PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. HUNT, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO GENERAL MOTORS RESEARCH COR- PORATIO'N, OF DAYTON, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
GENERATOR BRUSH.
I Application filed October 8, 1923. Serial No. 666,261.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. HUNT, cit-izen of the United States of America, residin at Dayton, county of Montgomery, and tate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Generator Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in brushes for electrical machines.
It is among the objects of the present invention to form a composition brush having integral therewith a bracket adapted to be attached to an electric machine in any suitable manner.
Another object of the present invention is a brush of which the eater portion may be utilized without en angering the commutator by engagement with the bracket portion of the brush.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein a preferred form of the invention is clearly shown.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the brush.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the brush.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the bracket portion of the brush.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of 'a modified form of brush construction.
Fig. 5 is a front view of this same modified form a portion being shown in section.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 20 designates the L-section, metal bracket including legs or sides 21 and 22, arranged at right-angles to each other. In the side 21 there are provided two holes 23 fo receiving screws or studs for securing the bracket to any suitable brush 'arm. On the side 22 of the bracket there are provided angular tongues which, as is shown on the drawing, are punched out cf the side 22 itself and bent at right angles thereto. .These tongues 24 may also be secured to the side 22 in any suitable manner and not formed integral therewith as shown on the drawing. 25. designates the brush body made up of any suitable conducting material. As shown in the Figs. 1 and 2, the brush engages with one surface of the side 22 of the bracket 20 and has the tongues 24 projecting into the body thereof.
In making this brush the bracket 20 may be inserted in any suitable die and the brush composition dumped into the die and compressed. The die is so shaped that when finished the four sides of the brush will align with the four edges of the side 22 of the bracket. The tongues 24 being imbedded in the brush material will tend to hold this portion securely in position on the bracket.
Referrin to the modified form of construction s own in Fig. 4 and Fig. 5, the bracket 20 has angularly arranged sides 21 and 22. Holes 23 are provided in the side 21 for attaching the bracket to an electric machine. The side 22 is provided with tapered holes 26, the smaller diameter of the holes being on the outer surface of the side 22. In making up this brush the bracket is inserted in a suitable die and the brush composition dumped into the die and compressed. In this compressing operation part of the brush composition Wlll be squeezed up into thetapered holes 26 and thus form interlocking means with the side 22 of the bracket to hold the two parts securely together to form an integral whole.
By the use of some compositions in constructing the brush itmight be necessary to heat treat the brush assembly after the brush material has been pressed into shape and ositioned on the bracket.
W ile the form of embodiment of the invention as disclosed, constitutes a preferred form, it is to be understood that other forms might be adopted, all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
What I claim is as follows:
1. The method of making a composition brush which comprises forming a bracket having two sides angularly arranged; forming tongues projecting from one of the sides and a plurality of holes in the other side; and pressing a mass of conducting material onto the side of the bracket including the tongues whereby said mass will have the ing an integral whole.
tongues embedded in its body portion form- 2. The method of making a composition brush which comprises formir'r a bracket having two sides arranged at right angles; forming tongues on one of the sides and angular] arranged therewith and a plurahty 0 holes in the other side; pressing a mass of conduct-in material onto the side of the bracket inclu in the tongues whereby said mass will have t e tongues embedded in its body portion; and heat treating the assembly.
3. The method of making a com sition brush which comprises forming a racket having two legs angularly arranged; pro- 10 viding one of the legs with means for anchoring thereto a mass of molded brush material; and in securing b a molding operation a quantity of brine material to the leg. having the anchoring means.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature.
JOHN H. HUNT.
