DOMESTIC FIRE GRATE.
Application filed .Tune 3, 1925. Seria No. 34,705.
T0 all whom it may concer/a.'
Be it known that I, REGINALD J oHN PAGE, a. citizen ofthe UnitedStates of America, residing at Auckland, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to-Domestic Fire Grates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fire grates for room warming purposes, and has for its object'the provision of improvements which relate to fire grates of the type capable of being rotated about their vertical axes within chimneys to cause them to face towards or into either one of a pair of adjoining rooms at opposite sides 4of a chimney, the latter having a single flue and a lower portion containing a cross passage extending completely through it from roomV to room, openings being provided through the walling of the respective rooms at each end of said. cross passage. j j x The main improvement provided by the invention, consists in the provisio-n of shutters, and framesoperable vertically in guides at neach end of the chamney cross passage in order that the latter may be ycompletely Closed at both ends, or be completely closed at the end in or towards which the back yof the grate is located, or faces, while a frame at the other end of the cross passage may be utilized to fill up the lspace not occupied by the grate. front.
@ther improvements yconsist in the construction and mounting of the grate, and'in the provision of means for rotating same.
The lire grate is mounted on a platform supported on a ball pivot held in a socket situated below the centre of the line in the upper portion of. the chimney.
The fire gra-te. is provided with ashort tubular uptake flue which is entered in and is capable of being rotated within the lower end of the chimney flue. Y i
The platform on which the fire grate is mounted is capable of beinpr turned through a horizontal plane in order to cause the front of the tire grate to face towards or into either of the adjoining rooms as required.
`The means for Acausing the lire grate to be turned to face into either of the adjoining gears and shafts Figure l is a cross sectional elevation of j the improved fire walling, and j Figure is a sectional elevation of same viewed from one side, and with the walling ofthe `room at that side removed,
Figure 3 is a sectional plan view of the tire grate and parts shown in Figure l.
Figure 4 is a similar view to Figure l but showing the grate half turned and all the shutters and frames raised, Y
Figure 5 is a sectional plan view of the parts as shown in Figure 4. y The brick work l of a singleflue chimney is located in the wall space between a pairof adjoining rooms, the lower portion of the chimney being formed to provide a cross passage 2, extending completely through it from one of said rooms to the other'room,
grate and a chimney and openings in the wallings of said rooms being j provided at the ends of the cross passage 2, and being surrounded by the usual'mantels 3. i
j A'fire grate 4 is mounted on a platform 5, the latter being centrally supported on a ball pivot 6 held in a socket 7 in the Hoor I at the bottom of the chimney.`
"T he `tire grate 4 is provided vwith a tubular uptake Hue 7 which is entered in and capable of rotation within the lower end of the flue 8 of the chimney. The uptake flue 7a of the fire grate 4 is positioned directly above the ball pivot 6 on which. the platform 5` is supported, thereby providing that the platform 5 together with the lire grate 4 on it may be rotated about a vertical axis and j through a horizontal plane as required, in order to cause the open or front face of the tire grate 4 to face into or towards either one of the adjoining rooms.
-Ball castors 9 or the like can be provided on the underside of the platform 5 and are adapted to run on the floor surface beneath the said platform, in order to ensure that the latter and the tire grate 4 thereon kcan be easily-rotated on the ball pivot 6.
The shutters are slidable vertically in guides 11 in the frames 12 and are capable of being drawn down one at a time and with a frame 12 to completely close the space in a wall surrounded by a mantle 3 so as to screen off or obscure from view the back of the re grate 4 in that room towards which said back is foi` the time being facing, or both of said shutters 10 and both frames 12 can be drawn down to close the spaces within both mantels, so as to hide the grate 4 from view from both rooms when the grate is not in use.
A frame 12 when drawn down at the vfront of the grate 4 prevents draught through the cross passage 2 to the flue 8 in the chimney and diverts all draught through the grate 4, as well as making the front or open face of the fire grate appear neat and tidy when viewed from the room towards which it is facing, and upon the shutter 10 at that side being raised.
