With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a top plan view of a conventional form of railway crossing, showing the device applied thereto.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of railway and 2 a roadway crossing said railway at a right angle. Disposed adjacent opposite sides of the railway 1 are spaced ties 3, to the outer ties of which elongated shafts 4 are connected and rotatably mounted in bearings 5, whereby said shafts may rotate. Although ties are described for use as a base for the shafts, it is to be understood that any other suitable foundation may be used.

When the U-shaped members 13 are in raised position they form a barrier for preventing vehicles from crossing the track, however for night purposesJthe U- shaped members 13 are provided with lamps 14 which will be plainly visible to operators of vehicles approaching the crossing.
The ends 15 of the shafts 4 are rotatably mounted in posts 16, and are provided with levers 17, which levers when the shafts are automatically rotated by the train approaching the crossing moves upwardly and outwardly and vinto engagementwith the hooks 18 carried by the posts 16, thereby limiting the rotation of the shafts. Levers 17 also form means whereby the shafts may be manually operated if so desired, thereby allowing the barriers to be manually moved to operative or inoperative positions. The shafts 4 outside of the posts 16 are provided with downwardly extending arms 19, which' arms have pivotally connected thereto at 2O inwardly extending rods 21, which rods extend beneath the rails 11 and are pivotally connected at 21 to the arms 23 of a horizontally pvoted member 24, therefore it will be seen that when the parts are in the normal position shown in Figure 1 an angularly -pin 26 and 1move thepivoted member 24 vto normal position shown in Figure l, and -rock the shafts .land the U-shaped memcrossing. means 1s provided whereby barriers may be disposed member 25 carried by the last car of a train would pass the restoringpin 26 carried by one of the arms 23, however after "the shafts have been rotated ninety degrees in the mannerset forth above vthe pin 26 will be in a position ninety degreesfroml that shown in Figure 1, and consequently in the path of the angulafrly disposed member 25 carried by the last car of the train, therefore the member 25 will engage the bers 13 to horizontal4 position as shown in Figure 1.
