'ORA A. COLBY, OF IRWIN, AND CHRISTIAN AAIABORG, OFIPITTSBURGH, PENNSYL- VANIA, ASSIGNORS TO WESTINGHOKUSE ELECTRIC L MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
MASTER-TRAY BUTTON.
Appli-cation l.tiled MayB, 11923. Serial No. {637,751.
To all who/m, it may concern lBe it known thatwe, @RA A. Conni-r, fa citizen ot .the United States, 4and a resident of Irwin, in the county oi' estmoreland and State ot Pennsylvania, and CHRIST-IAN AALBoRG, a citizen of the United' States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, lin the county of Allegheny -an'd State of Pennsylvania, have invented -a1 new and usetul EImprovement in Toaster-Tray Buttons, of which the `follow- ?ing is a specification.
Our invention relates to electric `table toasters and particularly to means for actuating the trays ot such toast-ers.
The objectot `our"invention'is to provide a relatively simple, inexpensive and easily `maiiuft'actured tray button and tray-actuating means.
In practicing our invention, we provide a toaster having sheet metal side ymembers and a'tray pivotally supported thereby. A memberof substantially EU-shape, has one of its ends secured to 'theside 'of =t`lie tray at its pivot and has an Ioperating 4button secured to the other 1end tthereof. The inter- `mediate part of the member of lU-stha-pe is located outside: of the yiframe and -co-opeiates therewith teli-mit the turning movement-ot thetray in its downward direction.
In the single -sheet of drawings,"
Figure 1 is -a view, in `side elevation, ot va portion of an electric table toaster comprising they vdevice embodying our inve'n tion,
Fig. 2 is a View, in `en'd elevation, of a portion ot a toaster comprising the device lembodying our invention,
Fig. 3 is a view, in side elevation, ot a `member of U-shape `comprising a part ot the device embodying `our invention,
Fig. t is a View, in end elevation, oflthe member illustrated in Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a view in end elevation of a tra y button.
An electric toaster 11 comprises a suitable base 12 of relatively thin sheet metal having a plurality of heat insulating supporting members 13 suitably secured between the end portionsof integral depending flanges 14. A pair of spaced, vertically-extending, sheet metal side members 15 are secured to the top portion of the base 12 and support a plurality of trays 16 therebetween. The
trays '16 fare pivotally mounted in integral lateral extensions 17 ofthe respective side frames 15.
A heating element for the toast-er com- Y prises a pai-r of vertically-,extending sheets l18 of asuitvble electric insulating material,`
such as mioa,\locatedon the top ofthe base Z12 and held thereon lby any suitable means l `and supporti-ng a resistor wire (not shown).
As this application lisclosely `related-to -a companion application, Serial No. 630,271, tiled on April 18, 1923, "by A. Colby and assigned to the i/Vestinlghouse Elect-ric & Manufacturing Company it is bellievedthat further description of parts other ythan those relating directly to our invention is unnecessary, and reference may be` `had to the `hereinbetore Ymentio-ned appli-cation `for the other detailso't tJh-e device.
A `member 19, otsubstantially "U-s'hape, is
y:provided with extended integral end portions21 and 22, the end yportion 21 having rounded ends and'theend por-tion'22 being ot substantially triangular torni, asmay be :noted more particularly lby reference to Fig. 410i? thedrawing.
The rounded end 22 ofthe member 19 is `:provided with a `plurality of spaced openings, fthe outer ones y otw'hichhave rivet mehr bers 23 extenoino' .therethrough to :secure the flock therewith. Arsecuring means, snch as Aa rivet member 126, is employedito seeurethe button 2.5 on the f yend 22.
The tray 1.6 has two limiting positions relatively to the side frames 15, namely a substantially vertical one at which time a slice of bread placed therein is located closely adjacent to the heating element hereinbefore 'described to effect a toasting thereof, and a suitable horizontalposition.
When the toasting ot one side of a slice of bread has been completed, the operator grasps the knob 25 and effects a turning movement thereof and of the tray 16 in an outwardly and downwardly direction and the downward movement of the tray is continued until the intermediate portion of the member 19 strikes the lower surface of the extensions 17 of the side frames 15, substantially as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, whereby a stop is provided against further downward movement of the trays. As two knobs are provided, the operator may effect the reciprocal turning movements from either side of the device.
The device embodying our invention comprises relatively few parts that are easily manufactured and assembled and that operate in a positive manner to effect the desired results. t
Various modifications and changes in detail may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention and such modifications are intended to be covered by the appended claims.
IVe claim as our invention:
1. In a vertical toaster, inA combination, a frame comprising stationary side members having relatively narrow, integral, projecting portions, a materiai-supporting member supported by said projecting portions and having a turning movement relatively thereto, and a member of substantially U-shape secured to said material-supporting member for turning the same.
2. In a vertical toaster, in combination, a frame comprising stationary side members having relatively narrow, integral, projecting portions, a material-supporting member supported by said projecting portions and having a turning movement relatively thereto, and a member of substantially U- shape secured to said material-supporting member for turning the same, and forlimiting the turning movementin one direction.
3. In a vertical toaster, in combination, a frame comprising stationary side members having relatively narrow, integral, lprojecting portions, a material-supporting member supported by said projecting portions and having a turning movement relatively thereto, a member of substantially U-shape having one end portion secured to said material supporting member, and a metal cap member secured to and interlocked with the'other end portion of said member of 'U-shape, the intermediate portion of said member of U- shape being located outside of said projecting portion whereby a turning movement of the material-supporting member may be effected by said metal cap member.
4. In a vertical toaster, in combination, a frame comprising stationary side members having relatively narrow, integral, projecting portions, a material-supporting member supported bysaid projecting portions and having a turning movement relatively thereto, a member of substantially U-shape having one end portion secured to said material supporting member, and a metal cap member secured to and interlocked with the other end portion of said member of U- shape, the intermediate portion of said member of U-shape being located outside of said projecting portion and co-operating with said side member to limit the turning movement of said material-supporting member in one direction. f
5. In a vertical toaster, in combination, a frame comprising a stationary sheet metal side member having a relativelyvnarrow, integral portion projecting laterallyof said .member in lthe plane thereof, a materialcarrying tray pivotally supported by the projecting portionof said side member, a
thin metal member of substantially U-shape having one end secured to 'said tray, the other endk being of substantially hexagonal contour, andl an operating button, having an inner depression adapted to receive said end of substantially hexagonal contour, for actuating said tray.
6. In a vertical toaster, in combination, a frame comprising a stationary, sheet metal side member havmgaJ relatively narrow, in-
tegral portion projecting laterally of said member in the plane thereof, a materialcarrying tray pivotally supported by the projecting portion of said side member, a thin metal member of substantially U-shape having yone end secured to said trav, the other end being of substantially hexagonal contour, and an operating button, having an inner depression adapted to receive said end of. substantially hexagonal contour, for actuating said tray, the' intermediate portion of said member of U-shape lco-operating with said side member to limit the turning movement of'said tray in one direction.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto subscribed our names this 7th day of May,
`omi A. cofLBYf f CHRISTIAN Armeens.
