PUMPING APPARATUS.'
Application filed November 26, 1923.
T all whom t muy concer/n.:
Be it known that l, Ramen L. Lim, a citi zen ot theUnitedStates of America, residing at Dayton, county ot Montgomery, and
State ci Ohio, have inventedI certain new and useful lmproveinents in Pumping Apparatus, of which the :tollowing` is al full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention relates to controlling' dek vices for use in pumping systems, andmore particularly to devices which are responsive to pressure in the system tor automatically starting' and stopping a power driven pump or pressure creating device,
lt is among the objects ot the invention to provide a controlling device which will be simple and reliable and tend toward a reduction in the number of parts.
ln the disclosed form of the invention, a motor driven pump is connected with a pressure storage tank, anda pressure responsive switch is yconnected with said tank. lncrease ot' pressure in the system conditions the switch so that it can be operated by means actuated by the pump driving mechanism in order to stop the pump automatically. Decrease oit pressure causes a spring to be re leased to close the switch in order that the pump can be started automatically.
Further objects and advantages: ot the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein preferred embodiments oit' one form of the presentinvention are clearly shown.
In the drawings:
Fig. l is a diagrammatic View ot a pumping system including the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View ot the controlling device.
Fig. Bis a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig 2.
Referring to the drawings, and more particu-larly to Fig'. l, a pump 20 is provided with an inlet pipe 2l. and an outlet pipe 22 leadingfto a pressure storage tank 100. Tank 100 is connected with suitable supply pipes by outlet 101. A gear housing 30 supports an electric motor 40, having a motor shaft 4l journalled in va bearing 42 within said housing. worm 43, carried by shaft 4l, cooperates with a worm gear 44 within housing 30; Gear44 carries an eccentric 45 provided. with an eccentric strap 46. which tounctions as a connecting rod between the 3l, and is provided with an' opening 33'y which isy in alinement with opening 3l. Hate 32 supports the controlling device represented as a whole by the numeral 50, ay casing 5l therefor being secured to plate 32 by bolts 52.
The controlling' device 5() includes a switch 54 and a pressure operated diaphragm 55 which is connected with tank 100 by pipe 102". A` rotatable and longitudinally movable shaft 56 having a head 56a is-actuated in one direction by diaphragm 55,`against the action oi a spring Shaft 56fis pro'- vided with a= reduced portion 57 which is slidable through an aperture in an upwardly extending lugl carried by plate 32.
Switch 54 includes, an upwardly extending y adapted vfor sliding` engagement with con-V tact 6l, is secured adjacent the end of strip 67 by screws 70. Contact 69'` is maintained in engagement with lcontact 6l, as shown in Fig; 3, vlby a coil springl, one end ofwhich is attached to pin r'Y' 2carried by arm 65, the other end beingconnected with insulating` pin 'carried by arm 59-- Conductor 111, which is connected with arm by a terminal clip 7 4 and screw 75, leads to a source of current such as a battery, 112. Battery112 is connected with the other terminal of motor 40 by `wire 113.-
The means actuated by the pump driving mechanism fforoperating the switch 54 coinprisesea `cam 80 which isV received by, liattedf portion-81 of shaftlll and is lheldfbetween the end of worm 43 andibearing42 by a spacing sleeve 82. The lower end of arm extends through openings 33 and 31 into the gear housing 30, and carries an insulating pin 83 which is adapted to be moved into the path of cam 80, whereupon the arm 65 will be rotated in a counter-clockwise direction upon engagement of cam 8() therewith.
Means are provided for holding contact 69 out of engagement with contact 61. This means includes a supporting arm 99, carried by plate 32, which pivotally supports at 91 an arm 92 provided with a hooked end 93.. A coil spring 9&1, having clips 95 secured to Yits opposite ends which engage pins 96 and 9T carried by arm 90 and arm 92 respectively, normally resiliently maintains arm 92 in engagement with stop pin 98 carried by arm 96. An insulating pin 99 is carried by arm 65 adjacent its upper end and is adapted `to be moved into alinement with arm 92 and to be engaged by the hooked end 93 thereof when arm 65 is rotated by cam 80, thereby holding Contact 69 out of engagement with contact 61.
Mode of operatz'oa.
Assume that the pressure in tank 100 has reached its predetermined low value. The parts of the controlling device will be in the position shown in the figures of the drawings, with the contacts 61 and 69 closed. The circuit will be as follows: from battery 112, through wire 113, motor 40, wire 110, arm 59, contact 61, contact 69, strip 67, arm 65 and conductor 111 back to the battery 112. The motor 40 operates worm 4-3 to drive worm gear 44., which through eccentric L15 and eccentric strap46 causes cross head 4-6 to be reciprocated in cross head guide 47. This reciprocatory movement of cross head L16 is transmitted to pump piston 23 through pump rod 25, causing the pump 2O to take fluid in through pipe 21 and force the fluid into the tank 100 through outlet 22. As the tank 100 becomes filled with fluid and the air pressure therein increases to a predetermined high value, diaphragm 55 responds thereto and moves shaft 56 endwise to the right, as viewed in Fig. 2. is shaft 56 is moved in this direction, arm 65 is also moved along with it, moving pin 83 into the path of travel of cam 30 and the pin 99 into alinement with the hooked end of arm 92. Contact 69 slides along contact 61 and maintains the motor circuit. The switch is now conditioned by the diaphragm so as to be caused to open by means of the pump operating mechanism. When cam 8O strikes pin 83, the arm 65 will be rotated in a counterclockwise direction, separating Contact 69 from contact 61, breaking the motor circuit and causing pin 99 to engage under the hook 93. Spring 94; will cause the hooked end 93 to hold arm 65 in such position that contacts 61 and 69 will will be maintained in open position. As the pressure in tank 100 decreases, due to a demand on the system, the pressure on the diaphragm valve 55 will be relieved `so that spring 55il will move shaft 56 and arm 65 to the left, as viewed in 2; and when the predetermined low pressure is reached, pin 99 will have been moved out of alineinent with the arm 92 and released from the hook end 93 thereof. Pin 83 is then out of alinement with cani 30. Spring 71 will then bring contact 69 into engagement with stationary contact 61 to complete the motor circuit,` whereupon the motor will be started to cause the pump 2O to charge the tank 100 and restore pressure therein.
TWhile the form of `embodiment of the invention as herein disclosed, constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