In Figures 1 and 3 of the accompanying drawing, the lire grate 4 is shown with its open or front face presented to one ofthe pair of adjoining rooms. In this position the shutter 10 at the back of the fire grate 4 is drawn down and the frame 12 at the same side is also drawn down, the combined shutter and frame completely closing the space within the mantel 3 to screen the back of the fire grate from view.
The shutter 10 at the front or open face of the fire grate 4 is raised to its uppermost position, thereby exposing the open face of the said fire grate to View in the room towards which said grate is facing, the frame V12 at that side however being drawn down to close the spaces at the sides and top of the fire grate between the latter and the edges of the mantel 3.
The shutters 10 and frames 12 at both sides of the chimney are preferably counterbalanced by means of cords 13, pulleys 14 and weights 15 in the well known manner employed in hanging sliding window sashes.
When it is desired to rotate the fire grate 4 on its pivot 6 to cause its Vopen or front face to be presented to the opposite room to that which it has previously been facing, the shutters 10 and frames 12 at both sides of the chimney are raised so as to render the passage or space 2 through the chimney unobstructed at its ends.
The platform 5 and the fire grate 4 thereonr are then rotated on the pivot 6 until the front of the tire grate 4 is presented to the desired roem, the shutter 10 and frame 12 at the back of the grate, and the frame 12 at the front of the grate being then drawn down.
By reason of the fact that the size of the apertures at the ends of the cross passage 2 are restricted by the said frames 12 and shutter 10, insufficient room is provided for the platform 5 to be rotated on its pivot 6 so long as the shutter 10 and frames 12 are down, and the fire grate 4 is thereby held facing the desired room.
If desired, mechanical means can be provided for rotating the platform 5 and fire grate 4 on the ball pivot 6, such means preferably comprising a bevel gear 16 secured around the uptake flue-7a of the lire grate 4, a further bevel gear 17 meshing with the bevel gear 16 and secured on one end of a short shaft 18, a bevel gear 19 0n the other end of the shaft 18 meshing with a bevel gear 20 keyed centrally on a shaft 21 adapted to extend through the cross passage 2, so that its ends are accessible, from the adjoining rooms, said ends being suitably squared or otherwise formed to take a handle or crank whereby said shaft 21 can be rotated when required to cause the fire grate 4 to be rotated. v
In a modification the shutters 10 instead of working in guides 11 in the frames 12 may be extended to work in the same guides 12a as the frames 12 and in front of the latter, in which case said frames 12, will only be used for closing spaces at the top and sides of the open face of the fire grate 4.
What I do claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent of the United States of America is i y A 1. A fire grate of the kind described revolvable about a vertical aXis in a cross passage in chimneys soas to be capable of being made to face into either of two rooms; shutters and frames operable vertically in guides at each end of said passage to completely close one end of said passage and partly close the other end thereof, or to completely close both ends of said passage, substantially as described and illustrated.
2. Afire grate according to claim 1, wherei in said frames operate in vertical guides in walling, and said shutters in guides 'in the frames, substantially as described and illustrated.
3. A fire grate, according toclaim 1, wherein said frames and shutters are counterbalanced and are each operable independently of the others, substantially as described and illustrated.
4. A fire grate according to claim 1 wherein said frames and shutters are counterbalanced and are each operable independently of the others, said shutters operating in the same guides as, and on the outside of, said frames, substantially as describedand illustrated.
5. A lire grate according to claim 1,Where in said grate is revolvable on a central ball pivot and has an uptake flue which is entered in the flue of the chimney, substan- 5 tally as described and illustrated.
6. A fire grate, according to claiin 1,Wl1erein said grate is mounted on a platform 1'e- Volvable on a central ball pivot and rollers, said grate having an uptake flue which is entered in the lue of the chimney, substan- 10 tially as described and illustrated.
In `testimony whereof, I have signed my naine to this specicaton.
