interlocking action of fast-l ener and s ingles in a substantially flat position. In both forms of the invention also, the shingles are made without bends, and in one form substantially without cutting, notching or other treatment, while the laying of a roof with myimproved form of fastener is capable of' eat speed, by unskilled labor, and results 1n an extremely attracshingles as herein shown, is a distinct novel ty, and the advantageof this construction in speed, simplicitjr and the facility for having allshn/gles and fastener,lying,substan-A tiall-ypflat, is of great importance, andIf wish' to claim the same herein broadly. i
My invention is further described and defined inA the form of a claim asv follows:
A shingle fastener of the kind described,
.comprising a body portion, adaptedto underlie a plurality of shingles, flanges formed integral therewith and atI each side thereof, adapted to interlock with shingles arranged side by side and overlying the body portion,
a flange formed integral with said body pori tion at the lower end thereof and between the first said flanges and adapted to interlock with a shingle overlying the shingles arranged side by side, and means for perf mitting fastening of the fastener in position.
