PROCESS OF. IMKING HOLLOW ARTICLES.

Be it known that l, JOSEPH N. ROYAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Budalo, in the county of Erieand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Processes of Making Hollow Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a hollow article and to process of making the same.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved process of manufacturing hollow articles particularly such as are intended for ornamental containers and to provide an intermediate article or blank which may be used in such construction to advantage.
This invention relates more particularly to the formation of containers for confecbe of an ornamental nature but which are composed of a plurality of telescopingparts to .permitthe opening and closing of the container. l
A convenient and efficientmanner of constructing hollow articles comprises the formation of a coating of a material upon the interior of the mold as for example, by the blown pulp process. In accordance with this invention it is possible to make such articles from a single mold at one molding operation.
The invention accordingly comprises the several steps and the relation and order of one or more of such steps with respect to each of the others, and the article possessing the features,properties, and the relation of elements, which are exemplified in the following detailed disclosure, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which: I

In accordance with the pres nt invention, an intermediate article is first produced composed of two elements in superposed relation, each corresponding to one of the telescoping parts, and these superposed elements areattached together by a surface connecting the male portion of th one element with the female portion of the other in such a manner that when the parts have been cut apart and the connecting surface removed, the telescoping elemenets are of the proper size and condition to fit together.
in this manner, when molding processes are used which construct complete closures at each operation, each of the separate elements may be used as the closure for the open side of the other.
The invention is illustrated in connection with the accompanying figures, in which it is desired to produce the article shown in Fig. 2, comprising. a base element inserted within the opening 4.
In a construction of such an article in accordance with this invention, there is first formed an intermediate article such as that illustrated in Fig. 1 composed of two elements, a lower element 1, having a top 4* which is to become the opening 4, and an upper element 2? having a sleeve 3". These parts are similar in every respect to the corresponding parts of the completed object, save only that the lower portion of the sleeve 3 is connected to and thereby made integral with the upper portion 4 of the element 1, by a connecting wall 5.
By reason of the fact that the outer diameter of the sleeve 3 is intended to be substantially the same as the inner diameter of the opening 4, this connecting wall 5 will ordinarily slant outwardly by an amount equal to the thickness of the material of which the container is made, and as the parts will ordinarily be severed by a saw, this connecting wall will ordinarily have a height equal to the thickness of the saw. When so constructed, the parts may be severed and the finished article completed from the intermediate article by a single saw cut, severing the parts. In general, it is preferred, however, to round oflr or flatten the interior of the opening 4 to provide a cylindrical surface to receive the sleeve, as
shown at 6. Thus, by the above construction, it is possible to make the compound finished article by a single molding and a single cutting operation.
Since certain changes in carrying out th above process, and certain modifications in the article which embody the invention may be made without departing from" its scope, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be inter preted as illustrative and not in a limited sense.
It is also to be understood that the follow ing claims are intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall tlierebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The process of forming ahollow article composed of two telescoping parts, which comprises forming a single integral article having portions corresponding to the said parts, the inner diameter of the one corresponding to the outer diameter of the other, said portions being s aced from each other and united by a wall extending from the one to the other and thereafter removing said uniting wall.
2. The process of forming a hollow article of blown pulp, composed of two elements having telescoping parts, which comprises forming a single integral article of blown pulp having portions corresponding to the said elements spaced from each other united by a wall joining the parts'intended to tele-.
scope and thereafter removing said joining wall.
3. An article of the character described,
comprising two arts having mating portions, the outer iameter of the one being substantially equal to the inner diameter of the other, said parts being connected by a conical wall of a height substantially equal to the thickness of a saw blade.
' 4. The process of forming a hollow article (omposed of two detachably, open sided parts which comprises first constructing a substantially closed container having portions corresponding to the said parts, united by a wall connecting the said open sides to form a single closure and subsequently removin said wall.
5. T e process of forming a hollow article composed of two detachably open sided parts by a molding rocess which forms a closed hollow container which comprises forming a single hollow container having portions corresponding to each of said parts, joined intimately together by a connectin wall, and subsequently removing the said connecting wall.
6. An article of the character described comprising'two open sided portions, said portions being connected by a wall joining the peripheral edges to form a substantially closed hollow article having two portions adapted specifically to form th portions of a separable container and said connecting wall being adapted for complete removal to separate said parts.
