To all whom t may` concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY Varies, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, in the county of lVayne and Lcitate of Michigan, have inventeda new and useful Improvementin a` Paper Hanger, of .which the following is a specification. j

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a paper hanger and has for its object the provision of mechanical means for hanging paper so as to eliminate the necessity for the use of a platform or ladder during the hanging of the paper.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a paper hanger having means for holding the end of the paper until the same is placed in position against the surface to which it is to be attached and means for releasing the same at the will of the operator.

Another object of the invention is the provision in a paper hanger of means for automatically putting the paste on the paperl as it is used or shortly before it is used.

Another object of the invention is the-provision of a paper hanger having a presser roller and a paste affixer adjustable relatively to each other.

Another object of the invention is the provision in a paper hanger of a paste container and automatic means for feeding the paste from the container to a paste aflixer as the paste is used.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is adapted for use in hanging paper'on the walls and ceilings of rooms and for hanging posters and the like.

The invention in its preferred form cornprises a ll-shaped frame 7 to the central portion of which is attached a suitable handle. Mounted in holes formed in the legs of the SeriaI No. 627,775.

The tube 17 is in communication with a tank or paste container it) which is pro-vided with a Cover 20, which is threaded thereon, said cover being provided with a dome 21 in which one end of the tube connects and through which projects a stem 2st, the inner end of which is attached to a disk 22 which is positioned within the tank loosely, and rests upon one end of a spring 28, the other end of which engages the bottom of the tank. .an opening is formed in the cover and is provided `with a cap 25 which serves as a closure for the opening. The paste is deposited in the tank through the opening, the dislr being tirst pressed downwardly toward the bottom of the tank against the pressure of the spring. When the paste is deposited in the tank and the cap placed in position the pressure may then be released from the stem 2li and the spring will then have a tendency to move the disk upwardly of the tank thus forcing the paste through the tube 17 and through the

26 and 26 is a rod 30 upon which is mounted a `roller '31, which is preferably made of rubber, or some other suitable material for pressing the paper against the wall or other surface to which it is to be attached. Mounted on the

26 and 26 is a lug 32, provided with an abutment stop or shoulder 33. Projected through the lug and curled around the same is oneend 311 of a Wire holding member, Which is adapted to engage the shoulder 33 upon an attempt to turn the member 34 in the lug 32. The member 34 connects with the leg of a U-shaped member in which is formed the coil 35 to give a spring effect to the member, the bight 36 of the U-shaped member being adapted to normally engage the rubber roller 31.

When it is desired to use the device the paper is unvvound from the roll 10 and drawn over the member 12 and under the roller 31 and placed between the roller 31 and the bight 36. As the paper passes'over the portion 13 of the paste afxer 12 the necessary amount of paste adheres to the paper. `When the roller 31 is placed against the Wall at the proper position the bight 36 may be drawn free from the roller by means of a cord. or other suitable means, thus allowing the paper to engage at its end the wall or other surface to which it is to be affixed. The bight is then restored to its normal position and as the roller is drawn along the surface to be papered the paper is drawn from the roll and the proper amount of paste placed thereon and the same is then pressed firmly against the surface to be papered the paste causing it to adhere in position. Then the particular strip is finished the operator then cuts the strip from the roll by any suitable means, the point of severing being beyond the rubber roller, so that the device may then be used to cover another strip of the surface.

As the paper is drawn from the roll the marginal trimming is performed by suitable cutting members mounted on the legs in which the rod 9 is journaled. The bight of a U-shaped member 37 is mounted on each of the legs in which the rod 9 is journaled and rotatably mounted on the legs 38 and 39 are disks 40 and 41, which are provided with sharpened peripheries and spaced apart just sufficiently to allow the paper to be vdrawn between them so as to sever'the marginal edge of the paper from the main body thereof. If it is desired to Vsever only one marginal edge from the paper only one of the cutting sets Will be necessary.

By mounting the rubber roller on bars which are adapted for adjustment at their befurcated end the position of the roller 31 may be adjusted relatively to the roller 10, so that the most ellicient position may be used when papering the Walls` and when papering the ceiling. When the adjustment has been made the Wing nuts are tightened to retain the parts in the desired position.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of structure I do not Wish to limit myself to the precise form of structure shown but desire to avail myself of spring positioned` in said container and adapted for engaging, at one end, the inner surface of the base of said container; a disk mounted in said container and adapted for engaging at its under surface, the opposite end of said spring; a cover for said container; a stem mounted on said disk and projecting outwardly from said cover, said container being adapted for containing pastebetween said disk and said cover; a tube connected to said cover and communieating with the interior of said container; a frame, a paste distributor mounted in said frame and communicating With said tube; a presser roller mounted on said frame; and a paper roller mounted on said frame.

2. A. paper hanging machine comprising a paste container; a frame; a paste distributor mounted on said frame; means for delivering paste from said container to said distributor; a roller mounted on said frame for supporting a roll of paper; a presser roller mounted on said frame, said paste distributor being intermediate said rollers; and a U-shaped clamping member mounted on said frame, adjacent said ,presser roller and adapted for engaging, at its bight, said presser roller, for retaining a strip of paper in fixed relation to said presser roller.

A paper hanging machine comprising a paste container; a frame; a paste distributor mounted on said frame; means for delivering paste from said container to said distributor; a roller mounted on said frame for supporting a roll of paper; a presser roller mounted on said frame, said paste distributor being intermediate said rollers; and a U-shaped clamping member mounted on said frame, adjacent said presser roller and adapted for engaging, at its bight, said presser roller, for retaining a strip of paper in fixed relation to said presser roller; and resilient means for normally retaining said bight in engaging position with said roller.
